THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT Lyrics - The Jam

Review The Song (4)

A police car and a screaming siren
Pneumatic drill and ripped up concrete
A baby wailing, a stray dog howling
The screech of brakes and lamplights blinking

That’s entertainment, that’s entertainment

A smash of glass and the rumble of boots
An electric train and a ripped up phone booth
Paint splattered walls and the cry of a tom cat
Lights going out and a kick in the balls

I say that’s entertainment, that’s entertainment

Days of speed and slow time Mondays
Pissing down with rain on a boring Wednesday
Watching the news and not eating your tea
A freezing cold flat and damp on the walls

I say that’s entertainment, that’s entertainment

Waking up at 6 a.m. on a cool warm morning
Opening the windows and breathing in petrol
An amateur band rehearse in a nearby yard
Watching the telly and thinking 'bout your holidays

That’s entertainment, that’s entertainment

Waking up from bad dreams and smoking cigarettes
Cuddling a warm girl and smelling stale perfume
A hot summers day and sticky black tarmac
Feeding ducks in the park and wishing you were far away

That’s entertainment, that’s entertainment

Two lovers kissing amongst the scream of midnight
Two lovers missing the tranquillity of solitude
Getting a cab and travelling on buses
Reading the graffiti about slashed seat affairs

I say that’s entertainment, that’s entertainment

That's Entertainment ... THAT'S POETRY!!! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/8/12

This song is pure genius (the poetry ... sorry, the lyrics ... paint as vivid a picture as any work by Keats or Wordsworth) and to those reveling in their snobbery; thinking that rock 'n roll is a loud "voiceless" bit of non-art, I can only say ...
That's Entertainment.

Hard life | Reviewer: Heaven | 3/25/12

these lyrics to me say it all about parts of the north (which I call the outback or the northern territiories, being vast and outlying. If you live here for any length of time you will get sucked in, UNLESS you see all this as entertainment, because this is no way to live but the fact is that it is a way of life! - when I hear another story I just say 'That's Entertainment' and wonder at it all ... bang on anthem Paul - you are a master voyeur/composer

Fabulous | Reviewer: The Jammer | 5/19/11

Written by a true Jam fan who wrote a poem and sent it to Paul Weller, Weller then rearranged it. And to the guy above, couldn't agree more, I'm 17 and my Dad did the same thing, I can't get enough of them.

a great Jam song | Reviewer: CS | 5/20/09

tells a story with a great quiet rocking presence. Loved this song as a lad when I discovered the Jam in 80-81. Have introduced my 6 and 4 yr old to it and it puts a smile on my face to see another generation enjoying the song stylings of Mr. Weller.
