Billy Joel Summer, Highland Falls Lyrics

Last updated: 02/06/2013 06:51:45 AM

They say that these are not the best of times,
But they're the only times I've ever known,
And I believe there is a time for meditation in cathedrals of our own.
Now I have seen that sad surrender in my lover's eyes,
And I can only stand apart and sympathize.

For we are always what our situations hand us...
It's either sadness or euphoria.
And so we argue and we compromise,
And realize that nothing's ever changed,
For all our mutual experience, our seperate conclusions are the same.

Now we are forced to recognize our inhumanity,
Our reason co-exists with our insanity.
And though we choose between reality and madness...
It's either sadness or euphoria.

How thoughtlessly we dissipate our energies
Perhaps we don't fulfill each other's fantasies.
And as we stand upon the ledges of our lives,
With our respective similarities...
It's either sadness or euphoria.

He's the man... | Reviewer: Jack G | 9/10/12

I listened to Billy Joel religiously in high school in Long Island the 70' 1977 I wandered into a hotel bar in milwaukee and there he was having a drink at the bar, we chatted. His music, and lyrics are splendid, and he is a patriot too.

Billy Joel is an absolute Beast. Pure genius. Summer Highland Falls pretty much summarises the greatness of his work for me. Nifty but neat piano work, amazingly deep lyrics sung to perfection and sharp professional production. This man is an absolute genius.

Billy Joel is a genius | Reviewer: Clayton | 7/3/12

I have listened to every song Billy Joel has written. And I consider him a genius. His songs and the way he masters the piano insired me to buy one and teach it to myself. I have asked my family if ever I become in a coma or bad sick it is Billy Joel I want playing. He has so many songs that speak about the heart and the human condition. Listen to "Light as the breeze", "Unto the night","My other life is just a half a mile away" I have too many favorites to list which would eventually list them all but I truly love them all and marvel at the genius of this man and his music. I even have the classical music he wrote for Jon Woo to play on the classical piano. Pure Genius

As a performer of thousands of songs, this one is near and dear to my heart. It took me a long time to find it because the title "isn't it's either sadness of euphoria". Those words say it all and the melody has stayed with me from the first time I heard, a billion years ago. When I am asked why I'm not singing my own songs, I often say, There are some songs I could never have written any better and being able to sing a song like this one is Euphoric.

pure poetry | Reviewer: poots | 4/1/12

Well I am one of the lucky ones; Not only have I seen Billy Joel in concert three times, not only have I seen him in concert in 1976 when this song came out, but I am enjoying a renaissance of all of his music, it's like living it twice. This particular song is one that I actually missed the first time round, so lucky me, I get to enjoy it now. Sheer poetry; modern day genius.

Best Song Ever? Yes. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/7/11

I would like nothing more than to see this man in concert. He's done so much for me, and I can distinctly remember my dad playing this for me one night of my freshman year. Thank you for what you do Billy, I hope you realize how truly amazing the world thinks you are. Happy Early Birthday as well. <3

One of the best Billy Joel songs ever | Reviewer: John F | 3/4/10

How can one not be positively addicted listening to this song? It speaks of love that one can only touch for a brief moment and cannot possess. It tells us to savor every moment of love we experience and become totally and fearlessly lost in its depth without need or condition. It gives us the fullness to carry on and live our lives to the max....thank you've lived enough pain for all of are truly one of the greats of our time

I know what most of the people who read these reviews are thinking, "Oh here's some loser who only goes on the internet to watch reruns of star trek, i bet this is lame but i'll read it anyway and critisize this song just to piss them off." Before you read this let me tell you that Billy joel is the worlds best pianist and singer. If he were to go i don't know what the hell i would do with my life becaue he has shown me courage when others had forsaken me, hope in a tight corner and faith that i can make it no matter how hard the situation.

This song is the single most beautiful thing i have ever heard and ever will hear. Most people at my school just pass me off as that lame girl in grade 7 who does nothing but listen to crappy 80's songs but i say that they can all go to hell. I wish words existed to say how beautiful this song is but sadly they don't. This song brought tears to my eyes the first time i heard it and from that moment i knew that i wanted to become a great singer just like the piano man. For all those out there how havn't heard this ong please do so as soon as posible because i promise u that u will not be disapointed.

Turnstiles is only 8 songs | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/4/09

alright, d-train was saying how great this album is and how billy joel locked himself in a room and shit. its only 8 tracks. what the hell is that? thats ridiculous to sell an album with 8 measly songs. yes, these lyrics are incredible, but the album is really short.

The beat goes on | Reviewer: mom of three | 2/12/09

I just looked up all the lyrics to the amazing Billy Joel song because I was having a heart-to-heart with my baby, now almost 19 years old, as he struggles to understand the times he lives in and his place in the world. I was able to quote them almost verbatim, but decided I had to get them perfectly. I have printed them out and slipped them under his door with my suggestion for him to listen to the entire song. But just reading those brilliant lyrics may set new thoughts in motion.

gloomy day... beautiful words... | Reviewer: kim cook | 1/7/09

As today I sit and feel sad and tearful for the things that have come into my life all of a sudden... i just heard this song... I have never really listened until now... and what a mark it has left on my soul... thank you Billy

'Turnstiles' is one of the most underated albums in my opinion. Songs like this one, and 'James', are hardly known or heard in any music circles, and should be. Billy Joel doesn't write bad songs - if you read his biography, it describes the pain that he would go through to write them, locking himself in a room until a piece was completed. The results are plain to see.
This one is amazing - what lyrics!! Pure poetry, brilliant. And the music to go with it is brilliant, with his complicated, but easy to understand and appreciate, chord progressions. What a man, what a song.

A song for our times | Reviewer: Erik | 10/28/08

I have always loved this song, from the intricate classical piano intro to the introspective lyrics speaking of estranged lovers unable to come to grips with their own feelings, let alone their lover's feelings. But this time, especially in this election year, when people seem more divided as to the direction of the country, this song speaks to the disconnect we have with each other. Hopefully, by looking past each other will we be able to look past the ideologies and rhetoric and realize that we're all in this together, and that it's best to try to find common ground no matter what our differences.

This song is truly one of Billy's best. I've been going through tough times recently and I've turned to this song because it has always brought a peace to my soul and a tear to my eye whenever I listen to it.
