Breathing from a hole in my lung
I had no one
But faces in front of me
Racing through the void in my head
To find traces of a good luck academy
Sparks ignite and trade them for thought
About no one
And nothing in particular
Washed the sickened socket and drove
Resent nothing
There's good will inside of me
Wake me up low with a fever
Walking in a straight line
Set me on fire in the evening
Everything will be fine
Waking up strong in the morning
Walking in a straight line
Lately I'm a desperate believer
But walking in a straight line
Something I will never forget
I felt desperate
And stuck to the marrow
Invisible to everyone else
I'm a sex change
And a damsel with no heroine
Wake me up low with a fever
Walking in a straight line
Set me on fire in the evening
Everything will be fine
Waking up strong in the morning
Walking in a straight line
Lately I'm a desperate believer
But walking in a straight line
I don't need no time to say
There's no changing yesterday
If we keep talking and
I keep walking in straight lines
Wake me up low with a fever
Walking in a straight line
Set me on fire in the evening
Everything will be fine
Waking up strong in the morning
Walking in a straight line
Lately I'm a desperate believer
But walking in a straight line
Just wanted to jump on the bandwagon about this debate about "morning" and "modern". Someone said you can hear the D, but in fact what you are hearing is an over-emphasis of the N. And as someone else said it's mornin'. It's interesting to hear about different people's interpretations of the song. I guess it's songs like these that mean different things to different people depending on their experiences. From what I know of Daniel Johns, that he has been in the music industry since his early teens, it sounds like he is overcoming his demons, including the anorexia, and straight line doesn't refer to drugs, but a metaphor, which if you're familiar with Silverchair, you will know Daniel Johns uses in a lot of his songs. And whoever said that Silverchair has sold out has got to be kidding me. The whole grunge thing was in the 90s, the whole Emo thing was at the start of the decade, it shows the versatility of the band to not remain in the one pocket and expand their musical horizons. For instance on Diorama, he played a harpsichord on Across the Night. For those that don't know what a harpsichord is, it's the instrument in the song that sounds like a clangy piano. It was also the instrument of choice of Johann Sebastian Bach. So does that mean he's sold out? That he isn't grungy? Anyway, these are my thoughts, some may agree, some may disagree, but a lot of my thoughts are based on fact. Thanx

Silverchair have NOT sold out | Reviewer: Pommie in Perth | 10/19/2007
The reason why Silverchair have poppy songs now is because Daniel has moved on from anorexia and is NOW happy, the previous albums were written when he had depression and anorexia, my favourite is Freakshow. As for what straight lines is about I personally feel it relates to anorexia.. as a former anorexic myself. Having an eating disorder is like being a drug addict its an addiction so i can see how straight lines can sound like its about drug addiction.
Bugger I missed them at Claremont Oval

I never thought he was gay until I saw this video. He has on a midriff vest and when he dances little rainbows fly out of his hands. How much more obvious is "strait lines"?
omg...silverchair desreve no respect from me they hav totally sold out! look at how poppy there melodies are whatever happened to freak? or the album diorama, which expressed daniels pain and struggle through anorexia what does daniel express in reflections of a sound and try to keep losing sleep where he looks like a complete knob. The day he cut of all his hair was the day he sold out and lost all my respect.

maybe it could be a song about a new or old relationship with god and how a trying time in life can make you feel differently but you just search for the understanding that everyday brings...maybe losing a loved one or friend and trying to deal with it everyday but by the end you start to ware down when you still can't find a good reason for everything but then a new day starts and so does the process and everyday seems to become easier and easier with time...
I think not!! | Reviewer: halle | 8/22/2007
To the reviewer Sarah Kaminsky: Why on earth would he be 'waking up strong in the modern'? modern what? After all he has just been set on fire in the EVENING!! And now that everything will be fine, he can wake up strong in the MORNING!! Of course as long as he keeps walking in a straight line, he realises that everything will be fine.
The lyrics are fine just the way they are above.
thanx halle xxx
What the song is about...? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/14/2007
I wonder if this song is about someone with a fatal illness. If you've ever been ill, you feel better when you wake up and it seems worse at night. Possibly, the person of whom the song is written by, is HIV possitive and this is why he is saying he can't go back and change things, what's done is done...or perhaps, it is about addiction, and when he refers to waking up to lower the fever, it is getting the fix, or when he ignites at night, and so on, he's referring to the smoking, freebasing etc.

It is definitely morning. Take it from a fellow Aussie who was born in the same city. He says mornin'. Plus it creates a good juxtaposition with the previous line "Set me on fire in the evening".
As for what its about, could be about the lead singer's anorexia as people have mentioned. But could also be about drug addiction. Coz I can't see why an anorexic would "walk a straight line" whereas drugs makes sense.
Waking up strong in the morning, walking in a straight line.
That is the way it goes.
This song is such a great song, I think. The lyrics are so much happier in this song actually in this whole cd. It's a much more uplifting song. It sounds like they have got their shit together and are making a better come back. They are happy again and making great music..once again. I'm proud, this song really speaks to me and to those true Silverchair fans, I'm sure you know what I mean :)
