Stop The Dams Lyrics - Gorillaz

Review The Song (20)

When you're smoking tinfoil in the morning
It's gonna be a cold day
When you're keeping everything inside you
It can only hurt you

Unrelated sounds
The sun will shine again
You hold it in your hands

This land is a young land let it stay that way
Its pollution only turns you into something you don't want to see in the Worner
A reflection of them that you receive

You don't own the sun
And the sun won't shine again
So maybe you're all in love
With Aluminium

The cling and a clang
Is the metal in my head when I walk
sponsored links
I hear a sort of, this tinging noise
Cling clang
The cling clang
So many things happen while walking
The metal in my head clangs and clings as I walk
Freaks my balance out
So the natural thought
Is just clogged up
Totally clogged up
So we need to unplug these dams
And make the the natural flow
It sort of freaks me out
We need to unplug the dams
You cannot stop the natural flow of thought
With a cling and a clang

And wake me up again until
We're Aluminium
You hold it in your hands
The sun will shine again
The sun will shine again
The sun will shine again
The sun will shine again
The sun will shine again
The sun will shine again

Smoking tin foil in the morning refers to chasing the dragon which is how you smoke heroin. It is the only way it can be smoked so that's exactly what he's referring to. Makes sense when you think about it that way.

my feelings. | Reviewer: Amber | 4/19/12

I like to think of this song as dealing with emotions. When I hear this song, it makes me feel better when i'm depressed. I recently lost someone who was very special to me and i hate when my feelings get trapped.. i just wish that person knew how i felt about them before they slipped away..

A Protest Song | Reviewer: Jonjon | 10/2/11

This is one of my favorite songs by Albarn. It's actually a protest song. There was this company that was going to make a dam and destroy a whole area of wildlife somewhere in Iceland I think. I think it was Iceland. Anyways, he did an early version of this live with another band to protest this aluminum refinery from destroying a massive piece of wildlife.

It's About emotions | Reviewer: Jon | 8/12/11

I think it is about emotions and "keeping things inside/bottling emotions up" kind of like dams hold back water (water meaning emotions) and when the man talks about cling clang in his head and how unbearable it is, he means he holds In so much emotion it effects the normal things he does (like walking. And the tinfoil reference represents drugs, so the drugs may be causing this depression.

Tin Foil Reality | Reviewer: james | 5/8/11

Yea, if you're new to Albarn, you probably missed the references to this song... When he was with Blur, heroin broke up that band... Albarn has a few songs where he references heroin.. Beetlebum, one of Blur's greatest, references smoking tinfoil to get the last remnants of drugs off the tinfoil...

Sorry, not a global warming song... nothing to do with Iceland... Damon has had some real issues in the years, but he remains the best touring man and the best songwriter in decades :P

Such a great song! | Reviewer: Lydia | 12/18/10

Today was the first time I heard it. And I love it. Then I looked up the lyrics, and now I love it even more. :) I've never heard this kind of song before, and I LOVE IT when he's talking like that. ''With a CLING..and a CLANG'' Haha so great.

To me, it's about how people hold opinions which aren't their own. It's stuck like metal in your brain, and as metal, something which doesn't belong there. But sometimes you can hear that clinging and clanging messing up your mind, you realise it's not suppose to sound like that. It 'freaks your balance out' and you start to have doubts about what the truth is, what do you actually believe in.

''The sun will shine again, you hold it in your hands...'', but you 'don't own it''.
Could mean that though you have the power to change something, it doesn't mean you have the right to do so. And if you change it to something unnatural for it to be, then ''the sun wont shine again''.

Oh well, that's how I think. :)

Iceland | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/25/10

This song is a new version of a song Damon Albarn did in reaction to some dams being built in Iceland. I think in this version he tweaks the lyrics to include more than the environment being effected. He saw that dams can be very symbolic and so made them into this entity that prevents free thought, and free flow of nature, so he tackles two major ideas with one song. He's brilliant.

tin foil | Reviewer: Bryan | 1/2/10

Now that I've read some of the other reviews, I kinda question my initial reaction... but I thought that this song just refers to reminiscing the troubled youth most of us were, smoking pot out of foil or from a Coke can... which is really bad, mind you; and that weed clogs your neural pathways (like a dam). And then how pathetic and confused that the youth was and the monster that he/she would become... but that there's still hope. Idk, that's what it initially seemed like to me.

The references to "smoking tin foil" and being "in love with aluminum" really sounds like an ode to smoking pills. The line "Freaks my balance out" sounds like a classic symptom of free-basing pills: loosing your coordination. The line that says, "The metal in my head kind of clinks as I walk" in my opinion, refers to a myth that smoking tin foil leaves small traces of the aluminum in your body.

Dev, I'm pretty sure the song has nothing to do with global warming.

To me, it sounds like a Theremin or, possibly even just a metallophone.. Just a thought, really.

Great Song | Reviewer: Johnnie | 2/7/09

I read the lyrics more of a way to say how we are unable to think freely. How we sometimes have others thoughts impacted upon ourselves unable to think of a free world and having to stop paranoia basically.

Something closely resembling that anyways, it is a beautiful song. It kind of reminds me of The universal by Blur.

I think it's speech with very heavy flanging effect. Propably excerpts from the 'poem' at the end heaviy warped by flange.

Wow | Reviewer: Dev | 1/8/08

You know, it really speaks to modern dilemmas, like global warming, all the kind of crap we're doing to our environment. Plus, what better way to enhance the lyrics than to put it to such a great tune. I got a guitar 4 Xmas, plus D-sides, and, once I get good enough, this is going to be one of the first songs i learn. =]
