Stella Was A Diver And She Was Always Down Lyrics - Interpol

Review The Song (23)

When she walks down the street,
She knows there's people watching.
The building fronts are just fronts
To hide the people watching her

But she once fell through the street
Down a manhole in that bad way
The underground drip
Was just like her scuba days

Days
Daze
Days
Daze

She was all right because the sea was so airtight, she broke away
She is all right but she can't come out tonight, she broke away
She was all right, yeah the sea was so tight, air tight
She broke away, broke away

At the bottom of the ocean she dwells
At the bottom of the ocean she dwells
From crevices caressed by fingers
And fat blue serpent swells
Stella, Stella, Stella, Stella I love you

[Chorus]

Well, she was my catatonic sex toy, love-joy diver
She went down down down there into the sea,
Yeah she went down down down there, down there for me, right on

So good, oh yeah, right on

(There's something that's invisible,
There's some things you can't hide,
Try detect you when I'm sleeping,
In a wave you say goodbye...)

I freaking love this song! Interpol is my favourite band in the world, unfortunately I haven´t seen them performing... :(

You forgot the most important lyric | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/20/12

In the very beginning of the recording, Paul says "this one's called Stella Was a Diver and She Was Always Down." With his tongue in his cheek.

It's about blow jobs. This song is a joke.

I put the discography on my mp3 player and when I heard this song I wanted to cry. The day I heard it was a bad one, and the song made me feel so much better. It reminds me of my boyfriend and I, at least the times we've been seperated in the 8 years we've been together. I just think it's beautiful. I love indie lol.

I can't express how much I looooove this song. The lyrics are simply beautiful. I changed my name legally to Stella in 2008 because of this song!! I also saw Interpol play in Jan but unfortunatly they did NOT do this song!! I was super bummed...

beautiful and layered | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/29/10

If you listen very closely, around the catatonic sex toy love joy part, you can hear a man speaking the words just a little off from when Paul sings them as if they were part of a news report or something. Its eerie and strangely beautiful, just like the rest of the song. Its so haunting and strange and wrapped in so many emotions, its kind of hard to imagine anyone being able to recreate the experience of listening to it.

I'm about 97% sure that this song is a love song to a girl that was raped. Thats what happened to her when she fell through the street, thats why she goes into "the sea" when her and the narrator are being sexual. She withdraws mentally because she was scarred emotionally. It's beautiful.

Everyone thinks this is so beautiful and about love and stuff.... i thought it was about giving head.... "stella was a diver and she was always down there".... "she went down down down there for me.... right on its so good.... my catatonic sex toy, love joy diver

Lol my name's Stella. A friend of mine recommended this song to me (for that reason). I haven't listened to much Indie music over the years ... so is it a crime that I found the song a little boring and monotonous? Eep. I'm sorry!

I found the instrumentals great.

I can't even describe how great, meaningful, everlasting and excellent this song is!!! An absolute gem! As it ages, Stella Was a Diver And She Was Always Down will become one of the most wonderful indie rock pieces of art in music history!!! No words to describe how superb and outstanding this song is. Interpol has made their best song for a good while!

Absolutely fantastic song, intriguing and unique like the whole album, Interpol is in my Top3 (beside RHCP and Arctic Monkeys), and this album is probably the best debut I´ve ever listened to. Fantastic, amazing, wonderful, I mean can you describe them with words which are strong enough? I think not, I´ve just got to listen to them all over again, wishing that none of their songs would ever end...

Stella I love you!!! | Reviewer: Daniel | 12/10/07

Definitely this gem has to be regarded as one of TOTBL's masterpieces. Absolutely perfect, beautiful, intriguing, meaningful, full of passion and powerful images and metaphors... In a almost perfect album, Stella stands out as one of the most perfect songs this wonderful band has written...

paul banks i love you. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/10/07

agreed with every other review.
when paul sings: stella, i love you. stella, i love you. stella, i love you! i just fall apart.
it's so beautiful. i've seen them perform twice (in toronto) and the first time was in an intimate setting and when they played stella i was so happy it was amazing. so much emotion.

INTRPOL AT MANIFEST ! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/22/07

since 2005 , interpol hadn't come to mexico, it was amazing and even more when they played stella, i mean, Paul transmits a weird feeling, a strong one, when in this part: Stella i love you, Stella i love you, Stella I LOVE YOU, oh my god i have to confess you, i cried..

There're some things you can't hide... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/20/07

... and one of them is talent. Besides the great sound Interpol has, there are the lyrics. God, Paul Banks exhales talent, and passion...
