Stargazer Lyrics - Rainbow

Review The Song (13)

High noon, oh I'd sell my soul for water
Nine years worth of breakin' my back
There's no sun in the shadow of the wizard
See how he glides, why he's lighter than air?
Oh I see his face!

Where is your star?
Is it far, is it far, is it far?
When do we leave?
I believe, yes, I believe

In the heat and the rain
With whips and chains
To see him fly
So many die
We build a tower of stone
With our flesh and bone
Just to see him fly
sponsored links
But don't know why
Now where do we go?

Hot wind, moving fast across the desert
We feel that our time has arrived
The world spins, while we put his dream together
A tower of stone to take him straight to the sky
Oh I see his face!

Where is your star?
Is it far, is it far, is it far?
When do we leave?
Hey, I believe, I believe

In the heat and the rain
With whips and chains
Just to see him fly
Too many die
We build a tower of stone
With our flesh and bone
To see him fly
But we don't know why
Ooh, now where do we go

All eyes see the figure of the wizard
As he climbs to the top of the world
No sound, as he falls instead of rising
Time standing still, then there's blood on the sand
Oh I see his face!

Where was your star?
Was it far, was it far
When did we leave?
We believed, we believed, we believed

In heat and rain
With the whips and chains
To see him fly
So many died
We built a tower of stone
With our flesh and bone
To see him fly

But why
In all the rain
With all the chains
Did so many die
Just to see him fly

Look at my flesh and bone
Now, look, look, look, look,
Look at his tower of stone
I see a rainbow rising
Look there, on the horizon
And I'm coming home, I'm coming home, I'm coming home

Time is standing still
He gave back my will
Ooh ooh ooh ooh
Going home
I'm going home

My eyes are bleeding
And my heart is leaving here
I wish I'd known
But it's not home

Take me back
He gave me back my will
Ooh ooh ooh ooh

Going home
I'm going home

My eyes are bleeding
And my heart is leaving here
I wish I'd known
But it's not home

Take me back, take me back
Back to my home ooh, ooh, ooh

Not about pyramids. | Reviewer: Shigenji | 4/24/13

No your wrong, it's not just a story about the frickin pyramids. Sure it kinda matches, but that's irrelevant. It's deeper, it's about people being sheep to a ruler. Kinda like the people of germany to hitler. They were brainwashed and believed, and then sought to bring him the world.

Even tho he didnt whip his people, but technology changes.
Like usa today is brainwashed by the media. Then they elect people who will go to war for nothing.

The likeness to pyramids stuff your seeing, is just a cool setting for an epic song.

THE TRUE MEANING | Reviewer: SAM | 9/17/12

Correct! This song really IS about a pyramid!!If you examine every lyric you'll see that it matches to a pyramid building situation. There are many spots where you can understand that("I'd sell my soul for WATER","in the HEAT and rain","there is blood on the SAND",etc.etc.)
It is very obvious that the tower of stone IS the pyramid! And finally i searched on google about pyramids and it was telling that ancient Egyptians BELIEVED that the pyramid could launch the pharaoh's (the wizard's) soul to a specific star(I don't remember it's name now),an action that would make the pharaoh immortal!
Also the pyramids(most of them) were about 140m tall and needed alot of years to be completed("nine years with a break in my back").So the slaves were completely exhausted and tortured("with whips and chains") and many of them were dying.
I also believe that DIO who is representing one of pharaoh's slaves in this song is extremely mad when he says, near the end after pharaoh's death, "where was your star, was it far?,was it far? because he understands that all this torment was for nothing and he also sings it differntly than before with an ironic and simultaneously angry pace!
And thats all!My desription matches perfectly to the lyrics.

Guys, whether it is or is not about all the opinions here, stop trying to look for so many hidden meanings when there is a story hitting you straight in the face. It IS about the slaves building the pyramid (tower of stone) for the pharaoh. The star is the star that the tomb in the pyramid is directed to. Etc., etc. it's all about that. It's a brilliant song though, RJD is a pure master! BTW this song reminds me of Creeping Death by Metallica - similar story.

I think too much might be being made here of the "deeper meaning" associated with the lyrics. Whether or not any of the opinions are correct, I think the story told within should be taken at face value and we should all celebrate the fact that RJD/RB were so talented to craft this incredible, iconic song. I've listened to it since it came out in '75 and it still has the power to move me every time. One of my favourite songs EVER.

Quick note : James LaBrie, your vocals on the DT cover destroyed it. Sitck to your screamo stuff and don't attempt to sing songs you can't do justice to.

I can't believe none of the dolts on this page even came close to what this song is about. Rainbow fans must be pretty dim. The song is about the Hebrew slaves in Egypt building the pyramids. The "wizard" is the pharaoh. This is of course pre-Moses and Dio sings from the point of the view of the slaves. They never lost their faith in God.

religions | Reviewer: Elzelgator | 10/22/11

in my opinion this song is about religions, and the wizard is like a monk or a priest and also slaves are like us.they are like normal people.wizard command them to make tower. tower is the only hope for the people who want a better life. better life is heaven. slaves want to believe the wizard. because it is the only hope for second life. slaves did everything for the wizard. and then they want to see some signs from the wizard.

when wizard falls down, slaves are shocked. but they continued to believing him.because he was their only hope. when time comes for death, they continued to believe him,but they understand that there isnt any heaven for their second life."but it is not home..."

and also star equals to god. because after wizard falls down. they said "whre was you star" it means "why didnt your god help you?"

Long Live The Spirit of Dio! | Reviewer: Wendy Yocum | 8/8/11

I have Only been a Rock Fan,for a Few Years Now,but, just even Reading these lyrics brings back Memories of Ronnie James Dio: i also am quite the Fan of Richie Blackmore,Rainbow and Deep Purple.

I think what Rainbow was trying to say here, too(You know this music also teaches, good lessons if you listen)is alot of times, following some people, just because they promise you a Good Life, and say that their way is Right, doesn't make them right,or even good people;Be Careful who you believe and what you believe:)

Stargazer and an old B/W movie | Reviewer: Mike B | 6/22/10

All I can say is that I have a memory from my youth of watching al old, probably silent B/W movie, which contained this story almost exactly. The tower had a clockwork mechanism that was supposed to suspend the wizard (pharoah or priest) in the air, and allow him to fly around the tower. Needless to say, the wire broke, said wizard converted himself into a sandy omelette, and the slaves who believed he could do it were lost.

If Dio or someone he knew saw the movie, it would explain it all. Of course, the movie was most likely based on some legend, story, or biblical event.... AARRGH!

My guess is this is a song inspired by the Lord of the Rings; Gandalf's imprisonment at the top of Saruman's tower, his fall onto an Eagle's back and/or in Moria with the balrog, his return from Moria as a white wizard; and how he inspired the heros to fight the enemies, Saruman (lesser enemy) and Sauron (greater enemy)

Stargazer lyrics interpretation | Reviewer: morningstar | 3/20/08

A song about the Antichrist? I've heard some people interpret it as a song about Hitler, and the following song "A Light in the Back" as a song about Germans going home after the war. "Did he really let us go...."

yes | Reviewer: Cotts | 12/31/07

Yes I think so. Thanks for giving the feedback. There is a lot written about this song but nothing about the lyric content. Maybe it is Dio's voice but the song has had me entranced ever since i heard it.

what i think | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/16/07

of course it is.the wizard wanted to reach the sky.he's kinda crazy and powerful tyrant obsessed by this idea.they are all his slaves and awe him and build a tower for him.he was kinda tyranical father for them- like in some religions (and fashism too)that's what i understand.i think that the slaves kinda take it to heart too - that "where is your star" sounds quite sympathetic.overmore i always thought- "i believe i believe" what does he believe in?!i think they felt as a part of a whole-and together they will do the greatest deed, and they took all these pains for the cause-something like the tower of babel(and it ends much the same way),and when the wizard falled down it "gave them back their will"and they had to face the world ,realized they wasted their time and had to make their way to home.but i think that the song is basically about the wizard and his crazy dream and his star.
Cuz we all have stars and bild our castles in the sky.See - what a deep meaning. And it is a nice tale too.And generally nice song. And nice all.Right?Did i get it?

why | Reviewer: Cotts | 9/22/07

I have not heard any discussion on these lyrics.
I love the song but the lyrics sound like its about cult ledership, "He gave me back our will" and etc. Does anybody else share these thoughts ?
