Stairway to heaven Lyrics - Led Zeppelin

Review The Song (150)

There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven.
When she gets there she knows, if the stars are all close
With a word she can get what she came for.
Ooh, ooh, and she's buying a stairway to heaven.

There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure
'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings.
In a tree by the brook, there's a songbird who sings,
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven.
Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it makes me wonder.

There's a feeling I get when I look to the west,
And my spirit is crying for leaving.
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees,
And the voices of those who stand looking.
Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it really makes me wonder.

And it's whispered that soon if we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason.
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long
And the forests will echo with laughter.

If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now,
It's just a spring clean for the May queen.
Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on.
And it makes me wonder.

Your head is humming and it won't go, in case you don't know,
The piper's calling you to join him,
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow, and did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind.

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul.
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold.
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last.
When all is one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll.

And she's buying a stairway to heaven.

They Wrote this in Prime Thought Process, THC filled mind | Reviewer: steve jackson | 1/11/13

With the help of some of the worlds best THC and being in a Scotland Castle for a few months in the earlier 70's they put their great minds to work and wrote a song to mess with peoples head so that in 30-40 years people would sit around asking "what do you think they meant when we write this song". They were so far ahead of their time they knew they had a niche market.

the main point | Reviewer: Brett | 9/27/12

Money can't buy everything (read the first two lines of the song where Robert Plant was being cynical). There's true value in anything that brings people together. This song is proof of this, it is a true "stairway to heaven", as opposed to some staircase that was advertised in the window of some store as being a way to go to heaven. It would be different if the lady was buying the stairway to heaven for someone else, but she's characterized as selfish... I like to imagine a rich, lonely and old lady wearing a lot of jewelry, a mink coat, and carrying a diamond-studded Gucci bag filled with money she could have donated to needy children, someone like Cruella de Vil.

Wrong Lyrics | Reviewer: LedHappy | 9/21/12

It's "...if the stores are all closed" NOT stars are all close... whoever did that is stupid. Also anybody trying to find meaning in this song is stupid, Zeppelin has said themselves that they just put random metaphorical lines together to make this song. So any meaning you find in the lyrics are unique to you... theres no ACTUAL meaning to it.

Stairway to Heaven considered interpretation | Reviewer: Lama John Heaviside | 8/12/12

The song is a lovely poem playing on a double interpretation of Gold....using the Whitman's "Nothing Gold Can Stay" and the idea of buying your way into Heaven. It's meant to be felt not reasoned with entirely.........but although using the idea of Judeao Christian term "Heaven"....not much else here suggests any other overtly religious statement. A piper leading us to reason......is our intuitions that tell us we're on the wrong path of materialism......time to change the road you're on".....obviously we can choose otherwise............not much more complicated then that, as far as the playing it backwards stuff......Im trying to even not mention it Im so tired of hearing about it.....If there's anything antithetically Christian about this its that he's speaking of a universal truth about how we live our lives and perhaps at the end......there really is a moment of reckoning.....there may very well be something else our present life transitions to.......and it can't be bought. I think if there's anything contradictory to a Christian Idea......perhaps......its the way much of Church based Christianity has presented going to a permanent happiness in the life after this may occur by paying monetary homage to those who claim to hold the key to Heaven through Lord Jesus....who they claim to represent.....and perhaps not. I've played this backwards....couldn't make much sense of it and don't care to. The Satanic or Occultist stuff of that time was more a reaction against the materialism of church not the sanctity of the truth of the core of either the reality.....or the ideal (any scientific atheist can appreciate self sacrifice for others) of Christ.

beautiful song | Reviewer: anonymous dude | 7/22/12

The song is very metaphorical, so much so that I think it's meaning depends on someone's religious beliefs, so the lyrics may seem quite ambivalent. But "gold" does have two meanings in the song, where I think it symbolizes anything of this earth in the beginning of the song, and then symbolizes something divine, of Heaven, during the last verse. But all in all, I think the song is about whether one should doubt God or be skeptical about the worship of God. What I see is that if someone is skeptical about the actual worship of God, this equates to being skeptical about the existence of God. And if someone is skeptical about the existence of God, then what could it possibly mean to be religious and worship God anyway? He's saying that some things on this earth, regardless of their origin, are here to stay. And
some other stuff too, I think.

See For Yourself | Reviewer: Awyn | 5/16/12

Why don't the skeptics try and record your own voice singing the famous line as best as you can at replicating Robert Plant, and see for yourself that it does in fact sing a song to "sweet Satan" I know because I am a huge Led head and I was skeptical that "my" band could have a satanic message in the lyrics. I thought it was just special effects since you really can't believe everything you see online, so I set up a mic, turned on my sound recorder, sang the lyrics, reversed them, and low and behold what did i discover? The lyrics that i recorded in my own voice with just a mic and windows sound recorder proved that there is a message, satanic or not, who knows, but it does refer to Satan. Its not That hard to imagine what words will sound like if they are played backwards unless you are tone deaf or just plain deaf. We all have language receptors in our brains. When we are born we are capable of making every sound known to man and even some that are not known from the rustic sounds of the french language to the clicks and tweets of an African tribe, but as we grow we are usually exposed to one language, maybe two, so we lose that ability to make other sounds because we exercise only the receptors in our brains that respond to the language that we hear on a daily basis. It's just like anything if you don't exercise it or use it then you lose it. So it is very easy for someone to write a song and anticipate how it would sound backwards.

Who cares. | Reviewer: Joe | 5/9/12

I don't know what this song is about, I get too caught up in the beauty of the tune. Who cares anyway. I know what I believe. If Page wants to worship what ever that's his business and he will pay for his mistakes or not. Just enjoy that song or don't. I love it.

Stairway to heaven | Reviewer: Joe from Saint Joseph Michigan | 4/19/12

This is absolutely the most meaningful classic rock song of all time. The lyrics of "There's time to change the road you're on", "your stairway lies on the whispering wind", " a new day will dawn for those who stand long" have, in my opinion, an obvious christian meaning. Even if Jimmy did not do it consiously. As the song ends with Jimmy singing a haunting "And she's buying the stairway to heaven", we get the feel the futility of trying to "BUY" our way.

why are people so stupid ? The greatest song of all time cannot be about some satanic bullshit. How can you possibly write this song, calculating how its sounding if you play it backwards.. ? If any human being would write a song that were supposed to be played backwards it would be a terrible song.

sorry im bad in english..

Really? Satanic? | Reviewer: Sue | 1/25/12

I'm a little late to the party. This is directed at Bennie Ann Dajets who thinks Battle of Evermore was written about and because of Jimmy Page's obsession with the occult. Um...it was written about the Lord of the Rings trilogy. LOL Just like Ramble On. The lyrics even mention Gollum (my precious.) LMAO...dark arts.

"satanic messages" | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/5/12

Anyone who listens to this song backwards can clearly hear the "message" however I don't think it was on purpose, it's not like you can sit there and figure out how to make a song into a backwards praise to the devil while still having it make sense forward. I don't personally know the people of Led Zeppelin or what they do in their spare time, but if the writer does have some satanic influence in his life that may have been the reason it was written so quickly. Just saying.

As far as the song itself it's a catchy little tune and I like it.

Theres a big mistake | Reviewer: Sgt. Pepper | 12/4/11

The first guitar solo is in the wrong place. Well there shouldn't even be a first guitar solo, but some people consider the part after "in a tree by the brook" to be a short solo (tho it's more of a fill)

speaking from experience!!!!!! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/3/11

My parents owned radio stations for over forty years...the FCC use to care about the lyrics from song writers. If my parents alowed trash on the air the FCC could take their licence away. They use to care about trash over the radio! Stairway to Heaven hit the airways when the FCC was still a responsible goverment agency. My parents played this song thousands of times.....my Mom and Daddy are people who care what goes out for their listeners.....I wish you could still say that about the FCC!!!!!!!

#1 classic rock song of all time. The sheer beauty of this song can sometimes be a little overwhelming but there's a reason this song has been voted number one of all time. IMHO, not ther best song ever but certainely in top 20 if not top 10. I personally prefer Ride the Lightning by Metallica and Soothsayer by Buckethead. But this one is a damn masterpiece and it used to be my favorite and it's still up there with the best of the best. Rock on; Jimmy, Robert, John, and John.

what I think is the meaning of this song | Reviewer: ledzeppfan96 | 8/30/11

I believe that this song is all about redemption. For example: "Yes there are 2 paths you can go back but in the long run." (The reason I posted this is because this is a school project.) THIS IS THE BEST SONG EVER
