Stairway to heaven Lyrics - Led Zeppelin

Review The Song (159)

There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven.
When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for.
Ooh, ooh, and she's buying a stairway to heaven.

There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure
'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings.
In a tree by the brook, there's a songbird who sings,
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven.
Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it makes me wonder.

There's a feeling I get when I look to the west,
And my spirit is crying for leaving.
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees,
And the voices of those who stand looking.
Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it really makes me wonder.

And it's whispered that soon if we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason.
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long
And the forests will echo with laughter.

If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now,
It's just a spring clean for the May queen.
Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on.
And it makes me wonder.

Your head is humming and it won't go, in case you don't know,
The piper's calling you to join him,
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow, and did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind.

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul.
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold.
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last.
When all is one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll.

And she's buying a stairway to heaven.

It starts out about a rich woman wanting to buy her way through an afterlife...the songbird is a personwarning about ideas and thoughts being placed and not our own(I'm guessing like overwhelming desire and acting on impulse, or voices in your head being from an outside source)
Then he says he wants his soul to leave his body when facing west, usually east is seen as good due to the sun rising in the east, that said I think he's talking about wanting to go dark or temptation.
Smoke rings in trees is probably a portal which is why he hears voices from them.

It makes him wonder because he doesnt quite understand it all i think this is a hillucinated drug induced or channeled experience he is describing.

The piper calling us to reason could be god or The devil, or our true inner self.
The Piper however sounds like satan, calling us to reason or science for answers instead of god.
If you know about meditation you know there is a sound like tinitis coming from the inside of your brain and the reason they say "ohhhhm" over and over is to resonate on that frequency and attune their inner song to the frequency desired. Playing with this can invite things into you so its unwise to practice alone.
That said "soon if we all sing in tune a new dawn" sounds like the age of the new world order. Of course it is believe Christians will leave for heaven and sinners will stay, the laughter of the woods could mean the spirits that are laughing at the damned. The same ones from the tree smoke circles who I would guess are in cahoots with the "piper" the pied Piper was a bad guy don't forget.
Then the sound in your head that won't go, being the piper calling to you, is that "tinitis sound", I believe he thinks if you harmonize body with mind in this way you will have some answers.

He is saying how shallow the woman is by the stairway to heaven line. But is his version of spirituality right? Who knows. I'm just guessing

The wrong road | Reviewer: Manni | 3/27/14

Maybe the song is about drugs or anything i dont know.I definately know that humans went down the wrong road when they started using nuclear power.
All the warnings were not listened to.On march 11th 2011 the gate to hell was finally opened. For all to end.

its about the separate reality of drugs? | Reviewer: cindy | 2/4/14

To an elderly ill woman who had a fantasic youth, the song makes perfect sense. I never ventured into the 60's world of drugs, but it made sense back then. But, as all classics are timeless, so is this musical masterpiece. The lady is some kind of drug that gets a person high. Everything stems from that... morality, conscience, ethics etc. Now that I take drugs for illness, as I experience the "high" I find the song sings to my separate realiy--a much desired oblivian. And yes, I am a retired literature/biology teacher!

Were They Unknowingly Programmed? | Reviewer: Samuel Poe | 2/3/14

I am very aware of the Seven Fires Prophecy which mentions 2 roads the white race can go down. If they go down the wrong road, it will bring great destruction to the earth. They have an opportunity to change the road they are going down but let's be honest! It is everywhere to be seen exactly what path or road the whites are on. Diversions dominate but also the ever presence of hate and racism. That promotion of evil intentions is causing many people of all races to secretly conceal a great fear and mistrust for their leaders. If Led Zepplin was programmed by an entity to write Stairway To Heaven, the one message in the lyrics we should be very careful to interpret is "And She's Buying A Stairway To Heaven." To non whites that message is foul. I don't blame Led Zepplin for the lyrics because i'm aware of programming. We are all programmed by god. We all can use the lyrics of Stairway To Heaven to attempt to learn of anything that is important in the future. There is an important message in the lyrics of Stairway To Heaven however. That is "There's Still Time To Change The Road You're On." The whites are on 2 different roads. They must choose the right road. The road of diversion is tricky. The road of extreme violence is worse. What that obviously represents is clear. The whites must choose another road. That road must be the promotion of living alongside non white nations. That does not mean people of all races living together in the same communities. Intelligent non whites know what that represents. They will not tolerate it because they have a great fear of the whites. A new road is there if white leaders actually want to walk it. We can't choose what road the whites go down. Stairway To Heaven is about the Seven Fires Prophecy.

Stairway to Heaven Review | Reviewer: Mrs. Myers | 1/18/14

This song is a spiritual song. I would not even consider that any Satanic entity brought this song forth, because Satan has never given any good advice or wisdom or revelation. I am going to guess Mr. Plant was at a pivitol point in his own personal and career development. A stairway, gold, greed, and two roads--all pretty easy to understand.

Not intentional | Reviewer: KMLT | 12/13/13

That text played backwards is definitely written and sung without any intention for it to tell something backwards. However, to my knowledge and belief, Satan can do with us, who don't believe in God and especially if we are in some kind of occult, spiritism or into some kind of drugs which makes us hallucionate, things without our knowledge. How many great songs was written because of the inspiration of the drugs? How many rock stars uses drugs? Answer to both of those questions is - A LOT. I think that the Satan speaks through those that have weakest will and soul and are entangled in bad lifestyles. Inspiration given by Satan is the easiest and the strongest, compared to inspiration given by God. That's why many songs has many meanings for interpretation without anyone really sure what does it mean and still are fascinated with it.

So Much Pretention All Around That Some People Will Even Try Buying Their WayTo Walk On A Cloud | Reviewer: Stanley Leonaire | 9/20/13

The immaculate guitarist / lyrical genius Robert Plant was spot on with his lyrics on "Stairways To Heaven", as a young man growing up.I have listened to this song over & over again, and in all biblical sense this song has help me get through life unscarth ~ "If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now,
It's just a spring clean for the May queen.
Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on.
And it makes me wonder".

Very ambivalent, yes it was not just the masterful guitar of Robert Plant i got hook on as some may think........There's Always ~ hope once you have faith ~ despite of adversity. Again KUDOS to classical ROBERT PLANT

Good song,good guitar,enjoy | Reviewer: Jordan | 5/24/13

People everywhere, who try to find some kind of a meaning
in songs, there just words that kind of fit in with the beat
and melody.Relax and enjoy.Even if there were no words in the
song,it would be one of the top 10

Backwards ! Back Masking | Reviewer: Mark | 5/25/13

When Plant sings " Yes there are 2 paths you can go by.....) Plant pronounced it as " nnnYes there ..... " - nnnYes backwards sounds like Saten when you hear it Try it, record nnnnYes and play it backwards. Did he do this on purpose when they recorded it? I doubt it.

They Wrote this in Prime Thought Process, THC filled mind | Reviewer: steve jackson | 1/11/13

With the help of some of the worlds best THC and being in a Scotland Castle for a few months in the earlier 70's they put their great minds to work and wrote a song to mess with peoples head so that in 30-40 years people would sit around asking "what do you think they meant when we write this song". They were so far ahead of their time they knew they had a niche market.

the main point | Reviewer: Brett | 9/27/12

Money can't buy everything (read the first two lines of the song where Robert Plant was being cynical). There's true value in anything that brings people together. This song is proof of this, it is a true "stairway to heaven", as opposed to some staircase that was advertised in the window of some store as being a way to go to heaven. It would be different if the lady was buying the stairway to heaven for someone else, but she's characterized as selfish... I like to imagine a rich, lonely and old lady wearing a lot of jewelry, a mink coat, and carrying a diamond-studded Gucci bag filled with money she could have donated to needy children, someone like Cruella de Vil.

Wrong Lyrics | Reviewer: LedHappy | 9/21/12

It's "...if the stores are all closed" NOT stars are all close... whoever did that is stupid. Also anybody trying to find meaning in this song is stupid, Zeppelin has said themselves that they just put random metaphorical lines together to make this song. So any meaning you find in the lyrics are unique to you... theres no ACTUAL meaning to it.

Stairway to Heaven considered interpretation | Reviewer: Lama John Heaviside | 8/12/12

The song is a lovely poem playing on a double interpretation of Gold....using the Whitman's "Nothing Gold Can Stay" and the idea of buying your way into Heaven. It's meant to be felt not reasoned with entirely.........but although using the idea of Judeao Christian term "Heaven"....not much else here suggests any other overtly religious statement. A piper leading us to our intuitions that tell us we're on the wrong path of materialism......time to change the road you're on".....obviously we can choose otherwise............not much more complicated then that, as far as the playing it backwards stuff......Im trying to even not mention it Im so tired of hearing about it.....If there's anything antithetically Christian about this its that he's speaking of a universal truth about how we live our lives and perhaps at the end......there really is a moment of reckoning.....there may very well be something else our present life transitions to.......and it can't be bought. I think if there's anything contradictory to a Christian Idea......perhaps......its the way much of Church based Christianity has presented going to a permanent happiness in the life after this may occur by paying monetary homage to those who claim to hold the key to Heaven through Lord Jesus....who they claim to represent.....and perhaps not. I've played this backwards....couldn't make much sense of it and don't care to. The Satanic or Occultist stuff of that time was more a reaction against the materialism of church not the sanctity of the truth of the core of either the reality.....or the ideal (any scientific atheist can appreciate self sacrifice for others) of Christ.

beautiful song | Reviewer: anonymous dude | 7/22/12

The song is very metaphorical, so much so that I think it's meaning depends on someone's religious beliefs, so the lyrics may seem quite ambivalent. But "gold" does have two meanings in the song, where I think it symbolizes anything of this earth in the beginning of the song, and then symbolizes something divine, of Heaven, during the last verse. But all in all, I think the song is about whether one should doubt God or be skeptical about the worship of God. What I see is that if someone is skeptical about the actual worship of God, this equates to being skeptical about the existence of God. And if someone is skeptical about the existence of God, then what could it possibly mean to be religious and worship God anyway? He's saying that some things on this earth, regardless of their origin, are here to stay. And
some other stuff too, I think.

See For Yourself | Reviewer: Awyn | 5/16/12

Why don't the skeptics try and record your own voice singing the famous line as best as you can at replicating Robert Plant, and see for yourself that it does in fact sing a song to "sweet Satan" I know because I am a huge Led head and I was skeptical that "my" band could have a satanic message in the lyrics. I thought it was just special effects since you really can't believe everything you see online, so I set up a mic, turned on my sound recorder, sang the lyrics, reversed them, and low and behold what did i discover? The lyrics that i recorded in my own voice with just a mic and windows sound recorder proved that there is a message, satanic or not, who knows, but it does refer to Satan. Its not That hard to imagine what words will sound like if they are played backwards unless you are tone deaf or just plain deaf. We all have language receptors in our brains. When we are born we are capable of making every sound known to man and even some that are not known from the rustic sounds of the french language to the clicks and tweets of an African tribe, but as we grow we are usually exposed to one language, maybe two, so we lose that ability to make other sounds because we exercise only the receptors in our brains that respond to the language that we hear on a daily basis. It's just like anything if you don't exercise it or use it then you lose it. So it is very easy for someone to write a song and anticipate how it would sound backwards.
