Stairway to heaven Lyrics

Performed by Led Zeppelin
Review The Song (145)

There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven
When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for
Ooh, ooh, and she's buying a stairway to heaven

There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure
'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings
In a tree by the brook, there's a songbird who sings
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misleading
Ooh, it makes me wonder
Ooh, it makes me wonder

There's a feeling I get when I look to the west
And my spirit is crying for leaving
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees
And the voices of those who stand looking
and it makes me wonder
really makes me wonder

And it's whispered that soon if we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long
And the forest will echo with laughter

GUITAR SOLO

If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now,
It's just a spring clean from the May Queen
Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on
Ooh, it makes me wonder
Ooh, Ooh, it makes me wonder

Your head is humming and it won't go, in case you don't know
The piper's calling you to join him
Dear lady, can't you hear the wind blow, and did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind

GUITAR SOLO

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last
When all is one and one is all, yeah
To be a rock and not to roll.

And she's buying the stairway to heaven

See For Yourself | Reviewer: Awyn | 5/16/12

Why don't the skeptics try and record your own voice singing the famous line as best as you can at replicating Robert Plant, and see for yourself that it does in fact sing a song to "sweet Satan" I know because I am a huge Led head and I was skeptical that "my" band could have a satanic message in the lyrics. I thought it was just special effects since you really can't believe everything you see online, so I set up a mic, turned on my sound recorder, sang the lyrics, reversed them, and low and behold what did i discover? The lyrics that i recorded in my own voice with just a mic and windows sound recorder proved that there is a message, satanic or not, who knows, but it does refer to Satan. Its not That hard to imagine what words will sound like if they are played backwards unless you are tone deaf or just plain deaf. We all have language receptors in our brains. When we are born we are capable of making every sound known to man and even some that are not known from the rustic sounds of the french language to the clicks and tweets of an African tribe, but as we grow we are usually exposed to one language, maybe two, so we lose that ability to make other sounds because we exercise only the receptors in our brains that respond to the language that we hear on a daily basis. It's just like anything if you don't exercise it or use it then you lose it. So it is very easy for someone to write a song and anticipate how it would sound backwards.

Who cares. | Reviewer: Joe | 5/9/12

I don't know what this song is about, I get too caught up in the beauty of the tune. Who cares anyway. I know what I believe. If Page wants to worship what ever that's his business and he will pay for his mistakes or not. Just enjoy that song or don't. I love it.

Stairway to heaven | Reviewer: Joe from Saint Joseph Michigan | 4/19/12

This is absolutely the most meaningful classic rock song of all time. The lyrics of "There's time to change the road you're on", "your stairway lies on the whispering wind", " a new day will dawn for those who stand long" have, in my opinion, an obvious christian meaning. Even if Jimmy did not do it consiously. As the song ends with Jimmy singing a haunting "And she's buying the stairway to heaven", we get the feel the futility of trying to "BUY" our way.

why are people so stupid ? The greatest song of all time cannot be about some satanic bullshit. How can you possibly write this song, calculating how its sounding if you play it backwards.. ? If any human being would write a song that were supposed to be played backwards it would be a terrible song.

sorry im bad in english..

Really? Satanic? | Reviewer: Sue | 1/25/12

I'm a little late to the party. This is directed at Bennie Ann Dajets who thinks Battle of Evermore was written about and because of Jimmy Page's obsession with the occult. Um...it was written about the Lord of the Rings trilogy. LOL Just like Ramble On. The lyrics even mention Gollum (my precious.) LMAO...dark arts.

"satanic messages" | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/5/12

Anyone who listens to this song backwards can clearly hear the "message" however I don't think it was on purpose, it's not like you can sit there and figure out how to make a song into a backwards praise to the devil while still having it make sense forward. I don't personally know the people of Led Zeppelin or what they do in their spare time, but if the writer does have some satanic influence in his life that may have been the reason it was written so quickly. Just saying.

As far as the song itself it's a catchy little tune and I like it.

Theres a big mistake | Reviewer: Sgt. Pepper | 12/4/11

The first guitar solo is in the wrong place. Well there shouldn't even be a first guitar solo, but some people consider the part after "in a tree by the brook" to be a short solo (tho it's more of a fill)

speaking from experience!!!!!! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/3/11

My parents owned radio stations for over forty years...the FCC use to care about the lyrics from song writers. If my parents alowed trash on the air the FCC could take their licence away. They use to care about trash over the radio! Stairway to Heaven hit the airways when the FCC was still a responsible goverment agency. My parents played this song thousands of times.....my Mom and Daddy are people who care what goes out for their listeners.....I wish you could still say that about the FCC!!!!!!!

#1 classic rock song of all time. The sheer beauty of this song can sometimes be a little overwhelming but there's a reason this song has been voted number one of all time. IMHO, not ther best song ever but certainely in top 20 if not top 10. I personally prefer Ride the Lightning by Metallica and Soothsayer by Buckethead. But this one is a damn masterpiece and it used to be my favorite and it's still up there with the best of the best. Rock on; Jimmy, Robert, John, and John.

what I think is the meaning of this song | Reviewer: ledzeppfan96 | 8/30/11

I believe that this song is all about redemption. For example: "Yes there are 2 paths you can go back but in the long run." (The reason I posted this is because this is a school project.) THIS IS THE BEST SONG EVER

The Stairway to Awesomeness | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/16/11

This song is gorgeous... The lyrics are amazing and very deep, but I think some of you are analyzing the song a bit too much. I read an article on how he wrote the song, and in that article he wrote that most of the lyrics came to him spontaneously in around ten minutes while thinking of something to do with a girl who 'took from the world but gave nothing back'. He later worked on the lyrics a bit more with the band, but the rough idea was mainly spontaneous. Furthermore, please take note that lyrics are supposed to be very folky. This is shown in the Battle of Evermore aswell. It's really interesting to see everybody's point of view on this song but I think you're analyzing it a bit too much.

SOMETIMES ALL OF OUR THOUGHTS ARE MISLEADING | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/12/11

I completely agree with Michaela. IF the reversed version of the song was intended at all, it was meant to be a sort of "Sympathy for the Devil". Now, of course that is going to be taken the wrong way. I honestly do not care for your opinion, as it belongs to you. If you completely believe that EVERYONE who finds a particular individual interesting is automatically their prodigy, then you are: a blundering fool, or blinded by your own zealous attempts to see the truth. To the 14-year-old Anon, I agree in part with what you are saying. However, I do not believe this song is entirely about Capitalism in the Western Culture. To expand on your idea, Anon, look into the Great Schisms of the Catholic church. They sold indulgences, pieces of paper that would grant you the ability to bypass purgatory and enter the gates of heaven as if you were a V.I.P. Maybe that's what she's doing? Maybe this is sort of mocking the old ideas of the church. Maybe because of the fact that so many people at the time, and even now, believed they were satanists, the members of Led Zeppelin decided to write a song that would criticize those who criticized them. Eh, just my thoughts on that. Now for the song as a whole.

So, first stanza simply sets up the scenario. This lady* bought an indulgence, and thus believed she could sin all she wanted and not have to deal with any of the negative consequences. All she had to do was say the word, or show the paper, and she could enter the gates.

*Remember Eve? The first person to give into temptation? Well this woman is a reference to Eve, so to speak. The woman who gave into her temptation. She ate of the fruit and was banished from the garden.

Stanza two takes this woman to an abandoned town (as I've always imagined it) in which she sees a billboard that is most likely pointing to heaven. She is wary, because she knows words can mean different things, right? Let's say the sign says "heaven" with an arrow. It's blunt, but it works. Heaven can mean either the home of God, or just God. Okay, so we've established that. This sign could mean "the home of God is above you" or "God is above you". The home of God implies she will be safe in heaven; God implies she will face judgement. Fun, eh?

So bam! The narrator LOOKS west, and cries to leave for it. Direct reference to the splitting of the Catholic church. These indulgences were not the right thing; the Catholic church is screwed up; the people want out.

So the pied piper leads rats, correct? This next stanza simply implies that all humans are merely God's test subjects. Just praise him, stand strong in your beliefs, and in the end, he will summon you to heaven. This is the only way.

I'm going to tie the next two portions together, as I believe they are more effective this way. Plus they are the best part of the song, in my opinion. If something is rustling outside, and you can't quite make it out, don't be afraid, for God will keep you safe. Although I've given you this advice, you can do whichever seems best. But when the time comes, you can still repent, and God will salvage your soul. Finally, when you get that funny feeling in your head, listen to it. God has called your name, and your time for love is near.

I love the next two lines: "Dear lady, can't you hear the wind blow, and did you know, your stairway lies on the whispering wind?" This implies that SHE is the devil, doomed to wander the land forever, with no chance at redemption.

The ending is telling you to never forget who you are. Think of this: your shadow symbolizes all the negatives that have come from your life, all the darkness that makes up who you have become. He's saying that no matter what happens, no matter how many mistakes you have made, you will never be as bad as Satan. He will forgive you, no matter your history. But even so, even if you choose the correct path, the devil will still be there to tempt you; it's up to you to avoid him/her at all costs. And remember, she tried to buy the stairway to heaven; look where she ended up.

@Bennie Ann Dajets
SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT ALEISTER CROWLEY! I've heard too much about people who "worshiped" him in the last week to put up with anyone else doing so. There is a difference between worship and interest. I find Adolf Hitler to be an interesting man. He was brilliant, a genius, if I may. Does that mean I want to persecute an entire group of people, surrender them to mass slaughter, then attempt to take over the world? No. It may be enough to have me write about him, or maybe even buy an article of clothing or weapon he wore. That does NOT mean I worship him. So again. SHUT THE FUCK UP.

love is the stairway to heaven | Reviewer: riex | 6/18/11

I don’t see it as a satanic song, but just the oppisite, a Christian song. I try to explain why.
The woman is the symbol of materialism who thinks she can buy her a Stairway to heaven with all the glitter and gold. The song tells us that’s not possible. If we all call for love (the tune) than the piper will lead us to reason. Follow the lead and you will find out. Love is the only Stairway to heaven and also the woman (materialism) as to admit that.

What Jimmy Did | Reviewer: Bennie Ann Dajets | 6/16/11

As for all you criticizing people for calling this song satanic are more than likely right. What you're wrong about is the satanic influence on Led Zeppelin (especially Page) that caused them to write songs like "The Battle of Evermore". May I remind you all that Jimmy Page, (though he doesn't admit it) is a devoted follower of the black magician and satanist Alister Crowley. Jimmy Page was in fact so obsessed with Crowley that he bought his old house where Alsiter used to practice sex rituals and even human sacrifice. Just that fact alone would make one shudder. And then to have songs like Evermore (about the holy apocalypse favoring the "angel of light"), also featured on the same album (Zoso); it really makes me wonder if Stairway to Heaven is a song of the occult.
