Split Screen Sadness Lyrics

Performed by John Mayer
Review The Song (23)

And I don't know where you went when you left me but
Says here in the water you must be gone by now
I can tell somehow
One hand on the trigger of a telephone
Wondering when the call comes
Where you say it's alright
You got your heart right

Maybe I'll sleep inside my coat and
Wait on the porch 'til you come back home
Oh, right
I can't find a flight

We share the sadness
Split screen sadness

Two wrongs make it all alright tonight

ALl you need is love is a lie cause
We had love but we still said goodbye
Now we're tired, battered fighters

And it stings when it's nobody's fault
Cause there's nothing to blame at the drop of your name
It's only the air you took and the breath you left

Maybe I'll sleep inside my coat and
Wait on the porch 'til you come back home
Oh, right
I can't find a flight
So I'll check the weather wherever you are
Cause I wanna know if you can see the stars tonight
It might be my only right

We share the sadness
Split screen sadness

I called
Because
I just
Need to feel you on the line
Don't hang up this time
And I know it was me who called it over but
I still wish you'd fought me 'til your dying day
Don't let me get away

Cause I can't wait to figure out what's wrong with me
So I can say this is the way that I used to be
There's no substitute for time
Or for the sadness
Split screen sadness
We share the sadness

To me... | Reviewer: Tom | 1/2/12

To me, i'm lucky to have found someone who has had just as bad a past as I have with regards to love. Split Screen sadness, because even though our pasts were the same, the sadness we've both experienced before we met, I can feel what she felt. And I'm sure she can feel what I felt. We both loved and lost, and hopefully we can find it in ourselves to love again.

For anyone who has ever experienced the regret, the second guessing, the distance from someone emotionally and physically-this song is for you. All you need is love is a lie. Im split. My boyfriend is split. We are "battered fighters" and you only have so much fight in you until you throw up your flag. I dont mean to be a downer, but I do share the sadness. And i can see my boyfriend's sadness too. Split Screen Sadness.

the way it goes | Reviewer: hhurst | 12/17/09

i just love john mayers voice in this songs.. the raspy perfection is just what gets me. i feel like i completly understand this song, because ive been in a relationship for 4 years now and sometimes it just gets to the point that you want to leave oh so bad but you cant because you dont know anything else and when it all comes down to it you really do love that person and couldnt imagine your life without them. but in this song he actualy follows through with "breaking up" with them but its like he regrets what he did and he wants to take it back. everyone gets in their sad moods and i think this song woulda been written in a "sad mood." we all do things we regret and thats kind of what this is about, taking it back.

lets get this straight | Reviewer: anonymous | 10/9/08

okay. this song/john mayer is amazing for many reasons, but i'll just name a few..

first. the beatles are arguably the best or one of the best bands in the history of the world. musically, harmonically, lyrically.. and i feel only john mayer could have called them out properly. "all you need is love is a lie" .. it's a pretty big deal calling out the fucking beatles, and if you do that, you've got some balls. however, his statement is true (just as the beatles original statement was) because anyone who has ever been in love and then got their heart shattered could relate.

secondly, the production of this song is incredible, from the silky vocals going through a tube mic-pre to the synthesizer to the strings.. it is just a well done track.

his song writing has matured to a level that i didn't think was possible after releasing room for squares (which still remains one of the best pop/singer-songwriter with a hint of jazz records released in this generation)

lastly, and completely off point.. it seems as though john is doing what john wants to do. if he wants to play the blues in a small club without obnoxious fans screaming inbetween every other word, he does it. if he wants to lay low, he does it. it doesn't seem like he's oppressed by the value-torn industry that remains to be called "the music business." john mayer keeps it real, and i had a feeling from the start that he'd be the guy to be himself, keep his music real, and not give in to the usual bullshit that 99% of artists and listeners subject themselves to.

thanks for reading

john mayer is so freaking amazing.
most artists would write a song simply saying oh i miss you love please come back to me, but not john mayer. not john mayer. he can say things in a way only john mayer can, and this is why i love him. he is the greatest artist on the face of the planet.

Great title, great melody.. couldve been appropriate Song of the Year. | Reviewer: norel | 11/14/07

From the title alone, couldn't help to imagine it could have been a perfect soundtrack for the movie "Sleepless in Seattle"...btw, This song is impressively amazing! the lyrics are so damn real, and although I couldnt quite relate to it coz iv never been into such situation but the song makes me feel Im so connected. Its the melody that catches my interest everytime I listen to it. There are notes though that seemed falling from the usual sway but never go out of tune, which makes it unique and sound as if the lines are rather tunefully spoken (John Mayers voice actually make it sound like a whisper). So cool and simple, pretty much like no modulation at all. Just so damn good. I love the song, no doubt about it. The likes of "Not Myself", "Great Indoors", "Homelife" and this, "Split Screen Sadness" are just the kind of music that will never fade away in time. I would always love to hear these over and over...oh yes there are songs that lasts in a long long time. Thanks John Mayer, you're the man!

Just right.. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/10/07

This is an amzing song. I love it. It makes me think about my best friend how she's srowing away from me and kind of blows me off cause of her new boyfriend. I think this is the best song on that album, and close to his top songs of all of them. Yeah, he's talking about how he closed thier relationship and wants her back. Alot of people go through this. Great jon John Mayer. Keep it up.

Meh, John Mayer. | Reviewer: DC | 10/1/07

Yet another beautiful song by one of the best lyricists, guitarists, and singers I have ever heard. This song is definitely one of my favorite pieces he has recorded. However stop obsessing over him he is a great person, but he is a womanizer and nails groupies, just like most assholes.

Great tune | Reviewer: bob | 9/12/07

I think this song has to do with yearning for someone's presence even after you have broken up with them. "it stings when its nobody's fault". "split screen sadness" makes me think of a movie cliche where you see two people on opposite sides of a split screen wondering about the other person. "i know it was me who called this over" shows that he has broken up with this person.

I also think that this was written about one of those "its not you, its me" situations. "Cause I can’t wait to figure out what’s wrong with me
So I can say 'this is the way that I used to be" also makes me think that. He knows he hasn't improved himself, but he selfishly wants to be back w/ whomever.

Agree? Disagree?

just touching | Reviewer: anonymous | 8/1/07

my favorite part is :And I know it was me who called it over but I still wish you'd fought me ‘til Your dying day Don’t let me get away. i think the song could definitely be about a long distance relationship, but i right now im pretty much losing a close friendship so thats how i relate to it. especially because i moved so im pretty far away and yeah. wow its just a beautiful song.

a song for two | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/1/07

i hear this song and i get mixed emotions about it. the song is so bittersweet. it is so well written and filled with melancholy. it makes me think of a relationship i currently have with a person who is scared and doesn't trust many people, and i wonder if he'd dedicate this song.

Cause I can’t wait to figure out what’s wrong with me
So I can say 'this is the way that I used to be...

And I know it was me who called it over but
I still wish you'd fought me ‘til Your dying day
Don’t let me get away

i'd dedicate parts of it to him...

"All you need is love" is a lie 'cause
We had a love but we still said goodbye...

And it stings when it nobody’s fault...

I called because I just
Need to feel you on the line

John Mayers lyrics are truthful and beautiful. It's rare in this day of "POP" to hear lyrics which mean something. How difficult it is to have a relationship with somebody who is not there on a daily basis. He writes about this, in his lyric for this song beautifully. So many crazy thoughts that take over the mind, but we all go through it. "Maybe I'll sleep inside my coat"....how many of us have not felt that way. "I just want to feel you on the line..." Music like this is about relating, and connecting with the small world around us. If only we could say, what we really want to say, to those who we feel for. Lets all try, and take a chance. "It's alright".
