This song is about the flourishing Asbury Park music scene, which Bruce Springsteen is the most famous product of. (As a matter of fact, he was a buddy of Southside's.) Soul is a key influence, and many musicians were influenced by music they heard as a child. The town ell on hard times, but is being restored. The Upstage Club is a famous and important restaurant/club for musicians in the area.

Possibly the only recording of Southside Johnny, Bruce Springsteen and Steve Van Zandt singing together, and a terrific song to boot. Not sure they sing "laughed together" though. It always sounded like "played together" to me, which makes more sense.
