Reviews about El Oso
The Best Group You've Never Heard | Reviewer: Devil Doll | 7/18/2004
OK, so maybe you caught "Circles" in the 90's with the rest of us, but Soul Coughing is perhaps one of the greatest largely unknown bands ever. I believe my friends get sick of my endless ravings about this group, and El Oso is their finest achievement. I simply never tire of this album.
If you are not familiar with SC, prepare to hear something very different. Moreso than songs, their music is an amazing concoction of texture, rhythm, & sound.
If you look at the lyrics, they are far more poetry than traditional lyrics. (no surprise - Doughty is a poet) Not so much telling a story outright, but seemingly being said as much for the way the words sound coming out of the mouth and the imagery they elicit.
There is a tremendous synergy of the members of this band, and it is a real shame that they are no longer together. From the droning of Doughty's voice, to the asymmetrical drum rhythms, to the psychadelic synth work, to the driving bass, to the simple guitar amidst it all, they all come together and create this wonderfully playful, yet alluringly complex music.
I don't know if they are for everyone - there is not a pop bone in their bodies! This music draws you in and grabs hold of your brain. This is no Avril or Britney pop-glop. There is a great deal of dissonance with Doughty's voice giving a droning quality to it all, and you could sprain something trying to dance to some of the off-beat rhythms they display!
So no great love ballads or power rock here - just thoughtful intricate tone poems, if you will. Seek this music out and listen for yourself! You will be mesmerized if your brain can handle all that SC throws at you!
SC is a wonderfully rich musical experience that I can't recommend enough. Listen to it over and over again until it permeates your skin.
