Review The Song (27)Print the Lyrics
Well a man come on the 6 o'clock news
Said somebody's been shot, somebody's been abused
Somebody blew up a building
Somebody stole a car
Somebody got away
Somebody didn't get too far yeah
They didn't get too far

Grandpappy told my pappy, back in my day, son
A man had to answer for the wicked that he done
Take all the rope in Texas
Find a tall oak tree, round up all of them bad boys
Hang them high in the street for all the people to see that

(Chorus)
Justice is the one thing you should always find
You got to saddle up your boys
You got to draw a hard line
When the gun smoke settles we'll sing a victory tune
We'll all meet back at the local saloon
We'll raise up our glasses against evil forces
Singing whiskey for my men, beer for my horses

We got too many gangsters doing dirty deeds
We've got too much corruption, too much crime in the streets
It's time the long arm of the law put a few more in the ground
Send 'em all to their maker and he'll settle 'em down
You can bet he'll set 'em down 'cause

(Chorus x2)

Review about Beer for My Horses

Liberal Absurdity | Reviewer: Greg | 12/6/09

After listening to this great song I decided to scroll down to see what my fellow Toby Keith fans thought of it. I was beyond disappointed to read some of the comments that were clearly coming out of the mouths of this country's spineless Liberal community. Since some of you appear a little slow, allow me to clarify. I am not suggesting all Liberals are spineless rather that a portion of the Liberal community is without spines.
This song is about a failing Judicial system, one in which murders, child molesters, rapists, and other violent criminals are set free into the community to continue to harm the innocent people around them. Our founding fathers would have very much agreed with every lyric in this song. I am pro-death penalty. When someone takes the life of another without just cause they disserve to meet death as well. If you happen to be against it then that is your right and I respect that, but it's also your right not to listen to this song. Bringing racism into the equation is appalling. This is one of the Liberal community's biggest attacks. When something sounds a little off to them they find a way to throw racism into the equation. Lynching has been used since the BC time period, (BCE for you Liberals that oppose my Before Christ reference). This song does mention minorities however. Calm down Libbies, I'm not siding with you. Criminals are the minority in the song. No reference is made to race, gender, or class. Criminals in general are the minority and they should be punished to the full extent of the law.
Toby Keith is not trying to incite riots or convince people to lynch J-walkers. He is reminding Americans where we came from. Our Nation was founded on certain principles and those principles have long since left us. The Framers would be livid if they were around today to see how weak we have become. Murderers serving 5 years in prison, child molesters serving 2, this is the appalling part. I am a proud American and I am tired of Liberals trying to indoctrinate everyone they come in contact with. I am 18 and a University student studying criminal justice. I DO believe in the right to a fair trial and the right to legal council, and the right to be judged by a jury of one's peers. What I DO NOT believe in is the Liberal Administration trying to infringe on other Constitutional Rights. The right to bear arms, and the in this case the right to free speech. But I digress.
Everyone that is upset by this song or "thinks" they hear some hidden racism, don't listen to it. You are the racist and it is the people like you that tear this Country apart. This is a wonderful song that talks about “Old School Justice” not as it should be but as it once was. I left my email address so if you wish to continue this pleasant little debate, feel free to email me.

Get the fuck out of here! | Reviewer: Chuck | 11/6/09

You kidding me, none of this is racist. You need to get a life, they never say anything about lynching blacks. They say it about criminals. Just in case you don't know long ago they hung everyone. Not just one race. So think before you speak and stop fucking being "Anonymous". If we still hung people today maybe criminals wouldn't be doing stupid shit anymore. They get away with too much while the innocent suffer. If we hung people or used more firing squads maybe people would think twice before doing stupid shit.

It's not literal, people | Reviewer: Sean | 9/10/09

okay, for all those not intelligent enough, or simply ignorant of what lyrics embody, this song is metaphorical. I know, I know: big word. I suppose if you aren't smart enough to figure out that the song is not suggesting we form drunken lynch mobs, you probably don't know what a metaphor is, either. The song is stating that justice has taken a back seat to the rights of the criminals. The innocent are paying, and the guilty are getting away with murder, sometimes literally. TK is not suggesting we all get together, get drunk off our collective asses, and become the vigilantes of the world, fair trials be damned. He is saying that we need to take control of the justice system back, make the guilty pay, and celebrate the victory of taking back our justice system from the criminals. If you truly believe this song is about race, you have a severe persecution complex and need a reality check. Inserting racism into places where it clearly does not exist (there's not a single mention of ANY race, nor any allusions to it in the entire song) is one of the biggest reasons that racism IS still such a big problem, and seriously detracts from people who really suffer at the hands of racism. Trotting out the "R" word is just a way of saying "I'm a victim of racism. Pity me. I can get away with anything because you're only targetting me because of my race." If you think everyone is targetting you because of your race, YOU are making race the issue, not everyone else. There's a word for that: paranoia. Get over yourself, you're not that special that everyone has a vast conspiracy against you. As another poster put it, if you don't like the song, don't listen to it.

I love this song | Reviewer: Sandy | 5/25/09

I grew up with the law and back then they were tough. But clear back when they had the hangins in the old days I would have loved to live in those times. The song says it all. They took care of the corruption and crime back then. Now a days they just pussy foot around it. We need justice for this country cause its going to hell in a hurry. The good people are being picked on for owning guns but the bad guy with the guns they are saying oh but he wouldn't do that. We need to get harder on the bad guys just like the song says. It's time the long arm of the law put a few more in the ground Send them to their maker and he'll settle'em down. Amen to that. We even need to straighten out the Senator who don't pay their taxes. Not putting them in the ground but behind bars with the rest of the crimminals. Amen to that. Great song Toby keep it up.

I love this song! | Reviewer: Amber | 5/19/09

This song is amazing yet still simplistic. I would love to hang a bunch of stupid fucks that think they can get away with what they have done, like you said, straighten your ass up or you will die! I like that it glorifies lynching, it sounds messed up but I would rather see a people dead hanging from a tree than another dead baby girl. And yes I would need some whiskey afterward. I hate living in a world where I have to be scared all the time.

Too bad it's not about lynching libs | Reviewer: Robert | 5/15/09

All you whining liberal-take-a-punk-to-lunch-bunch can go do the hoochy-coochy on your hankies for all I care.
Far as I'm concerned, we ought to hang every last rapist and murderer we can catch from telephone poles as a warning to others to straighten the fuck up and RESPECT other's rights.

It's not about race, it's about handing down a clearly defined and even more clearly understood penalty for ill deeds.
You libs got a problem with hanging folks, but you haven't said a word about having a problem with crimes against innocent folks.

Try to remember that when you get arse raped by a HIV infected crackhead--- cuz,, we don't want to hear one word about "justice" then.

lolololololololol srsly | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/24/09

This song loves to hate. | Reviewer: John | 10/7/08

Just to let anyone know, Toby Keith and Scotty Emerick DID write this song, while Keith and Willie Nelson performed it. This song is incredibly offensive because it directly glorifies and promotes alcohol abuse and lynching: quite possibly one of the BEST combinations any man has ever thought up. For anyone who tries to argue that this song is "race-free", just look at the history of lynching and how it has been tied to race, including murder of Latino, black, Jewish, interracial couples, or any hated group. This is based in fear, hatred, and an unsupported accusation. Sounds like witch trials to me. I'm shocked that any media outlet plays this song, especially where I first heard it on The Colbert Report. Again, this ideology of hatred comes from the minds of Toby Keith and Scotty Emerick, and Willie Nelson must not be excused for being coerced into singing this song. Toby Keith needs to start actually thinking and writing good songs rather than spewing hatred onto a page, adding a catchy little tune, and perpetuating the evils of the white supremacist social system that continues today through the roots of America's histories.

Get a life. | Reviewer: Beau | 4/22/09

If you don't like the song, don't fucking listen to it. Furthermore, yeah it is about lynching. Does he mention anything about races? No. Yes, I realize lynching has a history of dealing with racism but that doesn't mean Toby Keith is implying he's racist. Get the fuck over it you over-sensitive dumbasses.

all about justice | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/21/09

I very much agree with James. You have to think about the way things are done today. We have rapists and murderes getting out of a comfortable prison after 15 years or so and still being pitied. The rights of victims are considered less important than those of the offender. Just scan the news for a bit and you'll see people all over talking about the serious mental strain imposed on the offenders (not the victims, mind you) by the law suit alone, and how they too are deeply troubled by what has happened and are in need of therapy (paid for, of course, by the tax payer). We live in a world with a completely messed up legal attitude, and this is why this song has an incredible amount of truth in it and comes from a very justified anger at the way real criminals are handled these days and the complete disregard of the need for true justice and of the rights of victims, which should be infintitely more important than those of the comitter of the crime, but are treated with complete disregard and disrespect in this time. I can totally relate to this song and in some ways the people of the old west had it down much better than anyone today, because they at least were able to feel that it is unacceptable to have murderers and rapists running around free at any time.
Toby Keith is one of the few who see things clearly nowadays, and I wish there were more who shared his healthy attitude as opposed to the sick one common with us now.

Amazing | Reviewer: James | 3/17/09

Literally speaking, this song is about justice. True justice, not necessarily the type spoken of specifically in the song, but merely that his grandfather's generation used to do things that way, and when comparing that to today we have lax punishments. I think It also means that we should fight injustice ourselves, almost vigilante. Not vigilante in the normal, Deathwish style. But to be a good person.
