HOW SOON IS NOW ? Lyrics
Artist(Band):The Smiths
Review The Song (33)Print the Lyrics
I am the son
and the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
Of nothing in particular

You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way
I am Human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does

I am the son
and the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and the heir
Of nothing in particular

You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way
I am Human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does

There's a club, if you'd like to go
You could meet somebody who really loves you
So you go, and you stand on your own
And you leave on your own
And you go home
And you cry
And you want to die

When you say it's gonna happen now,
Well, when exactly do you mean?
See I've already waited too long
And all my hope is gone

I am Human And I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does

I really like this song... | Reviewer: Jura | 8/7/09

and I always thought that it was about loneliness and fears that do not let you to live the way the other people do. it's strange for me to read that this is about gay people. I think that it doesn't really matter who consider himself as a main hero of this song. almost anyone can feel something like this.

Great Song | Reviewer: Matt | 7/12/09

The song ain't about being gay, politics or God - to me, it's about crippling shyness that holds you back from showing your true self. I completely relate to this song - despite having many friends and going out sometimes, it's something I get frustrated with and obviously Morrissey feels the same way.

loneliness | Reviewer: anddresss | 6/17/09

i think this song is about loneliness. its kinda obvious. and how shyness and our own faults stop us from letting people see how special we really are. and how frustrating it can get when you cant find somebody and how horrible that is.

its just good | Reviewer: Adolfo | 5/1/09

its a very good song. i don't know all the history behind morrisey. i just know ppl are diffrent and everyone will interpret songs diffrently. hence many ppl following many diffrent religions.

just try not to think to hard and if you like the song.... then you like it, thats it.....

You just haven't earned it yet baby | Reviewer: Stephen | 4/16/09

It's great reading all this debate about The Smiths. I do wish people could see beyond the stereotypes, I'm a working class Northern English kid grown up to be a middle class commuter belt Londoner, and spent a month last year in Florida. Believe me it takes all sorts on both sides of the pond. The differences are interesting not annoying.

I love all of The Smiths stuff, and can carry out whole conversations in snatches of their lyrics. So can lots of people around my age (48). To me Morrissey often introduces ambiguity into his lyrics - often by subtly changing the odd word in a rhyme, or sometimes saying a word that rhymes with one he doesn't say, in order to plant in the mind an idea that he hasn't actually discussed. In this way the songs become open to multiple interpretations - and I feel that this is deliberate.

I think that the song is about all the things people have said and probably more, but the trick is to simultaneously take the lyrics as deep and meaningful, whilst just turning up the volume, dancing and realising it's just a song.

As E.M Forster observed - "Only Connect the power and the prose, and both shall be exalted"

simple as! | Reviewer: Keef | 4/11/09

This song is about the yearning for love, and the desire to be loved. As someone below has also mentioned, im surprised that no one has picked up the references to being gay. Shock ,horror, Morrissey is gay, and like a lot of young ppl in that situation, probably had a hard time coming to terms with what being gay meant. 'There's a club if you'd like to go'......... Back in then 80's being gay was not as acceptable as it is today. Coming out opened a young person up to abuse, ridicule and often violence. Many gay/confused peoples only chance at any kind of gay contact was via the one and probably only gay club in town, where more often or no they would go, on their own, be absolutely terrified at the prospect of being seen in a gay club, stand on their own, talk to no one then go home, ALONE. Simple as that! The song talks about his pain and not being able to find love......

Yet another intervention... | Reviewer: Poeticus | 3/15/09

APHEX Twin is completely right here. And for those who appear to be still fighting the "War of 1812," please understand that whether you are a "limey" or a "yank", working class or not, Manchester is an economically depressed (emphasis on "depressed") city and Morrissey is merely writing about what he knows. The loss of belonging, social akwardness and fear of rejection are difficult enough to take when you live in a sunny, beautiful place... But Manchester? Opressive steele-grey sky; even the brick and stone and mortar have taken on hues of grey... Imaging a creative mind being locked inside such a prison and you have Morrissey... And so as not to offend, I am an imigrant from Manchester living in Florida....

Its really very simple | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/13/09

I was watching roger waters on tv the other day and he said he had recently listened to the album dark side of the moon and his reaction to the lyrics was 'how did I ever get away with it' and described the lyrics as being very lower sixth i.e. childish in a 17 year old's way of being childish. Morrissey often expresses a feeling of little self worth and the lyrics 'i am the heir to nothing in particular' is merely a dry humored way of saying just that. Everything is just a set up for one of the most poignant lyrics of popular music, 'I am human and I need to be loved just like anybody else does' I am surprised that no one has talked about the feeling that many gay people have that they are just as normal as everyone else and need love just as everyone does, but the song itself speaks to every awkward person who cant find it regardless of sexual orientation.

Bloody great song | Reviewer: Taylor | 3/12/09

I definantly associate with this song as one about being an awkward person with little self esteem not fitting in with other crowds, being an outcast.
Everybody has there own interpretations that all make sense
and i definantly don't appreciate the bloody britts mocking americans,
obviously you are not well cultured and don't know a thing about the american lifestyle, you probably think we all listen to country music and love football, but if i based my opinion of the britts on all that i've heard of them, i would say you all have rotten teeth, drink tea constantly, are arrogant and pompous jerks, and are cool (because of the sex pistols).
