Review The Song (12)Print the Lyrics
Shyness is nice and
Shyness can stop you
From doing all the things in life
You'd like to

Shyness is nice and
Shyness can stop you
From doing all the things in life
You'd like to

So, if there's something you'd like to try
If there's something you'd like to try
Ask me I wont say no, how could I?

Kindness is nice, and
Kindness can stop you
From saying all the things in
Life you'd like to

So, if there's something you'd like to try
If there's something you'd like to try
Ask me I wont say no, how could I?

Spending warm Summer days indoors
Writing frightening verse
To a buck-toothed girl in Luxembourg

Ask me, ask me, ask me
Ask me, ask me, ask me

Because if it's not Love
Then it's the bond, the bond, the bond,
the bond, the bond, the bond, the bond
That will bring us together

Nature is a language - can't you read ?
Nature is a language - can't you read ?

So, ask me, ask me, ask me,
Ask me, ask me, ask me

Because if it's not Love
Then it's the bond, the bond, the bond,
the bond, the bond, the bond, the bond
That will bring us together

If it's not Love
Then it's the bond
Then it's the bond
That will bring us together

So, ask me, ask me, ask me,
Ask me, ask me, ask me
Oh, la...

Review about ASK

Is anyone here serious? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/15/09

I don't believe you people got so far with trying to analyze this song. There's no bomb, and no world war metaphors. The song is quite simple. He sings about people's way of missing life because of fears, and about truth and identification of one to another are the way to bring two together. He just wants to help someone by opening him up.
Oh and the Luxembourg girl is just a joke about compromise for what finds you when you're shy...

ASK ME | Reviewer: Allen | 8/12/08

yes the nuclear threat is there in the song but to me as a 35 year old morrissey fan lol it means ......when he should of been out doing the things he wanted to he was to shy so he just stayed in a wrote (as we no he did) the pen pal i recon must of been a new your dolls fan that wrote to him. The bomb was going to kill most of us so were she came from dont have much importance, and to say she was buck teethed in my book says he didnt fancy here at all he would of rather been out with a nice young man than in doors on hot summers days writing! he was waiting for the right person to ask him something he was to scared to ask like,a date with a charming man!!!!!! good or bad love or hate we come together in some form so that was just common sence!

THE bomb | Reviewer: Gabriel | 6/21/08

Definitely THE bomb, not A bomb or the bombS, means the ATOMIC bomb. And yes, it may well be a cold war metaphor. By the way, it would be a playful and ironic punchline ("girlfriend in a coma"?). I think that what it says is: "Ask me (...) because if it's not love, then it's the bomb [that would be WW3] that will get us together", I guess. (meaning: the answer is "a priori" yes; it may be love, it may not, there is nothing to lose).

SHY BOY AND THE BUCKTOOTHED GIRL | Reviewer: kistenmacher | 5/28/08

In my understanding the song is about a shy boy who dosent have the guts to tell a bucktoothed girl he loves her. The girl loves him too ''ask me i wont say no'' (but he dosent know).
So if they dont get together because of their love (in case the guy dosent say to the girl he loves her) they'll get together anyway cause the bomb will kill them both...

sooo | Reviewer: kali | 3/28/08

so i dont think it's ironic at all AND it is actually very revelationish.
because when he say's ask me i wont say no how could i, i believe he sang together with love and that it probably meant for you to ask love for the help.

Not really | Reviewer: Kate | 1/15/08

Coyness and shyness are quite similar in meaning. Although coyness suggests a sense of complicity, which might be where you get the slyness idea from, but they're not synonyms.

I'm not sure either, about the not returning the sentiment; I don't think it's the narrator not returning the sentiment because of the line 'ask me i won't say no, how could i?'

I think it's arguably more to do with the fact that trying is more important and 'if it's not love' just refers to feelings existing but it not being love!

I think, as ever with Moz, this song is heavily ironic in any case.. but I think my reading stands.

Bless! | Reviewer: Mark | 1/15/08

Bless you, you young people! This is a song from Long Ago when we were all under the threat of nuclear war, and all teenagers were convinced we'd all be dead before our twenties. What Moz was singing about was the usual worry from that time - if the subject of the song doesn't go out with him, they'll both be killed by nuclear bombs anyway!

Hmm... | Reviewer: Jack | 11/16/07

It is 'bomb'. What Morrisey means is, that even if you ask him out, and he doesn't return the sentiment (if it's not love), then the 'bomb' (meaning the question: do you love me) will bring them closer, perhaps in friendship.

Coyness is not shyness. More akin to 'slyness'. yeah?

BOMB and COYNESS | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/9/07

Its bomb, bond wouldnt make any sense to me, honestly! and coyness is just another word for shyness, isnt it?

ask | Reviewer: paddy | 10/24/07

it say the bond not bomb and it says kindness not coyness i dont even no what coyness is but im pretty sure its kindness but it sounds like coyness because of his accent
