Song For A Winter's Night Lyrics
Performed by Gordon LightfootReview The Song (9)
The lamp is burnin' low upon my table top
The snow is softly falling
The air is still in the silence of my room
I hear your voice softly calling
If I could only have you near
To breathe a sigh or two
I would be happy just to hold the hands I love
On this winter night with you
The smoke is rising in the shadows overhead
My glass is almost empty
I read again between the lines upon each page
The words of love you sent me
If I could know within my heart
That you were lonely too
I would be happy just to hold the hands I love
On this winter night with you
The fire is dying now, my lamp is growing dim
The shades of night are lifting
The morning light steals across my window pane
Where webs of snow are drifting
If I could only have you near
To breathe a sigh or two
I would be happy just to hold the hands I love
On this winter night with you
And to be once again with you

Gord and Sarah | Reviewer: Dave | 12/31/11
I had forgotten this incredible song from my younger days. When I heard Sarah McLoughlan's version of it I was blown away. Then I went back to Gordon Lightfoot's version of it and it brought tears to my eyes. It's extraordinary to have two beautiful versions of an amazing song but you have to give it to Lightfoot for it's pureness and artistry, and let's not forget that he wrote it. One of a few modern day genius songwriters.
Forever a True Legend | Reviewer: Jeff Perry | 12/17/11
Gordon Lightfoot is unquestionably one of the greatest songwriters/artists folk music has to its credit. Listen to his music on a cold, cloudy November day and your soul with thank you for it!!! He is a priceless treasure that is thankfully part our musical heritage, and will forever be loved in the hearts of many.
Ahh Gordon! | Reviewer: Lila | 11/27/11
I Love Gordon! I hate the Fact that Sarah is getting credit for this song! She may be awesome, but she has nothing on Mr. Lightfoot! I know that he is Canadian, but his music reminds me so much of summer in northern Michigan where I grew up! I am so thankful for true artist like Gordon Lightfoot! The crap out there today is depressing.
Gordon Lightfoot...a Canadian Classic! | Reviewer: Brian Bastedo | 12/20/10
Gordon Lightfoot was riding a wave of popularity in the years I was in my late teens to early 20's, when there was stiff competition in the Top 40's pop music scene. All those old Lightfoot songs are true classics today. I went to see him perform them about 7 years ago in Edmonton and could not believe how well he still performs them!
Harry Belafonte's version | Reviewer: HH | 5/25/09
I recently watched a 1968 Smother's Brothers Season 3 DVD (the controversial episode 202) that had Harry Belafonte singing this song. I thought it was so great and had never heard of the song before hearing him sing it. I think his rendition is so compelling and beautiful.
Song for a Winter's Night in Sault Ste-Marie, Ontario | Reviewer: Carmen Bertrand | 4/19/09
I just saw Gordon Lightfoot in Sault Ste-Marie, Ontario, and he chose this song as his encore. Like many others, I thought this was Sarah M's song until I saw it one of Lightfoot's albums a few months ago. What a privilege to hear it from the original artist!! The lyrics are so meaningful and I have added "Song For A Winter's Night" to my list of favourites.
Fantastic | Reviewer: Danny F | 2/21/08
As Anonymous pointed out the problems with "true Identity" or origins of artists can be an issue as I always thought Lightfoot was American until I looked at his bio. That said, this shouldn't distract from the fact that his origins don't matter, it's the music that's important and this song is fantastic.
Also check out other's such as Rich Man's Spiritual, Steel Rail Blues and Walls. All funky songs however there is just too many great ones to list.
Timeless song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/13/07
I have been an avid admirer of this gentle man's work for most of my over 40 years on this planet! I grew up with this distinctly Canadian voice being a part of my daily musical experience...you could not have grown up in Canada in the 70's and NOT have heard of this guineus!
This song reminds me of winter's nights on the farm in Ontario..sleigh bells and all!
Wonderful to have another Canadian make her own classic out of it...Sarah M of course!
Unfortunatley I am worried we as Canadians are "exporting" all our greats to the US..and that their true identity often gets "muddied" in American production styles!
Beautiful music | Reviewer: Jim Bottom | 12/28/06
I am a long time admirer of Lightfoot and his wonderful tales in music. But, I had never heard this song until Sarah McLachlin produced it for her "Wintersong" album. It is a beautiful, touching song, in true Lightfoot form. Nice job Sarah; beautiful music, Gordon.
