Underneath the bridge
The tarp has sprung a leak
And the animals I've trapped
Have all become my pets
And I'm living off of grass
And the drippings from my ceiling
It's okay to eat fish
'Cause they don't have any feelings
(x3)
Something in the way, mmm
Something in the way, yeah, mmm
Underneath the bridge
The tarp has sprung a leak
And the animals I've trapped
Have all become my pets
And I'm living off of grass
And the drippings from my ceiling
It's okay to eat fish
'Cause they don't have any feelings
(x4)
Something in the way, mmm
Something in the way, yeah, mmm

Review about Something In The Way this is the best song; kurt cobain is a ledgend; and the best ever! | Reviewer: Brittany | 11/4/09
i love narvana;; and kurt; this song and many more are fantastic; (: these lyrics do make sence; mabe if you were not so close minded you would see that; this song ''somthing in the way'' happens to be one of my favoret songs; (: so dont judge the song just listen; and chill out(: and remeber Kurt Cobain it the best and super alsome(:
most of kurts songs dont make any sence, to me this song reminds me of a bad dream, or a bad time in my life where i was depressed. we cant tell if this was a metephore for his childhood or if it has something to do with it, or maybe it was just a "filler", but anyways, anyone could relate this song to something
under the bridge... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/7/09
I am from Aberdeen, WA. The place of the bridge that Kurt Cobain allegedly stayed under, or whatever. There, we have a memorial under the bridge for him, and a sign next to it with the lyrics of this song. He grew up here, and let me tell you, it;s not the happiest place. A constant, light rainfall follows us all day, almost everyday for a good nine months out of the year. Always a thick grey blanket of clouds hovers above our heads, bringing with it a state of depression, for some. Living here, growing up here, sharing the same "stoming grounds" so to speak gave me quite the perspective. Whether he actually stayed under the bridge or hung out there, i don;t know. But it the song is pretty catchy, i guess. And from what i know from the people around here that actually knew the guy, he was pretty pissed off. I'm thinking that it probably had nothing to do with the world, but the ignorant people that walked it. Like you and me. I share his hatred for it here. And i hate that everyone tries to get on a personal level and figure him out. The reason there are so many mysterious questions about him and his music is because he wanted it that way. He didn;t want to get personal with anyone, he just wanted to make music. And most of his music doesn;t make sense because he didn;t. He never wanted us to really know him. I mean, fuck, i;m pretty sure he said FUCK ALL OF YOU for a reason. He hated us. and i;m sure if you would have known the guy, you would have hated him, too lol. Look, listen to his music, enjoy it. It;s really the only good thing he left behind when he peaced the fuck out of this world and left it for the rest of us to live and breed in, all fucked up, in our own shit. But don;t try to hard to analyze it. Chances are, you;re probably wrong :)
Real meaning of the Song Title | Reviewer: Christina | 7/13/09
The lyrics and title "Something in the Way" came from Kurt Cobain's favorite song by The Beatles, "Something."
The opening lyric in George Harrison's "Something" begins as "Something in the way she moves/ attracts me like no other lover." Harrison admitted that the second half of the lyric ("attracts me like no other lover") was just added in as "filler" until he came up with the lyrics later. Harrison ended up leaving the lyric in.
Similarly, Cobain, who created music first and write lyrics later, implemented the phrase "Something in the Way" as "filler" which came to mind because it was his favorite Beatles song. Just like Harrison, his "filler" lyric was never changed.
Cobain would cover The Beatles' "Something" whenever Nirvana was experiencing technical problems as a "filler" until the rest of his band's technical problems were fixed.
Response to knowing Kurt | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/13/09
Of coarse we feel we know Kurt, at least partially. Creating the mood, the energy, the music, the lyrics, an artist gives a little piece of himself to the rest of the world. But yes, i agree this song may have meant something different to Nirvana, but free interpretation is always a way to go.

I forget which person said he came up with lyrics last but he did. a lot of stuff he just wrote at the last minute, but even so lyrics have so come from somewhere and be inspired by something. I think he's saying he feels like something is preventing him from what could be or could have been considering how depressed he was, it makes sense.

Everybody talks about what Kurt was writing about as if they actually knew him or something. First of all its hard to tell what he was actually writing about (he never lived under that bridge that everyone thinks he lived under) and second, lyrics are meant to be interpreted in whatever way means the most to you.
Kurt himself has stated lyrics come last, So honestly this could mean anything but in my opinion its about a few things. First off, he lived in a few friends houses when he moved out and this could be somewhat like this even though i don't think he lived under any bridges and if so, not for more then a day. The Its okay to eat fish cuz they don't have any feelings could reference to people with mental illnesses such as Bipolar/Schizophrenia And ofcourse the hated pyschopaths because they are so different, people often confuse them with assholes, or just cold blooded murders blah blah. Sucks no one understands anything anymore =/.
really depressing | Reviewer: Adna | 5/21/09
This is my favorite Nirvana song but it can make cry.Once I when I was at my grandma's house and I watched Memorable moments on MTV.They were talking about lots of it but then they started talking about Kurt's death and I cried. My cousin hugged me and said that we can't change anything.
this is a metaphor alienation Kurt felt from his parents, i think. he might as well have been living under a bridge. it has nothing to do with being famous, because Nirvana wasn't famous until after this album.
