Something's Missing Lyrics
Performed by John MayerReview The Song (18)
I'm not alone, I wish I was.
Cause then I'd know, I was down because
I couldn't find, a friend around
To love me like, they do right now.
They do right now.
I'm dizzy from the shopping malls
I searched for joy, but I bought it all
It doesn't help the hunger pains
and a thirst I'd have to drown first to ever satiate
Something's missing
And I don't know how to fix it
something's missing
And I don't know what it is
At all
When autumn comes, it doesnt ask.
It just walks in, where it left you last.
And you never know, when it starts
Until there's fog inside the glass around your summer heart:
Something's missing
And I don't know how to fix it
something's missing
And I don't know what it is
At all
I can't be sure that this state of mind, is not of my own design
I wish there was an over the counter test, for loneliness.
For loneliness like this.
Something's missing
And I don't know how to fix it
Something's missing
And I don't know what it is
No I don't know what it is
Something's different
And i don't know what it is
No I don't know what it is

Realistjmfan, thats really an interesting way to look at it. But I dont subscribe to your idea. He used opposite sex so that it may cater to all. Batteries because everything that is powered by batteries run only for a certain period of thime and thus temporary. LOL its not about vibrators.
An Opinion | Reviewer: Yoga | 1/9/12
I've followed John since 2002. He's a great songwriter and singer. Something's missing is about something has yet to be found just like I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For by U2 :)
Yet another opinion | Reviewer: MRG | 10/25/11
English isn't my mother tongue, it's strange how sometimes some song get into my head, it's like my brain wants the song before I can fully understand the song. This song did it, in my case I'm already a believer and the Father is already for me whenever I need Him (at least this is what I believe), so for me this song has just one mean: Friendship, friends I had, and lost along my whole life. Somethings missing, for me its quite clear, its a friend to trust in.
Like him, every thing else is checked, and usually the things I think I need, comes with batteries.
So sad people around the world face alone exactly the same problems...
OPPOSITE SEX CHECK? | Reviewer: realistjmfan | 6/10/11
it's a little strange he used OPPOSITE SEX instead of the plain word WOMAN. He may be hinting a clue there. Why did he say everything he needs need batteries? Because he's been using vibrators instead of the real thing he really needs. OPPOSITE SEX CHECK, but SAME SEX no. The one thing he needs that doesn't need battery is a real cock.
What's missing is he can't seem to accept what he really is
real love | Reviewer: monica | 6/2/11
I think the meaning is that sometimes having someone is not enough, if it's not real soul-mate, being with that person does not kill inner feeling of emptiness and lonelinesss, just as money, friendships etc...
John is missing Meaning and Purpose in his Life | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/19/11
My interpretation of this song is that he's trying to portray that melancholic feeling of loneliness or emptiness if you will that comes from a inner search of happiness and meaning in life. It has nothing to do with money and material things cause all the "desireable" things that JM listed: Money, time, health, friendship etc are outer worldly things and can come and gone in a flash, they are not going to give your life meaning and purpose, you can not be fullfilled by these. I bet he is searching for that missing link in this life that ties everything together.
The song says he already has love. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/18/11
It's right there in the first stanza. It's definitely a spiritual connection that's missing. It may not be the intended message of John Mayer, but God is definitely what he's craving. Plus, God isn't a crutch- He's a lifestyle. I'm smart, creative, witty, dare I say attractive, and even upper middle class, but I still love Him with all my heart and I'd give all that up for someone like you to see that.
God = Love | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/15/11
Think about, God is Love. You may not want to admit it, and JM may not realize it, but God is what is missing. And tell me, what is wrong with having God as a crutch when reality gets too much. It beats drugs and doesn't cost anything.
JM=Poetic GOD | Reviewer: Mattie | 11/10/10
Maybe its that feeling you get when the seasons transitions from summer to fall? He says he has love, friendship wise and romantic wise. But he also mentions how autumn comes in without an invite and blocks what summer used to be. You know that odd, cringe-worthy feeling you get when it starts to be fall? I don't know, that's what I saw out of it. Very poetic, and a beautiful song. I love JM's work!
i feel this | Reviewer: me | 10/29/10
dont kill me but this reminds me of britney's lucky. they have "everything" but they're still not happy because they're missing something. most likely love and happiness, proof that money can't buy either of those.
This is definitely not about god, anyone with half a brain know that is just a bunch of hubbub. god is a crutch for people who can't face their reality
THE ACTUAL MEANING OF THE SONG | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/26/10
actually people, not going to say that God isn't a bad thing for people, but the song is about when something you think of gets you in a bad mood. then later, you forget what put you in the bad mood in the first place and you try to remember what it was and then suddenly, somethings missing...
I'll tell you what's missing... | Reviewer: ja | 10/9/10
God is what is missing. It's the last thing people want to hear when they're looking for something because it's not physically attainable, ...but really just try talking to God (aka praying), ..little by little you will begin to be amazed.
it's not god he's missing | Reviewer: Anna | 9/5/10
are you kidding? of course it's not God he's missing. He's missing love, like an anonymous said. C'mon, seriously, God? ah ah, you make me laugh. Not everybody needs to believe in God to be happy, but we do need to have someone next to us, whether is a friend or a life partner. Wake up.
I love John and i totally relate to this song ;D
love's missing | Reviewer: wayne | 6/11/10
Yeah, I think its love that he is missing. When you listen to Bold as love (live) on Where the light is, John states that he has tried every approach(like buying stuff, etc.)except love. However, the lyrics are subjective and could mean something else.
Missing God? Oh please. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/1/10
You idiots. He's missing love. Honest simple love. Not just romantic love, but platonic love as well. Somebody to call an honest friend, companionship without a hint of other motives.
Not your God.
