Someone Saved My Life Tonight Lyrics - Elton John

Review The Song (6)

Music by Elton John
Lyrics by Bernie Taupin

When I think of those East End lights, muggy nights
The curtains drawn in the little room downstairs
Prima Donna lord you really should have been there
Sitting like a princess perched in her electric chair
And it's one more beer and I don't hear you anymore
We've all gone crazy lately
My friends out there rolling round the basement floor

And someone saved my life tonight sugar bear
You almost had your hooks in me didn't you dear
You nearly had me roped and tied
Altar-bound, hypnotized
Sweet freedom whispered in my ear
You're a butterfly
And butterflies are free to fly
Fly away, high away, bye bye

I never realised the passing hours of evening showers
A slip noose hanging in my darkest dreams
I'm strangled by your haunted social scene
Just a pawn out-played by a dominating queen
It's four o'clock in the morning
Damn it listen to me good
I'm sleeping with myself tonight
Saved in time, thank God my music's still alive

Chorus

And I would have walked head on into the deep end of the river
Clinging to your stocks and bonds
Paying your H.P. demands forever
They're coming in the morning with a truck to take me home
Someone saved my life tonight, someone saved my life tonight
Someone saved my life tonight, someone saved my life tonight
Someone saved my life tonight
So save your strength and run the field you play alone

...And WRITTEN by Bernie Taupin | Reviewer: Bill Beck | 9/21/11

John and Taupin are my favorite song writer and lyricist combination of all time. I love this song. I love singing it, and I especially love hearing it. Elton is brilliant, clearly. But the hero of this work of art of Bernie Taupin. Think about this song when you hear it. Your mind is filled with elaborate images "muggy nights, curtains drawn in the little room downstairs..." Don't you imagine the color of the curtains? Don't you imagine the texture? Red velvet perhaps. "Sitting like a princess perched in her electric chair..." The images are rich. Brilliant. You can almost smell the food on the oak table and taste the thick, heavy air. Bernie Taupin's lyrics are a feast for the mind's eye. The song goes from image to image, with brilliant changes in level by Elton John. Every time I hear, "so save your strength, and run the field you play alone...", I can see some English school boy in front of some castle of a private school on the pitch, in his football uniform as the camera pans away as if shot from a helicopter to demonstrate the child's isolation. As I understand the song, it had to do with some former female fiancé of John's who towered over him in height, "and stunted by your haunted social scene. Just a pawn outplayed by a dominating queen..." As I understand it, John was headed for marriage to this woman, and the relationship was ended, thus saving his life. "Slip-noose hanging in my darkest dreams..." Brilliantly sung, and most brilliantly written.

This song is medicine for my soul | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/27/10

Every time I listen to this song it's like therapy for me. Beautiful untouchable greatness. The lyrics are truly amazing. My parents are divorced, yet I have such a warm and wonderful memory of being a child and watching them listening to this song as if it was their love ballad. I will hold on to that forever. Listening to this song never fails to bring me back to my childhood, remembering how much love they once had for one another. Now as an adult, the lyrics take on a whole new meaning for me as well. I struggle with mental illness and for some reason my soul can literally feel every word of this song as both comforting because it's like someone actually understands the pain and struggle I go through, yet they keep on going. Almost being defeated while at the same time having enough strength and sense to pull out of what seems to be a toxic situation. This song inspires me to no end and is truly one of the most beautiful and powerful songs I have ever come across.

My Only Favorite Elton John Song | Reviewer: Priscilla | 10/15/08

Words cannot describe this song, and the way I feel when I play it repeatedly. All I know is, that since its inception, I fell in love with it, and it has a special place in my vast music collection. As I grow older, almost 60yrs. now, this some remains in my heart, in my youth, in a very special place in my life.

Music is my sanity, and this song - Someone Save My Live Tonight, and Jimi Hendrix's entire Band of Gypsies album are classics for eternity that cannot be remade no matter who sings them........it's impossible to bring that feeling, that music, that vibe, that "humph" into what a song requires. It's just impossible!!

Elton''s best song ever | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/29/07

This song is emotionally charged and dark, but it's put together so well (no guitar) and the lyrics are so deep. A time in the height of Elton's career reflecting on a attempted suicide attempt 6 years before a marriage that would have put a stop to his career before it ever got going. Superb lyrics by his writer, Bernie, and nobetter song ever produced considering the hundreds of hits he had had in his career. This song is the pinnacle of Elton John, no questions asked!!!

I never knew this song existed before i heard it on American Idol, when Latoya London sang it. I loved it from the moment she began until it ended. Its a nice song. On a scale from 1-10, i give it a 8.5!
