Somebody to Love Lyrics - Jefferson Airplane
Review The Song (26)
When the truth is found to be lies
and all the joy within you dies
don't you want somebody to love
don't you need somebody to love
wouldn't you love somebody to love
you better find somebody to love
When the garden flowers baby are dead yes
and your mind [, your mind] is [so] full of RED
don't you want somebody to love
don't you need somebody to love
wouldn't you love somebody to love
you better find somebody to love
your eyes, I say your eyes may look like his [yeah]
but in your head baby I'm afraid you don't know where it is
don't you want somebody to love
don't you need somebody to love
wouldn't you love somebody to love
you better find somebody to love
tears are running [ahhh, they're all] running down your breast
and your friends baby they treat you like a guest.
don't you want somebody to love
don't you need somebody to love
wouldn't you love somebody to love
you better find somebody to love
and all the joy within you dies
don't you want somebody to love
don't you need somebody to love
wouldn't you love somebody to love
you better find somebody to love
When the garden flowers baby are dead yes
and your mind [, your mind] is [so] full of RED
don't you want somebody to love
don't you need somebody to love
wouldn't you love somebody to love
you better find somebody to love
your eyes, I say your eyes may look like his [yeah]
but in your head baby I'm afraid you don't know where it is
don't you want somebody to love
don't you need somebody to love
wouldn't you love somebody to love
you better find somebody to love
tears are running [ahhh, they're all] running down your breast
and your friends baby they treat you like a guest.
don't you want somebody to love
don't you need somebody to love
wouldn't you love somebody to love
you better find somebody to love

This is NOT a pop song | Reviewer: I don't know | 4/30/13
When this song was written, America was in a devestating and pointless war. Many young people (ok young men) were sent and many either came back dead, didn't comeback at all (death, m.ia. or p.o.w. camps). Those who did come back didn't comeback to open arms nor did they comeback the same. ALIENATION, ANGER, DESPAIR, your friends treat like a guest. Your mind is full of RED. Sounds like a comment on peoples hatred for communism, or your head is so full of anger. The garden flowers are dead, many "flower children" were drafted into this war.
Takes away all the troubles | Reviewer: Lisa | 4/20/13
Grace is certainly a "Slick" chick. This song is like all great art. Cannot be replicated. One of those songs that you dont really even think too much about the lyric, the melody is so good and her raw untamed voice just makes you sing along at the top of your lungs. Takes me to another place. Such a gift in a world which just takes. Thank you Grace Slick.

Re: Anonymous 10/25/09
You have no experience to be talking about any of this, you are hypothesising like some kind of teen academic, and seem to be wanting, like a right-wing fundamentalist, to paint some kind of hellish picture of what were good, learning times, where we wanted to feel and touch reality, not the society-conditioned state of ego and isolation. Put yourself in the shoes of the singer instead.

You may be overthinking this a bit, people. It's a POP SONG, though a great one and something of an anthem for people my age (old). And who are these pups who insist on addressing this nonexistent person named "Jefferson"? A Jefferson Airplane was a matchbook cover folded in such a way as to hold a roach. No, not the insect, you punks. Iguess you had to be there...and even if you were, it's a bit of a blur......
Larger meaning | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/22/13
I don't think of this song as a break up song never have. "When the truth is found to be lies" resonates in my mind as an exsitential statement of the sham side of life, the crooked poliitician, the phony friends, the lies of life, hence the line "your friends treat you like a guest". I think the lyrics become much more powerful and meaningful when taken this way
RED or DREAD | Reviewer: Marsupilami | 10/17/12
I still believe it is DREAD, not RED, since song is about girl who is left by someone, and all of us who have experienced this process have had a phase of pure dread of everything, since we are the one that are left behind without any explanation we start to question everything.
RED | Reviewer: anonymous | 10/14/12
Just thinking about the era... Wondering if a mind full of RED might refer to disagreeing with government policies... people like Jane Fonda "Hanoi Jane"... thinking certainly part of the whole hippie scene of the time...
Treat you like a guest | Reviewer: Sig | 6/2/12
No, not "pest." When your "friends" treat you like a guest it means your "friends" want to keep you at a distance -- they aren't really your friends, and it's a bloody shame that even your friends don't like you very much.
Music | Reviewer: 2d worst lead guitarist of the 1960's | 5/8/12
To me, the most breathtaking part of listening to this song again after all these years is how perfectly Grace's voice and the lead guitar play off of each other in an acid -laced dance. That kind of musicality comes from somewhere very deep. It evokes it's era more effectively than a thousand -page novel . Anyone trying to understand the sixties could do worse than to start here.
Grace talking | Reviewer: Spike | 4/12/12
Grace is criticizing another (hypothetical) woman in this song, criticizing her for being obsessed with things other than what she really wants, which is love. Her life should be a flower garden, but the flowers are dead. Her mind is so full of BREAD (i.e. obsessed with money.) She lacks warmth to the point that her friends treat her like a guest rather than a chum. The most cryptic line is "Your eyes may look like his", but I always thought it meant that the other woman thought of herself as being suitable for a certain man, but really it was self-delusion.
This was my interpretation of the song since it first came out, and it fits perfectly with the Jefferson Airplane and what they were about.
Maybe It's Really DREAD (not "red)? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/23/12
A couple of things. The song was written by Darby Slick (Grace's brother-in-law at the time), not Grace herself. Also, I think it's "Your mind is so full of DREAD (not red)". That makes more sense to me. She knows that the guy dumped her for someone else, but doesn't really want to admit it to herself. She dreads the thought, but really knows that it's true....
I do hear "guest" and what not. | Reviewer: Shawn Lawrence | 2/3/12
I may not have been born in the era that this song was released in, but I've listened to it enough to hear the words in it. The whole argument about whether it's "pest" or "guest" is idiotic. If you listen closely to the song, you will hear "GUEST" and not "PEST." In case you're wondering, I am 18 years old, but I listen to songs that are not of my era, and I listen to them enough to hear the lyrics and understand them. First of all, I don't see the point in saying people of THIS age are ignorant to the music of the previous years. Second, I don't understand why everyone has to argue over little things like this, so shut up and enjoy the song for what it is, and that's all.
snide remark dude your an ass | Reviewer: julie | 12/5/10
you think you were a hippy but your a pretentious dick. the song isnt necessarily about being fake. the "you '' in the song is probably someone who kinda lost their mind. i thi9nk its about finding the truth on acid in the beginning . Why dont you listen to the lyrics in the whole song instead of just interpreting one line? the earlier lyrics are not about being fake and the last line is just about being DISTANT from your friends . havent you ever done acid and been so in your own head that you feel awkward? i have.or even sober been in your own head??
Correction needed. | Reviewer: Anonymous_Fan | 6/19/10
Not sure why it says certain things in brackets that dont need to be but i simply need to point out to whoever has the power to change this that it should be red, not bread!(dont know why bread is capitalized either). As said and explained by the post'Some of it is obvious, no?'. It should be RED, im certain, NOT BREAD.
Leave us alone. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/26/10
I agree with the people who say 'treat you like a guest' I have been listening to this song for longer than I can remember, pest is most definitely incorrect. However, you should bear in mind that, presented with a seemingly illogical word, it is perfectly logical to think of a suitable, and similar-sounding, word, to fill the gap. I am also one of the 'young kids these days', and feel that describing us in such derogatory terms may not be a good life move when you bear in mind who is paying for your pension.
