Solitary Shell Lyrics
Artist(Band):Dream Theater
Review The Song (9)Print the Lyrics
He seemed no different from the rest
Just a healthy normal boy
His mama always did her best
And he was daddy's pride and joy

He learned to walk and talk on time
But never cared much to be held
and steadily he would decline
Into his solitary shell

As a boy he was considered somewhat odd
Kept to himself most of the time
He would daydream in and out of his own world
but in every other way he was fine

He's a Monday morning lunatic
Disturbed from time to time
Lost within himself
In his solitary shell

A temporary catatonic
Madman on occasion
When will he break out
Of his solitary shell

He struggled to get through his day
He was helplessly behind
He poured himself onto the page
Writing for hours at a time

As a man he was a danger to himself
Fearful and sad most of the time
He was drifting in and out of sanity
But in every other way he was fine

He's a Monday morning lunatic
Disturbed from time to time
Lost within himself
In his solitary shell

A momentary maniac
With casual delusions
When will he be let out
Of his solitary shell

Review about Solitary Shell

About misconceptions | Reviewer: Fearful | 10/28/09

As I see, this song is about those people who are called 'hikikomori' in Japan (lit. 'acute social withdrawal'). It's totally about social disease, not personal.

Dream Theater don't picture any display of autism, and they made the song definitely cheerful. I'd rather say 'promising', meantime, it's the only song I like from Six Degrees...

An even more ironic reply | Reviewer: Takeshi | 7/8/09

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but opinions are usually wrong; in this case, MissCam's opinion is definitely wrong, and this is reinforced by DT themselves. There was no bias involved in my reply in the first place, and I presented my evidence perfectly fine. Go listen to Solsbury Hill and you'll start to understand a little: Go through the experience of living as an autistic and being treated as 'special' in mentality yet given a pseudo-positive outlook and you'll agree with me completely.

Thanks dummy! | Reviewer: Mark | 5/1/09

Really I don't get how someone can pin one subject on this song, I can pick out different meanings from just one line of the lyrics. You are being pretty bias if you think this song is not supposed to be cheerful. I don't even get the impression from hearing it, that it's about anything autistic. I'm not saying it isn't right, but I know that I have been able to picture myself as the person they are talking about, as well as other people I know, and none of us have ever been diagnosed with autism! Why isn't MissCam entitled to her opinion?

An ironic misconception | Reviewer: Takeshi | 1/2/09

Honestly, I doubt this song intends to be cheerful; it entails a boy diagnosed with autism and his struggle with reality. The tone used is quite similar to 'Solsbury hill' by Peter Gabriel, whom the band draw influence from, I'd assume, and really outlines the irony of the lyrics juxtaposed to the 'general outlook' of Solitary Shell as a song. I believe the band intentionally gave the song a vibe that would allow listeners to have a rosy conception, in order to replicate the current awareness of children (and adults) suffering from autism. In reality, these lyrics could just as easily fit to a rhythm similar to 'Goodnight Kiss' (which is a great song, mind you) because they aren't cheerful at all.

love it | Reviewer: MissCam | 10/22/08

I actually love the whole album I found this song on (greatest hit: and 21 other pretty cool songs---two discs!) , but I can relate to this song in more ways than one (save for the fact that it's about a guy). I love the music itself as well, it's so cheerful and I can just picture the man walking down the street along a coastline or something. It's intense and beautiful.

Its a great song | Reviewer: Cruzz | 10/25/08

GENIUS MASTERPIECE | Reviewer: Mr.T | 12/12/06

It just so happens my favourite band sings a song that describes my soul. Hello out there stranger. Yes you. If you feel the same way I do... That this song seems to nail your very existence for all to see... Gimmie a shout. I'm no loner, don't get me wrong. I'm just inspired, and I search for a possible companion to share the intimate details that this song proclaims. Who knows dear stranger, I may have your answers. If you are up to it, I am a huge Dream Theater fan, and would enjoy a letter from you. My addy is turboty14@hotmail.com. I'm serious; you know the feeling of a good song.
