Soldiers Lyrics - Abba

Review The Song (8)

Do I hear what I think I'm hearing?
Do I see the signs I think I see?
Or is this just a fantasy?
Is it true that the beast is waking
Stirring in his restless sleep tonight
In the pale moonlight
In the grip of this cold December
You and I have reason to remember

Chorus

Soldiers write the songs that soldiers sing
The songs that you and I don't sing
They blow their horns and march along
They drum their drums and look so strong
You'd think that nothing in the world was wrong
Soldiers write the songs that soldiers sing
The songs that you and I won't sing

Let's not look the other way
Taking a chance
'Cause if the bugler starts to play
We too must dance

What's that sound, what's that dreadful rumble?
Won't somebody tell me what I hear?
In the distance but drawing near
Is it only a storm approaching?
All that thunder and the blinding light
In the winter night
In the grip of this cold December
You and I have reason to remember

chorus
Soldiers write the songs that soldiers sing
The songs that you and I don't sing
They blow their horns and march along
They drum their drums and look so strong
You'd think that nothing in the world was wrong
Soldiers write the songs that soldiers sing
The songs that you and I won't sing
Let's not look the other way
Taking a chance
'Cause if the bugler starts to play
We too must dance

chorus
Soldiers write the songs that soldiers sing
The songs that you and I won't sing
Let's not look the other way
Taking a chance
'Cause if the bugler starts to play
We too must dance

Unique | Reviewer: FcoJ | 1/19/14

From my point of view it is a song very strange and unknown of ABBA, most people dont know this facet of ABBA and this is incredibly a pity. If people had appraised their last album better, maybe they would not split up and they would keep on making unique songs like that and they even would show new facets of them. Abba has some songs should have more appreciation. They did things most people could understand and now it is even worse.

Outstanding song | Reviewer: Fattir | 6/2/13

Ever since i was a kid till now i listen to the ABBA and i like all their songs they are very talented with everything, this song is very warmth and rhapsody in the same time something can't be compatible but ABBA success in mix them together. All i can say its outstanding song like the rest songs of ABBAs, yes we hate the wars but sometimes you need to fight to protect people from their self.

Not Once. | Reviewer: Femi | 3/18/13

Believe me, this is a song i can't listen to just once...i have to repeat it, always. The imagery carries you along, the underlying fear, you feel. You can almost feel the cold...beautifully executed i must say. So poignant.

A soldier | Reviewer: Mike | 1/10/12

I just found this song again and downloaded it. I listened to this long before I joined the military and wondered what this truly meant. Just words back then. I sing the songs now and shudder at the implications. It's a shame so few leaders know how and when to wield this power.

A touching song | Reviewer: Peter | 3/15/10

While listening to the song, and reading the corresponding lyrics, I think it's a beautiful song with a meaning that, to this day is still valid.
strong lyrics combined with beautiful singing make it a song to listen several times in a row and enjoy.

I think the best thing of ABBA's the fact that they talked about every kind of argument in their songs. This is the second song about the war, after Fernando, one of my favourites within the album "The visitors". It has a really deep meaning and a wonderful melody. And I keep on thinking that Frida's voice's incomparable.

Anti-war | Reviewer: irish | 7/31/07

The Visitors was realeased in the 1980s at a time when it seemed like the Warsaw Pact tanks could roll across the NATO borders at any time, KAL was shot down, Reagan and Thatcher were in power and Soviets ran the evil empire...dark days and I think the song catches the underlying fear that we were heading for a nuclear war.

Is a beautiful song | Reviewer: marvin morales | 4/17/07

In my opinion is one of the best songs incluided in "The Visitors", because it sounds different from the music that Abba did before and have a feeling of sad and darkness
