Smells Like Teen Spirit Lyrics - Nirvana

Review The Song (149)

Load up on guns,
Bring your friends
It's fun to lose and to pretend
She's overboard self assured
Oh no I know, a dirty word.

Hello, hello, hello, hello?
Hello, hello, hello, how low?
Hello, hello, how low, how low?
Hello, hello, hello.

With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
i feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulato!
An Albino!
A mosquito!

My libido!
Yay! Hey! Yay!

I'm worse at what I do best
And for this gift I feel blessed
Our little group has always been
And always will until the end

Hello, hello, hello, hello?
Hello, hello, hello, how low?
Hello, hello, how low, how low?
Hello, hello, hello.

With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulato!
An Albino!
A mosquito!
My libido!
Yay! Hey! Yay!

(Solo)

And I forget just why I taste -
Oh yeah, I guess it makes me smile
I found it hard, it was hard to find
Oh well, whatever, nevermind

Hello, hello, hello, hello?
Hello, hello, hello, how low?
Hello, hello, how low, how low?
Hello, hello, hello.

With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mullato!
An albino!
A mosquito!
My libido!

A denial!(x9)

The fact that people try to analyse art is a joke. They've completely missed the point. Nobody knows what it means not even Kurt. That's the point is to "Choose your own adventure." There's no right or wrong answer. The real fact is he was kind of lazy with lyrics because "Lyrics are secondary, Music comes first." Art is not meant to be broken down and dissected. Feelings are conveyed through music and expression. Not someone else's opinion. Stop trying and just listen. As a musician I as well get irritated when people speak for me and ask "What does it mean?" Think for yourself and keep it to yourself. That's what makes it special and personal. By the way he didn't kill himself. Peace, Love and Empathy. MM

Come on people, when he says, "I am worse at what I do best," he is referring to the fact that he is addicted to heroin. Being an addict is what he believed he was best at, and THAT made him "worse." Not rocket science.

To Someone

Kurt Cobain was not "The best guy ever", nor was he a genious. Dont get me wrong, I like this song, but the lyrics are by no means great. The main reason Nirvana are so popular is because of their riffs. If you personally think that these lyrics are brilliant, then maybe you should listen to Led Zeppelin. In my opinion, there is no band that is lyrically better than Zeppelin. I obviously know that both genres are entirely different, but if you want amazing lyrics, then listen to Led Zeppelin. They have a better lead vocalist, the best guitarist of all time and probably the best drummer of all time. Zeppelin rule!

yea, i totally agree with you..
when it comes to "a denial", u attains nirvana, and the last stage in buddhism-no desire towards anything,no care about anything in this world, feeling the ultimate emptyness

There's something special about this song; it touches the senses. I am a somewhat esteemed music critic and I must say, this song has made it to my top 100 of all time. It's mysteriously powerful and unique to an intensity in which hadn't been seen in the soft rock scene since Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven". In conclusion; R.I.P. Kurt Cobain. He left a legacy with his death and a song of which is so amazing that it had to be in The Rolling Stone's top 10 on their Top 500 of all songs of all time list.

I was there !! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/15/11

I've really got a kick outta all of the theories on what this song is about !
Just look @the video !!! That sums it up ! I was in the video ... We were told to break things & mosh & yell & rebel just like the youth of today ...well the youth of back then ! I remember that day as if it were yesterday ! Kurt was a great guy , shy & just a down 2 earth normal funny guy ! He made the day fun & hung out with us the whole 12hrs!
Almost got that shirt !! RIP Kurt !!! I was & still am truly honored for being apart of history !
Thanx

Stop being a fake (and a bit disrespectful to Kurt) and just enjoy the music Nirvana created.

If you were truly Kurt and faked your death, you wouldn't publicly announce it on the world wide web. Good grief.

R.I.p. Kurt Cobain

I'm Not Dead | Reviewer: Kurt Cobain | 6/18/11

I have to come out and say this. You guys have drove me to say this. I'm not dead. My suicide was faked to get me away from the limelight. Just know, that i still think fondly of all of you. I loved waking up and knowing that people cared about my music, and who we were. Please forgive me. Please forgive me for leaving. I would return, but the burden of having to please so many is hard. Some of my fans, like you, love all of our stuff. But others don't. So i love you guys, and don't let Courtney know i'm alive. Later.

The best of the best | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/11/11

I think that is the best things in a history of music, no just of grunge... this song is simple and thats should to be.... on guitar repeats 4 chords, two riffs and easy solo... on a bass line 4 notes with two rhythms.... on drums two rhythms with several transitions and on vocal beautiful lyrics!

kurt cobain was a brilliant man and i love this song. the first five tracks on nevermind are the greatest collection ive heard in all my years. these lyrics are about as easy to interpret as elmer fudd in spanish but kurt nailed the singing of them anyway in the way only he can. its a shame he let depression and mainstream loathing get the best of him. he was a rare and unique talent. anyway, this song has brilliant music and is a true innovation in the field of quiet verses and loud choruses. nirvana was brilliant at quiet then loud music. i love grunge. so dirty and so depressing.

truth | Reviewer: Kevin | 4/17/11

These lyrics accurately and ingeniously portray the mindset of the average apathetic, sarcastic, and indifferent adolescent better than any other song ("I found it hard... it's hard to find.. oh well, whatever, nevermind. The minimized bare-bones elements of the song with four repeated power chords, a bassline the same as the guitar chords, a solo the same as a vocal melody, without any cheesy over-produced unnecessary added garbage is the perfect reaction to the terrible wasteland of music known as the 80's. This song is just what music needed, and is my personally favorite song. I love the intensity in the way the dynamics change from a scratchy jangly guitar and soft singing to a tidal wave of distortion, feedback, pounding drums, and raspy screaming vocals. Coming from a 16 year old, If you don't know what you're talking about, nobody wants to see their screen polluted by your agressively stupid opinions, so don't comment.

buddha ! | Reviewer: afraa | 2/5/11

this is an amazing song ofcourse
my fav song is come as you are !
but i just wanna say that when he says : a denial,at the end of the song, he means by this: when the individual doesn't feel like he exists anymore, when he reaches the nirvana stage, which is the highest stage of Buddhism!!
he is a true genius!!
R.I.P Kurt<3

just so you know... | Reviewer: Alexis | 1/7/11

To Chad:
it wasn't a perfume it's a deodorant and it was Dave's ex girlfriend who wrote it on their bedroom wall. Later Kurt decided to name the song that without realizing what Smells Like Teen Spirit was the original name for :)
Regardless it's one hell of a song!

u guys are thinking to hard | Reviewer: chad | 11/17/10

actauly he named this song teen spirit because kurts x girlfriend wore perfume called teen spirit. one day his girl friend wrote "kurt smells like teen spirit" on his apartment wall. kurt said the lyrics of this song dont have a meaning. he was more focused on the music
