Small Town Southern Man Lyrics - Alan Jackson

Review The Song (6)

Born the middle son of a farmer
And a small town Southern man
Like his daddy's daddy before him
Brought up workin' on the land
Fell in love with a small town woman
And they married up and settled down
Natural way of life if you're lucky
For a small town Southern man

First there came four pretty daughters
For this small town Southern man
Then a few years later came another
A boy, he wasn't planned
Seven people livin' all together
In a house built with his own hands
Little words with love and understandin'
From a small town Southern man

[Chorus:] HIS GREATEST CONRIBTUION IS THE ONES HE'LL LEAVE BEHIND....
And he bowed his head to Jesus
And he stood for Uncle Sam
And he only loved one woman
(He) was always proud of what he had
He said his greatest contribution
Is the ones HE'LL leave behind
Raised on the ways and gentle kindness
Of a small town Southern man
(Raised on the ways and gentle kindness)
(Of a small town Southern man)

Callous hands told the story
For this small town Southern man
He gave it all to keep it all together
And keep his family on his land
Like his daddy, years wore out his body
Made it hard just to walk and stand
You can break the back
But you can't break the spirit
Of a small town Southern man

[Repeat Chorus]

Finally death came callin'
For this small town Southern man
He said it's alright 'cause I see angels
And they got me by the hand
Don't you cry, and don't you worry
I'm blessed, and I know I am
'Cause God has a place in Heaven
For a small town Southern man

[Repeat Chorus]

My Dad just passed on to heaven last Wednesday and this song brings him into my heart every time I hear it. Daddy was a World War II veteran and the chorus is a snapshot of his life. Thank you, Alan Jackson, for a great song.

My Dad just passed away in January 2008. When I heard this song, I could hear him singing it about himself. He loved life and his family. Alan Jackson knows how to sing about someone's life. This makes me think about my Dad everytime I hear it. It's a very good feeling.
Thank you Alan.

every man's dream | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/25/2008

this song just makes me choke up because it brings my father to my mind. he's work hard all his life and has always said that he is a poor rich man because of his family. his hands show the wear and tear of the years and we've had a better life because of him. I know I that someday i'm at least have the man he is and well, Alan Jackson just puts into words what many of us can never express. He is a great song writer and makes you appreciate being humble and very close to your roots. I love this song and you can tell why AJ is what he is. I believe great people usually come from great parents.

Alan is the true Southern gentleman | Reviewer: Shari | 2/11/2008

Alan Jackson knows his way around a song--especially songs about everyday people. Smalltown Southern Man sums up the way of life for most of the men I've grown up around. The feeling Alan puts into a song is something powerful.
