Silent House Lyrics - Dixie Chicks

Review The Song (3)

These walls have eyes
Rows of photographs
And faces like mine
Who do we become
Without knowing where
We started from

It's true I'm missing you
As I stand alone in your room

Everyday that will pass you by
Every name that you won't recall
Everything that you made by hand
Everything that you know by heart

And I will try to connect
All the pieces you left
I will carry it on
And let you forget
And I'll remember the years
When your mind was clear
How the laughter and life
Filled up this silent house

One room
Two single beds
In the closet hangs
Your favorite dress
The books that you read
Are in scattered piles
Of paper shreds

Everything that you made by hand
Everything that you know by heart

And I will try to connect
All the pieces you left
I will carry it on
And let you forget
And I'll remember the years
When your mind was clear
How the laughter and life
Filled up this silent house
Silent house

In the garden off the living room
A chill fills the air
And the lilies bloom

And I will try to connect
All the pieces you left
I will carry it on
And let you forget
And I'll remember the years
When your mind was clear
How the laughter and life
Filled up this

And I will try to connect
All the pieces you left
I will carry it on
And let you forget
And I'll remember the years
When your mind was clear
How the laughter and life
Filled up this silent house

Filled With The Beauty of Loss | Reviewer: Lydia Pliska | 2/4/11

This song is really beautiful and deep but what fascinates me most is the shade of loss in it. I believe that it is about bringing back those days of happiness with a person whose "mind was clear" then and who consequently suffers from a mental disease and is still alive but unaware of time and reality. The lines "Every day that will pass you by/every name that you won't recall/books in scattered piles of paper shreds" evidently point at the mental derangement and it's getting sad to see the contrast between the past happy years and the hurt of present. Thus it's hard to realize that nothing's the same anymore but anyway those memories give you strengh to carry on and feel the beauty of the moment ("a chill fills the air and THE LILIES BLOOM").

Crowdies live 2007 | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/8/07

While I fell in love with this song on the 2007 Crowded House album "Time on Earth," it wasn't until I saw them perform it live that my love affair was cemented. A beautiful, haunting ballad full of rich imagery and powerful harmonies. If this is what comes of Neil Finn co-writing with the Dixie Chicks, I say bring it on!

Cowriter for "Silent House" - Neil Finn, formerly of Crowded House | Reviewer: Catherine Todd | 2/22/07

I was mesmerized by this song while watching the documentary "Shut up and Sing" with the aftermath of the Bush comment by one of the Dixie Chicks. It is magnificent, and co-written by Neil Finn, formerly of Crowded House. I hope that he, and the other songwriters on their very fine album are given credit on this website. (Gary Louris, formerly of the Jayhawks and Dan Wilson, formerly of Semisonic).

This website is one of the few that ever listed any songwriters at all, and I found the actual songwriters names on Performing Songwriter.com. Thanks.
