Sheep Lyrics - Pink Floyd

Review The Song (37)

Harmlessly passing your time in the grassland away;
Only dimly aware of a certain unease in the air.
You'd better watch out!
There may be dogs about
I looked over Jordan, and I've seen
Things are not what they seem.

That's what you get for pretending the danger's not real.
Meek and obedient you follow the leader
Down well trodden corridors into the valley of steel.
What a surprise!
A look of terminal shock in your eyes.
Now things are really what they seem.
No, this is not a bad dream.

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want
He makes me down to lie
Through pastures green He leadeth me the silent waters by.
With bright knives He releaseth my soul.
He maketh me to hang on hooks in high places.
He converteth me to lamb cutlets,
For lo, He hath great power, and great hunger.
When cometh the day we lowly ones,
Through quiet reflection, and great dedication
Master the art of Karate,
Lo, we shall rise up,
And then we'll make the bugger's eyes water.

Bleating and babbling we fell on his neck with a scream.
Wave upon wave of demented avengers
March cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream.

Have you heard the news?
The dogs are dead!
You better stay home
And do as you're told.
Get out of the road if you want to grow old.

I'm pretty sure the sheep are Christians following the path to their death. The dogs (Gods) are dead when they kill the person who used to put them in the devices of death (Christ). Then, they get free and still just do the same thing. They immediately try to scare and intimidate those that they tell are free.

Dogs, Pigs, Sheep | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/28/12

This is just my own take on the album. I think that the genius Roger Waters looked at the people in 1970's England and compared them to animals just like the equally genius George Orwell did with his incredible allegory of the birth of Communism and Stalin's betrayal. I think that the Dogs represent corrupt, greedy selfish businessmen who feed on their easy prey but in the end are dragged down by a metaphorical stone. The Pigs are the powerful wealthy and corrupt people at the top who use violence and intimidation to stay powerful while the meek Sheep are the blissfully ignorant masses, the prey of the Dogs and Pigs. What a genius album. One of my all time favs.

got you all | Reviewer: The Mighty Face | 5/10/12

I think Mr. Waters got just the exact emotional response he sought, except of course the guy with the obama drivel whose head is obviously in the sand, So what i get from the song is Waters trying to say "hey people there's something very wrong here and it's time for all of us to think with our own minds, look with our eyes open, and feel with our own hearts before it's too late. the revolt at the end may or may not be the answer but at the very least something must change". So THINK NOT with the program that the PIGS have installed in you. You are Mankind and quite capable of writeing your own thoughts/spells/programms. And by all means get out of the road if you want to grow old... Bravo Sir Roger, the whole album makes my tears run down, my anger well up, and transmutes my Fear into Courage, and I Love it and all of you.

An division of people into 3 categories, leads to a deeper thought brought forth by Waters of exposing three aspects (or failures) of the soul. Murder, greed, and fear; which all of us harbor, from time to time, in some shape or flavor (except for the enlightened). The number of animals selected, and even the reference in the song title "pigs, three different kinds", an attempt at a comparison to the christian theme of 'trinity'? Unholy trinity?

Ultimately, the true spiritual voyage of humanity (although caught from time to time in these pools of despair) is about much, much more ... This, together with the now classic sound of the tracks, makes for ONE OF THE BEST ROCK ALBUMS OF ALL TIME.

The Dogs are greedy businessmen, the pigs are the wealthy people at the top of the financial ladder, not police as a lot of people think. This is evidenced in the third verse when Rogers songs "Hey you, Whitehouse", a reference to Mary Whitehouse, a British social reformer during that time period. The sheep are the citizens who just follow the leaders, realize the error of their ways, throw a revolution, only to let the exact same type of people take control again

Uh. Dear Fergus Joel, the entire album is a commentary on society. Dogs is about politicians (hence, in this song, "the dogs are dead", etc), Pigs is about the police, and Sheep is about the masses. You're allowed to read into the lyrics, darling." This guy has it right, everyone else is WAY off. Like WAY off. Offending the Floyd off.

Guys,

you all got it right, about the sheep, pigs and dogs as compared to people. Note however that this conceptual album is mostly based on George Orwell's "Animal Farm". Do lurk, it's worth it!

Pigs on Wings stand out a little, however.

when he talks about dogs hes talking about god. i know this for fact.we r sheep, the gov are the pig.pigs on the wing part 1 and 2 r reflections of each other and the torment of suicidal thoughts, he is singing from 2 points of views within hi his own mind, wew all have a trinity the I, U, and ME

Awesome song great album | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/19/11

For me the album is comparing people to animals. Sheep is about the common unknowing person who just drones thru life without questioning authority(Pigs). The verse beginning with "the lord is my shepherd..." is mocking a verse from the bible. If this verse they says "He maketh me to hang on hooks in high places He converteth me to lamb cutlets". Basically stating authority(pigs) will screw u over because to them u r expendable.
this is what the song means to me

Obama | Reviewer: Tony | 12/21/10

This song was written before Obama was born. How could it be about Obama. I know Waters is good but hes not that good. Yes his songs do have political overtones. try listening to his lyrics, the man is a genius .
The most important part of the song is the Lord is my Sheperd verse which is hardly audible and the lyrics were left off the CD. I spend hours as a teenager listing to floyd with the album cover open, following the lyrics and trying to decipher it all. most of it I got wrong but who cares as its great music.

Interpretation of Animals | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/23/10

The way I see the album is the bookend songs of "Pigs on the Wing" talk about Waters not caring about people, simply wanting fame and fortune, but as he grows older he understands and cares more of the people. (Considering he wrote most of the album, it's from his standpoint)

Dogs are the people who work hard, and get fucked over. The people who want fame and fortune, some achieve it, some get killed and caught along that path.

Pigs aren't just police or politicians, they're anyone who is greedy, anyone who makes it big and forget he was once a dog. Anyone who is and was corruptable.

Sheep are people who tend to just get by, they have no wont of anything, but they turn a blind eye of the pigs that are taking everything from the dogs. The sheep do no direct harm, but by merely going with the herd they potentially every bit as evil as the pigs.

There you have it. Long Live The Floyd.

My fitting of the song to todays reality | Reviewer: Zane Watts | 10/2/10

Politics is not what was intended. No, I was not just pinging on Obama. Just making an example. The point in this song I was making is "Following others who control." Whether it be politics, a movement, religion or otherwise.

Song lead to The Ultimate Life | Reviewer: Christina | 9/27/10

Sam Gerard heard this song as a young man and immediately and forever stopped eating animals. The song propelled him into starting his company called The Ultimate Life (www.ultimatelife.com) producing The Ultimate Meal for vegans. I've been consuming this incredible food for 15 years.

Sheep | Reviewer: Jim | 9/27/10

It's about a parallel between the lives of the silent masses and sheep on the killing floor. The sheep are being led to the killing machines and such, and are being killed; they think it's it's the norm, seeing the human butchers as their Gods, and want to appease them - their hunger. The parallel is the masses today that just take what their given without question, like sheep being led to the slaughter and believe it's what is best for them. The final verse is the percieved revolution.
