She's Always A Woman Lyrics
Artist(Band):Billy Joel
She can kill with a smile
She can wound with her eyes
She can ruin your faith with her casual lies
And she only reveals what she wants you to see
She hides like a child,
But she's always a woman to me
She can lead you to love
She can take you or leave you
She can ask for the truth
But she'll never believe you
And she'll take what you give her, as long as it's free
Yeah, she steals like a thief
But she's always a woman to me
CHORUS:
Oh--she takes care of herself
She can wait if she wants
She's ahead of her time
Oh--and she never gives out
And she never gives in
She just changes her mind
And she'll promise you more
Than the Garden of Eden
Then she'll carelessly cut you
And laugh while you're bleedin'
But she'll bring out the best
And the worst you can be
Blame it all on yourself
Cause she's always a woman to me
--Mhmm--
Bridge
CHORUS:
Oh--she takes care of herself
She can wait if she wants
She's ahead of her time
Oh--and she never gives out
And she never gives in
She just changes her mind
She is frequently kind
And she's suddenly cruel
She can do as she pleases
She's nobody's fool
And she can't be convicted
She's earned her degree
And the most she will do
Is throw shadows at you
But she's always a woman to me
--Mhmm--

Delving too deep? | Reviewer: Josh | 6/26/09
I think you all might be looking a little too much into the background of this song. I'm not saying that isn't a clever, thoughtful way of reviewing its content, but this song resonates with me, and I've drawn my own interpretation which is far simpler. In my opinion, at the core of this song lies the fact that the author loves the subject unconditionally, and I think that's what's really important to take away from it. In any kind of relationship, one partner can unwittingly hurt the other through small actions that are easily misinterpreted. Saying that it's a "lousy relationship" is ridiculous, because if any of you have been in a relationship, you probably know that to be true.
The lyrics are powerful and paint a beautiful picture because they are vague: when I hear "carelessly cut" I imagine one partner acting in any way that might make the other second guess his/her true feelings. It's difficult to know someone's real feelings on anything, and the true impact of emotion can't be delivered by saying something like "I love you." Naturally, one or the other often wonders, "am I really loved? How can I truly know?"
Honestly, it bothers me a little that so many of you think of this as sexist, or look into Joel's personal relationships at the time as an indicator of what the song is attempting to communicate. You can never TRULY know the inner workings of an intimate relationship between two people anyway, no matter what you think you know about love. As far as being a responsible partner is concerned, neither he nor she is doing anything wrong by not spending every waking moment thinking about the other, but sometimes, one cannot help but feel "cut" by that.
I think it's a beautiful song that wonderfully depicts the wonder that is unconditional love, and if Joel was swayed by any particular event, if a particular force manipulated his emotions and this song was the result, I doubt you'll be able to read about it on Wikipedia.
What I think... | Reviewer: Serafina | 6/16/09
I think this song is so beautiful! I think it's about a man who loves a woman very much- truly and deeply. She's very independent and very unique, and despite flaws that the world sees, he'll let her be because he loves her.
It's such a haunting song... when I first heard it, I fell in love with it...
shes always a woman to me | Reviewer: karin | 6/17/09
in my opinion
this song is sexist, many men and women "love" this song and do not read the lyrics. Joel sings about the negatives and positives about a woman and at each verse states "but she is always a woman to me" no matter what she does, that is all she will be, nothing more.
Doesn't anyone see a hint of sarcasm? | Reviewer: Wes robbins | 6/1/09
He is revealing her for who she is which is a selfish, ruthless person and although she may have charm and allure it is this man who is finally coming to his senses and seeing her in her true light. I think this song is brilliant.
Infactuation is not love | Reviewer: shannon | 5/10/09
It seems ths song describes a character type of a woman. Hes desribing men who are in love with some one who is not good for them but continus to stay in the relationship. This a codependant relationship a weak man who can stand on his own and feels that the best thing he has is her and can not do any better. It could be her beauty, her sex, her money many reason. This song is what it is and to me I wish the song could express the perfect woman in lyrics versus the flawed women. I like the song anyway.

I think that everyone interprets songs differently. My interpretation of this song is that women do a lot of things that are misjudged and that only if you know someone closley can you determine who they are. He knows her deeply and loves her for who she is, and loves her mean side.at the end of the day he knows she's a woman. Women do things out of there cookie cutter mold, and that's why he knows she's a woman because shes independent and strong and thinks of herself above all is which a lot of women don't.and no matter what he sees the women inside of her even if she doesn't show it to everyone.
My interpretation | Reviewer: JustMe | 3/13/09
When the song was released the women's liberation movement was really gaining momentum and I believe a lot of men didn't understand what it meant (did liberation mean that women trying to BE men?). So to me it captures the duality a man can discover/observe when he's involved with a woman who has embraced independance/liberation in context of what society's stereotypical expectations were of what it meant to be a woman.
To me the woman does not appear to either seek or need approval or guidance from others, especially the man in her life, and she's also not taking responsibility for others reactions to how she is. She is her own person, has accepted it and is proud of it.
And for all this he still loves her and recognises her as still being very much a woman.
Wonderfully Depressing. | Reviewer: Callie | 1/21/09
This song i think touches everyone very deeply. It is either the melody, his voice, or the lyrics. The lyrics are really well written. This women obviously beat this guy up pretty bad, she is strong but can be kind. She changes her mind frequently, she means to hurt him then forgives him im sure. But he love & hates her for it. I absolutely adore this song even though it makes me sad.
Always a women | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/21/08
I think this song is very realistic in the sense that your women may not be perfect but you still have to love her. The commonly used line of "but shes always a women to me" I personally feel that Joel is trying to say that she MAY sometimes act like a monster but shes really just a women. Which IS a true statement. I mean common girls, how many times have you completely totured you boyfriend/ex? I think Joel is finally giving in and refuses to fight with the opposite sex, because let's face it, we will always win
It's never good enough as Freud might tell you | Reviewer: Michael | 12/8/08
Very true. The victim only knows how to seek lousy relationship, and on the other hand the predator knows how to seek its prey as well. Who's the egg and the chicken? But the sufferings are real. Shadows throws at you, but somehow painful enough you'd rather be drinking furniture polish. He may have issues of his own, but he has a good heart. Every word and melody is carefully chosen. It's forgiving, non-judgemental, and loving. The sound is bittersweet, because he decides to love and accept. If she were the guy giving blackeyes and bruises would people have thought differently? Why would there be a truth, if someone simply can't accept the truth and want some other truths? Anyone who's been through this can relate the lyrics, but not everyone can come out, accept and be thankful to life itself as he did. And not everyone can be so witty, and musically talented to come out with such wonderful lyrics and melody to fit every word and his intentions. Btw, note that "The most she will do is to throw shadows" at you. He uses "will", rather than "could". And he chooses to blame himself, because he accepts and forgives, and because he chooses to respond that with love (which sometimes does not necessary mean being together). I just wish more people will like this song and get to appreciate why it was written. It's positive and has a very good message.
