Secret Heart Lyrics - Feist

Review The Song (16)

Secret heart
What are you made of
What are you so afraid of
Could it be
Three simple words
Or the fear of being overheard
What's wrong

Let him in on your secret heart

Secret heart
Why so mysterious
Why so sacred
Why so serious
Maybe you're
Just acting tough
Maybe you're just not man enough
What's wrong

Let him in on your secret heart

This very secret
That you're trying to conceal
Is the very same one
That you're dying to reveal
Go tell him how you feel

Secret heart come out and share it
This loneliness, few can bear it
Could it have something to do with
Admitting that you just can't go through it alone

Let him in on your secret heart

This very secret
That you're trying to conceal
Is the very same one
That you're dying to reveal
Go tell him how you feel
This very secret heart
Go out and share it
This very secret heart

This song can be taken in so many ways that they all be relevant to what was intended but I think it was written by ron sexsmith about his adolescent son and the struggles he saw him experiencing in finding his own personality and trying to "fit in" while also aching to becoming an individual person.

I am 90% sure that this song has a homosexual underlying theme."this very secret that you're trying to conceal, is the very same one that you're dying to reveal, go tell HIM how you feel"... and the song is about a man's secret heart, not a woman. lol, but as was stated that does not matter, the fact is that its a damn beautiful song. AND I LOVE FEIST!!!

Some have suggested this song has a gay angle. I doubt it. But that's irrelevant. Ron Sexsmith uses 'her' in his original lyrics. The video features a black & white Ron with a Rickenbacher, sublte drums w/brushes.

The real beauty of this song is in the construction of the lyrics (plus the haunting melody and great IV minor9 chord). With a songwriter's knack for getting right at the heart of the matter, Ron is gently confrontational.

In short, he is saying to a friend, "What's wrong with you? Are you man enough to tell her how you feel? After all, it's just three simple words. Furthermore, what you seem to be trying to hide is what you really want to say. So say it, already! Or are you just too afraid to let people know that you probably can't handle life alone in a useless shell."

"Let her in on your secret heart."

In addition, that final line can be read two ways. The other way is:
"Let her in on your secret, heart."

Ron Sexsmith, the author of this song, is amazing | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/10/10

Feist is fantastic, but the guy who wrote this song is just ridiculously talented. Make sure you check out his version of the song. Listen to some of his other tunes if you can. They're all brilliant and beautiful.

Feist is amazinggg | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/24/07

Feist covered this's originally by Ron Sexsmith and he was singing about a guy liking a girl. When feist covered it she changed "her" to them or "em'" it's not supposed to say him anywhere in the song. So no, it's not about a homosexual, it's just feist trying to change the song around so it can be sung from a man or woman's perspective. Such a great song.

love it | Reviewer: jonas | 12/11/07

I agree about this being about a gay guy struggling to identify that he likes another guy.. the lyrics are too close to be denied.. could be wrong though

regardless of this being the actual case or not it's still one of the beautiful songs that i've heard EVER

Could it be that this song is about a guy who is a homosexual? In love with another guy. "Maybe you're just not man enough?"
"Go tell him how you feel."
Sounds like a homosexual love song to me.

uhh... feist isnt a band | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/3/07

leslie feist (the solo artist) has a band to back her up, and for her music only uses her last name. she's one of the many members of the band, broken social scene, plus she's canadian. she mostly got started in france though, which is where she recorded this album.
i saw her live a few years back, she was absolutely amazing not to mention tres classy.

Feist is such a great band! | Reviewer: Jamie | 11/9/07

I found this band by absolute mistake too. I saw the new Ipod Nano video on it, and I LOVED the song 1234. This one is my fav so far.I love how all her songs are all completely different and have cool add ins like the beginning of this one! Keep making great songs! And trust me this helped me a lot I am going to tell the boy that I've had a crush on for 2 months how I feel about him. Great advice!
love your newest fan

the lyrics to this song might seem funny because they were written by a man - ron sexsmith from canada, which is also where feist is from. all of the versions that feist does are variations of ron sexsmith's original. hence the line "maybe you're just not man enough". ron's singing about his own feelings and how tough it is for him to share them. check it out - also beautiful!

i love this song! | Reviewer: Beth | 10/9/07

I love feist and no matter what new songs come out, i keep coming back to this one. I just can relate to it so much. I wish people would atually listen to the advice from this song!!!

i can relate | Reviewer: danielle | 10/4/07

i can relate to this song. only the song is meant for the guy. but to me, in my case, it's hard to reveal what i really feel. i like this song.

This song is hauntingly beautiful | Reviewer: StarWarsBob | 10/4/07

She is singing "Go tell him how you feel". She also sings "Let him in on your secret heart". It's a rare thing when someone sings a song that's from the inner core of their feelings. She is singing about her own feelings and emotions. Even though she sings "Maybe you're just not man enough", she is singing about herself. In the live version at the end she sings this.
"Very secret
That you're trying to conceal
Is the very same one
That you're dying to reveal
Go tell him how how you feel
Let him in on your secret
Let him in on your secret
Secret heart you're secret heart".

i love the song and all, but it sounds like she says "go tell him how you feel" to me. which is both funny and awful.

I love this song!!! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/16/07

I discovered this band, quite by mistake. I was watching t.v. and one of Feist's songs came on. I like it A LOT. So, I started downloading their songs like crazy. This song is so great, it's one of my favorite songs of all time. My favorite part of the song is "The secret your trying to conceal is the very same one your dying to reveal. Go tell her how you feel." I am absolutely in love with those lines.
