Hello, my name is Max and this is the bio I had to write for my band. We are called Say Anything. We have existed since Coby started playing drums over the horrible songs I wrote about girls while attending high school in Los Angeles, California. Being the egomaniacal singer type, I proceeded to kick out and\or drive away pretty much anyone else who joined the band, so there were a ton of lineup changes, yet somehow Coby and I ended up selling a lot of our self released\recorded cd. Soon, all these strange children started to repeatedly attend our live shows and tell their friends until we garnered a motley crew of a fan base.
Being fresh faced teenagers, as well as the fact that we were playing with bands like the Promise Ring (and, like, Rooney) it wasn't a surprise that all these big scary labels saw us as a safe bet and tried to get us to sell our souls to them. They also told us we could be the next Blink182 if we gave them our first-born children and agreed to do whatever the wanted. That didn't sound so hot so we chose to be totally "underground" and sign to Doghouse Records. They've put out such obscure, borderline D.I.Y records as The All American Rejects. We were stoked at this point, but how we looked (goofy) and sounded (annoying) had us lumped in with a certain genre that was begging, begging for a backlash. I got really disillusioned and weird and went to college for a semester. Thus, I decided we needed to make "respectable" music.
During the lonely, depressing period of time when I dropped out of college to prepare for writing and recording our first record for Doghouse, I thought often about what the point of my life was. Was I doomed to remain yet another earnest, upper-middle class bred whine-rocker? After all, hidden deep in the recesses of my mind, I had hidden the notion that I could do something incredible and different, that I could be somebody like Warhol, or Jesus. I had to write an album that was revolutionary in its content and presentation. Finally, one night, it hit me. THAT was what my record had to be about: the artistic struggle, the fact that every creative person has this sick ambition to affect some sort of change in society with their art, to be more than just a guy in a band or a poet or a sculptor. I couldn’t decide if this ambition was a good or bad thing but I decided to parody that overzealous drive in human beings by crafting a truly over the top musical about...myself. The songs were jam packed with fairly blatant nods to bands I dig (Queen, Saves the Day, Pavement, Faith No More, Fugazi, etc).
Together, the songs formed a narrative arc that we wrote an entire script around. The plot centered around a neurotic collegiate punk rocker (based on myself) who is imbued with a strange power that causes his inner thoughts to burst out of his mouth uncontrollably, backed by full instrumentation. He becomes the unwilling superhero of all things rock.. However, the process of playing all the instruments except for drums and singing all day turned into such an intense, draining process that I ended up wandering the streets of Brooklyn in a psychotic daze and getting thrown into the looney bin for two weeks. Needless to say, that sucked, so we parted with the idea of the "plot" portion of the record and decided we could make a much more concise record if we focused on just the music; after all, the songs told the story themselves. So Tim O'Heir (produced Sebadoh, Dinosaur Jr., Superdrag) and Stephen Trask (wrote the songs for\produced Hedwig and the Angry Inch) helped me create a debut record (entitled Say Anything… is a Real Boy) that I am truly proud of.
It had been out for a while, slathered in scene hype (not so ironically the very thing the album parodies) and was doing quite fine on its own but we and J records decided to partner up to see just how many kids we could turn on to this self deprecating mess of an album. My main motivation was to further my idea that no mainstream music fan is worth less then somebody who reads about our band on buddyhead or some livejournal. I am prepared for the chants of "sell out sell out sell out" and more than willing to literally spit back in the face of anyone who would desert me because I signed to a major label. My music is not something to be owned by a core audience. It’s made to be appreciated universally. So now it’s us and J records, one of the biggest music companies ever, but I don’t mind. After all, indies these days aren’t much different except you can’t afford to go on tour.
With money and support from our parents, we were able to go out on tour for the past two years, sharing the stage with bands I have loved for a long time, from Cave In to Dashboard Confessional, from the Bronx to Straylight Run. I know now that tour is so rewarding yet draining that it was worth all those bands writing three albums each about how hard it is. Our live performance is sweaty, silly, bloody, chaotic and when I sing, I sing both with and at the audience. I try to both embrace and rage against the ridiculous barrier between "the rock star" and "the kid." I try to show them we are one. With ease any one of them could be me because I rip off every artist I’ve ever seen perform and brew it all up in a big stew of rock.
So here I am, at "so far so good." It’s a hard place to be but it is a blessing. There’s so much hope for my future yet so much potential for me to become a) a coked up diva b) a bitter, penniless hack c) a cab driver. I don’t really care either way because there is that small chance I’ll get what I want; to be someone to relate to for anyone who is as alienated, awkward, spastic and passionate as me.

Say Anything is one the smartest bands currently producing music. With unique lyrics and awesomely addictive melodies, it's very rare for me to listen to a song by them and not enjoy it. Each album they've put out is almost like its own story, creative and entertaining. It's also refreshing to hear a band not writing the same song over and over again. I'd highly recommend this band to those who might not even typically listen to the genre of music they record under. Definitely a group worth keeping an eye on!

For my best friend's birthday present we went to your show tonight in Pheonix. You're one of his favorite bands and was one of the few shows he would actually agree to going to see. Appreciate what you do, and how you do it. Amazing show. amazing performance. Amazing memory. I only wished you headlined instead of Angels and A$$holes. I'll see you again. That's for sure.

Max. wow. I had never heard your music till my equally socially retarded and slightly eccentric friend played your cd while driving me home one day. The songs hooked me and kept me deeply involved. (which is hard for me. I get bored easily. ) I was shocked by the honesty and candor. The bitterness was relatable as well haha. I chalked up all my insanity in the past to being absurdly female but I've never met a GUY who could say all the things I'm feeling word for word. Well Done. Good to know I'm not alone. Your songs are golden. Never stop. Seriously, my friend and I need your music haha.
Devoted (Maybe Creepy?) Fan | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/13/10
The first song I heard by Say Anything was Wow! I Can Get Sexual Too! (And when I ask people if they have heard about you guys, that's usually what they reply with...That's a good thing, right?) After, I had to find everything. That sounds creepy. Doesn't matter. The lyrics to every song just...They are so much more then all the other songs I listen to. That sounds creepy too. Damn it. I just...These are songs you connect to. They give words to some things I just can't even describe and they make me laugh and they make me cry and they make me rightfully angry and they make me feel...? I've never left a comment or review or anything on these kinds of sites before, but Say Anything has been my favorite band for years now and I can't even imagine that changing. Even if they never make another song (Please, whoever may or may not be up there, do not let that happen.) (There goes that creep factor again...) they will still be my all time favorite band. Everything about Say Anything is awesome and there are no words to truly describe how awesome except 'You have to listen to them.'
My current favorite song by them is A Certain Type of Genius...I connect to that song so well...Just thought, as if you haven't been told enough, that you should know your song has made me feel like someone out there gets it and isn't just faking it. That there are really awesome people in the world and not everyone is singing about lost love and pulled heartstrings with the same broken and overly heard metaphors.
Thanks for just being Say Anything. I can't imagine not enjoying your songs. Again, thanks. Really.
(And there's that creeper alert going off...Better stop typing.)
Max- About being a person who can relate with someone like yourself... | Reviewer: marc kipfer | 12/17/09
I feel like i just read a message from myself or something. I had never heard of Say Anything, but of course, someone in my hometown, Peachtree City/Fayetteville told me that Jeff and Jake were in this band. Having remembered them really well I checked out your band, and I think i found a new fav. So anyways, I'll remember that whole obvious nod thing.
Coming to my college | Reviewer: Kyle | 12/15/09
Max, great job man. From Is A Real Boy... to In Defense of the Genre and your new band Two Tongues with Chris to the new self entitled Say Anything CD. I am proud of you man. MY best friend hooked me up with your band name about three or four years ago and I have to say that your number one on my list. You beat out the Beatles and Poison. I use to be a hard 80's rock fan. But I switched over to indie/alternative rock as soon as I heard you sing about your commitment to the band. I never saw you guys as annoying or goofy. Alive With the Glory of Love has been one of my favorite songs ever since I heard it. I am very stoked that you guys are coming to play at my college in the spring. It was between you guys, Flogging Molly, and the lead singer from System of a Down. Without a doubt you guys won and an article was published in the school newspaper about your new album. Of course I knew about it way before anyone here really did. I have followed you from Say Anything to Two Tongues. Chris Chonley and you do an amazing job as dual vocalists. My favorite song from that album was Wowee Zowee. I have never been to a concert before. Weird isn't it? Since music is my life. But your concert here will be my first and I expect nothing but perfection from you guys. If you ever get the time to read this, then I hope you know no matter how future albums come and go, what you have already given me is gratitude enough. Thank you, you have helped through the good and the bad times. Through break ups and make ups. You have inspired me to start writing songs and relate my feelings and awkwardness through my lyrics. Ever get bored of being famous and want to chat with a fan that is not completely psychotic or someone who actually knows what they are talking about. Hell we can even talk about other bands too, considering you hear enough about your band all the time then you can email me at my address.
Life Changing... | Reviewer: Neb | 10/27/09
Before I heard the first Say Anything song (and believe me, I was hooked after the first guitar stroke and drum beat), it was hard for me to find music that related to things that go on in my life. Whatever emotion is running through my body at the moment, I can find at least three Say Anything songs to go with it and cheer me up.
Max- Amazing lead singer. I've never heard another voice like him before in my life, and it's beautiful. The first time I saw him in person, which was just last night, I was in shock. All six of these men are my heros.. Max was the first one I saw.. I cried at the sight of him. I was so happy that I was actually looking at one of my heros. And he does try to show the audience that "we are one".. I made eye contact with him more than once.
Parker-Amazing keyboardist and vocalist. I've said for a long time that this kid could do great things with his voice. Every song that he sings in it almost makes me want to cry. He's such a cutie, too.
Jeff and Jacob-They're adorable for starters... They are amazing guitar players.. If anything happened to Say Anything (Moses, Jesus, Allah lets hope nothing does..) they will go far. They're other project is amazing as well.
Alex-Love that kid... The bass is the heart of a song.. The bassist is the one who needs to give it the heartbeat... He does just that. I love their bass lines.
Coby- Dawww. Drummer! With the exception of a few songs, what song is a song without a drumbeat? It makes every song better.. And he's just so darn cute.
After the sweet, sweet music of Say Anything entered my ear canal, my life changed... I started waking up to a brighter day, feeling better about myself, speaking up for things I beleive in, and I became less judgemental...
Thank you Max, Parker, Jeff, Alex, Jacob, and Coby. I hope you guys enjoyed the dinosaurs that I bought for you in Covington.
Love you guys, keep doing what you're doing and please, please please keep the crew that you have right now, because you guys are great! In the end, you're all each other will have. :)
-Neb

They're the shiz.
I spent all my money trying to find all their albums and EPs, they're one of the few bands I would go out and find their cds instead of doing the usual download.

i love this band and i would never stop listening to it just because of one bad song or so. i can relate to the songs, they make me love music more and more. sure i like some songs better than others, but i mostly love them all. the first concert i ever went to was a Say Anything concert, and it was truly memorable. i will never forget my first concert and who played. i also love how i can relate to max. he is a truly awesome person and i respect him so much for doing what he's done and for telling people about him being bi-polar. when i listen to Say Anything i just get the feeling like max knows me cause of what he sings. and i'm sure i'm not the only one. i just wish your baseball album was still for sale. anways, thank you for the great music and the great times i have listeing to and singing your great music.
