Somewhere around South Yorkshire, UK there was a band that
started life as SOB during 1976 with founder members Graham
Oliver and Steve Dawson. This band joined forces with
another local band, Coast, featuring Biff Byford on vocals
and Paul Quinn on guitar. The two bands then finalised with
a line-up comprising of the then 26 year old Graham 'Oly'
Oliver, Steve 'Dobby' Dawson (27), Paul 'Blute' Quinn (26),
Pete 'Frank' Gill (27) and Peter 'Biff' Byford (27). The
name of the band was Son Of A Bitch.
That name was dropped a few years later and the band
re-christened themselves SAXON. They were at this time
playing the usual rock clubs and concert gigs supporting
The Ian Gillan Band and Heavy Metal Kids, amongst others,
playing all their own material. Demo tapes we More...
Further to Jonathans review above, I've been trying to find out if Saxon based this on real events for ages! Saw them play it live in November and it was awesome. In fact it inspired my rock covers band to include 747 and it's one of our most popular ones now! Long may you rock Saxon!

What a cool and obscure song... | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song Frozen Rainbow performed by Saxon
I love this song. My friend George Roth turned me on to Saxon back in 1986. This was always my favorite...
Excellent song. I was too young to go to the first three or four Monsters of Rock when this song was released but later on i didn't miss any, and after experiencing the atmosphere there, I would say they wrote this song especially for the Monsters of Rock. Anyone agree?
Yeah - great track. Simple riffs are usually the best, and those that stick with you. I hadn't heard this for at least 20 years, but I remembered it and recently got it from it from iTunes. Now I often find myself singing this in my head - always halmark of a classic song. There are also two added bonuses: 1. a superb and memorable opening solo from Graham Oliver - not a speed merchant but a wonderfully crafted melody line that leads you up to the main riff. 2. Lyrics that are unusual and at the same time compelling - they paint a haunting picture of desperation before impending doom and yet leave you feeling there is still more to it than you understand. Bruford's voice is also great. The song sounds like it was based on a real event - I haven't found out what, though - anybody know more??
Best heavy metal song ever!! The first heavy metal song I heard and it still the the best!

In my opinion one of the best saxon, and even heavy metal, songs ever made. Yeah, I think that covers it.
