Saturday Night Special Lyrics - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Review The Song (13)
Two feets they come a creepin'
Like a black cat do
And two bodies are layin' naked
Creeper think he got nothin' to lose
So he creeps into this house, yeah
And unlocks the door
And as a man's reaching for his trousers
Shoots him full of .38 holes
Mr.Saturday night special
Got a barrel that's blue and cold
Ain't no good for nothin'
But put a man six feet in a hole
Big Jim's been drinkin' whiskey
And playing poker on a losin' night
And pretty soon, Big Jim starts a thinkin'
Somebody been cheatin' and lyin'
So Big Jim commences to fightin'
I wouldn't tell you no lie
And Big Jim done pull his pistol
Shot his friend right between the eyes
Oooh Saturday night special...
For twenty dollars you can buy yourself one too...
Oooh let me tell you all about it...
Well hand guns are made for killin'
They ain't no good for nothin' else
And if you like to drink your whiskey
You might even shoot yourself
So why don't we dump 'em people
To the bottom of the sea
Before some ole fool come around here
Wanna shoot either you or me
Ooooh it's a Saturday night special
And I'd like to tell you what you can do with it too...

what an outdated and overused excuse for idiots to own handguns.do you Americans really think you would be any less safe if hand guns were banned.c'mon you're not that stupid are you. Ronnie was right dump them in the sea.we don't own hand guns in Canada and I live a safer life than you.no worry some fool gonna shoot me when he's drunk or stoned or trying to rob me.Americans killing Americans is American as apple pie and Sunday football.
Seems pretty clear, why so defensive? | Reviewer: Sean | 8/11/12
This isn't anti-gun, this is anti-handgun. This is about the fact that there are bad people and the weapon of choice is the hand gun. While this statement might be disagreeable to some, to argue what the song means is kinda thick headed.
amazing man with natural wisdom and true understanding | Reviewer: sharonjackson | 2/10/12
I have always had a strong and unexplainable connection with Ronnie van Zant from a very early age. His gift to completely help me feel his words so deeply, is one of the strongest connections I have with anyone. Even though I was born on Jan 02 1977, I still attended a live performance, one of the last, through my then pregnant mother. I honestly believe that his strong magnetism reached me. I take the words of Ronald Wayne Van Zant as the Gospel. Being a true southern girl from TN I was brought up around guns. But,having one pulled on me as a child by a man trying to lure me into his truck, placed deep rooted fear. I am a mother of 4 and own no guns. That said, I am a true believer of protecting oneself and family. Guns or no guns. Its a personal choice. Ronnie felt strongly in his belief and knew he was a man with boundless insight. I am forever grateful to that man and will continue to preach his words and wisdom.
2nd Ammendment! | Reviewer: RTWINGBOXER | 10/25/10
Ronnie Van Zant had gotten shot in the led I believe when he was young. That's why he was anti handgun. My favorite band. But to be against legal ownership of a handgun because of it, I'd hate to say it but ignorant. So if someone attacks you with a bat, should they all be banned too now?
I'm not trying to carry on this bickering; I'm trying to end it. | Reviewer: waster | 2/12/10
Confederate (and Billy), sry but u are wrong bro.
You are trying to attribute deeper or symbolic meaning to this song when the lyrics are relatively prosaic. (Meant to be taken literally.) That works with plenty of classic rock songs, but not this one.
]]]So why don't we dump 'em people
To the bottom of the sea[[[ is pretty frigging plain.
Examine the entire body of their work/lyrics; Skynyrd are no-BS southern boys (part of what got them the respect of a 30+ year career in rock), and I can't recall ever meeting a good ol' boy who favored inexact words and double-talk. That dog don't hunt!
]]]Before some ole fool come around here
Wanna shoot either you or me[[[
If u want to get technical, it's not people's "evil" ways that makes him suggest dumping them to the bottom of the sea, it's people's "fool"-ish ways. In other words they are not acting sensibly/rationally (or even intentionally), so let's make everyone safer by not having the guns around to begin with.
I'm not trying to take your guns, btw. But we are in a f-ed up situation and it is getting worse. Cripes this song is almost 40 years old and it was obviously a growing problem even back then...
I don't have the solution, I'm just saying.
How about: Peace through good Rock & Roll?!
What it's all about. | Reviewer: Confederate Boy | 2/13/09
Look guys we can bicker and fight all decade about wether handguns need to be banned. But that is not what we are bloging about (correct me if I'm wrong). This is about the song and how good it is and what it means. I personally believe that this song is not that simple. It's rather accusing people's evil ways and how the handgun is used to acomplish it. It is probably more a lesson on how we as the human race should be more careful and more considerate of our lives and the lives of those around us. But it is not necesarily anti guns.
Handguns, Ten Commandments, and more | Reviewer: Billy | 12/13/08
The commandment (of the 10 commandments) you're referring to uses the term 'murder' - not 'kill'. You shall not 'murder'. That is different than killing - murder is an evil type of killing. If someone breaks into my house and I kill them in self-defense, it is not murder, it is justice.
Handguns are very useful for self-defense - against criminals. The only handguns used to murder are those used by criminals, who, if they didn't have access to a handgun, would find another 'tool' for their murderous intent. People murdered before there were handguns, and they will still murder if handguns are banned. People murder people - not guns, guns are just a tool, which, if in the wrong hands, can be used for murder - but no more than a bat, a knife, or any other 'tool' one can think of to use.
Ban All Guns! | Reviewer: Greg | 10/19/08
Guns were made for killing. Thou Shalt Not Kill! Therefore, guns were made to violate one of God's Ten Commandments. This means that guns are godless, evil tools made by man for the purpose of killing; they are not of God. BAN ALL GUNS!
jbooyahh.... | Reviewer: dangle | 8/26/08
jbooyahh is the only person below my blog that isnt a dumbass!!! if your going state something, know what your f%$king talking about.. .38 specials are not custom made, actually they are probably "note I said probably" one of the most common revolvers since the 1960's to present day. and as jbooyahh said it's not anti-gun, it might be "anti-handgun", and for Bill... Bill, you win 1st place in the dumbass contest! How is banning a revolver racist? What, You dont think Blacks use revolvers? Think again, DUMBASS!!!
What's it about? | Reviewer: Jbooyahh | 2/3/08
I don't think it's about a certain type of hand gun, but hand guns in general, as the final verse indicates. It's not anti gun, since these are good 'ol boys from the south and probably love to hunt, but it is anti hand gun which is not about anything other than killing humans.
Dom is an idiot | Reviewer: Bill | 12/5/07
Saturday night specials are not custom made guns... they are inexpensive guns which are simply affordible defensive tools... banning/ limiting them is racist
two thumbs up... from a member of the NRA | Reviewer: Diego Carrion | 3/21/07
One of Lynryd Synryd's greatest songs.
Even though it's blatantly anti-gun, the guitar riffs, and how it points out what happens when they misuse guns, makes this one of my Favorites.
stupid useless guns | Reviewer: Dom | 1/3/06
in this song Ronnie sings about Saturday Night Specials which are custom made guns that are useless. you can't hunt with them so they are no good. he says in the song that they aint no good for nothin but killin. its a great song.
