Salty Eyes Lyrics
Artist(Band):The Matches
Review The Song (9)Print the Lyrics

Do you belong to a song?
Does it drag you along by the tongue at the top of your lungs?
Are you drunk?
Have you been drinking?
Do you below the overpass go with a fifth in your fist
reminiscing the kiss of a love that just didn't love as much as you did?

Please don't give up, dear walls
don't let the ceiling fall
when you belong to a song, salty eyes,
You belong.

Shrill notes begin, the grim violin
then from the silence a violence of sirens orchestrate the score
to which one more corpse is left quiet
How we become the hollows of drums
the rests between notes, the hollers that never reach throats
"friends" in quotes, they're not calling

Please don't give up, dear you
I'm but the sliver moon sliding through
when you belong to a song, salty eyes,
You belong.

Do please believe, however naive
let it drag you along by the tongue at the top of your lungs
and belong, salty eyes

When you belong to a song, salty eyes,
You belong.

Review about Salty Eyes

This song brings a tear to my eye :' ) | Reviewer: Ebony Bowie | 7/28/2008

I first heard it in the background whilst on msn. I found myself humming along before I even noticed how fantastic it was. Everything about it. The music, the voice, the filmclip, and, GOD, the lyrics O.O
FANTASTIC.
RE: SHHH
I agree. Bands that are "unknown" are better anyway ^.^

perfect | Reviewer: SHHH | 3/3/2008

I've always been a fan of this song, but truely fell in love with it when I saw The Matches play it.

Everybody there knew all the words, & we sang it loudly as possible.
It was then I found a new meaning to the song. Like even though you feel alone in this world, you still belong. Everyone singing that song proudly that night all 'belonged' to that song. We all came together, as strangers, and belted that song. Argh, amazing.

This song has completely changed my views on things.
The Matches are very underrated. I don't know how they aren't mega superstars.
But then again, I like having bands that not many know about.

means so much | Reviewer: Lea | 12/3/2007

To me, the line:
When you belong to a song, you belong
really if the writer saying 'i wrote you this song an its all about you and now you belong here in this song, even if you don't think you belong here anymore, you do." I think the writer is trying to save them.

What this song means | Reviewer: Corrupt Justice | 11/29/2007

The poem seemed to be about someone going through a depression...
Seeing the reference to drunkenness, how there was a love that didn't exactly go right, and the overall viewpoint which is trying to stay positive.

When I hear this song, I think:

Okay, someone has a screwed up love life (they were dumped by someone they really, really loved) and then turns to drinking and starts spiraling into depression.
Then the one singing the song comes in and tells the subject person to not give up, and get on with life and be happy.

The "When you belong to a song," pretty much means that you need to live your own life and live by your own tune, and "salty eyes" refers to crying.

I think it's quite an inspirational song.
I love the marching band/ circus like music to it. The first time I heard this song, the music caught my attention immediately and I've been hooked on this song ever sense.

I like singing out loud. | Reviewer: Emma | 11/21/2007

Especially to this song.
Not because it is a cool song to sing to, blah blah blah, but because it is an inspiring song.
I have it on my myspace and my friend who had never even heard of the matches loved it.
Not only is the song flowing and the instrumentals fabulous, but the meaning behind all the lines if great.
It is inspires me. This is my new 'get happy emma! gosh darn get happy!' song. It used to be 'Don't Give Up' by The Noisettes and 'Reach for the Sun' by Polyphonic Spree.

Thanks Matches for giving me hope for all the terrible music out there. Maybe one day all music will be as thoughtful and amazing as this.

Amazing. | Reviewer: Lopsided | 11/1/2007
