Saint Simon Lyrics - The Shins

Review The Song (8)

After all these implements and text designed by intellects
So vexed to find evidently there's just so much that hides
And though the saints dub us divine in ancient fading lines
Their sentiment is just as hard to pluck from the vine

I'll try hard not to pretend
Allow myself no mock defense
As I step into the night

Since I don't have the time nor mind to figure out
The nursery rhymes that helped us out in making sense of our lives
The cruel uneventful state of apathy releases me
I value them but I won't cry every time one's wiped out

I'll try hard not to give in
Batten down to fare the wind
Rid my head of this pretense
Allow myself no mock defense
As I step into the night...

Mercy's eyes are blue
When she places them in front of you
Nothing holds a roman candle to
The solemn warmth you feel inside

There's no measuring of it
As nothing else is love

I'll try hard not to give in
Batten down to fare the wind
Rid my head of this pretense
Allow myself no mock defense
As I step into the night...

Mercy's eyes are blue
When she places them in front of you
Nothing really holds a candle to
The solemn warmth you feel inside of you

The Shins are not unique... | Reviewer: M.Cooley | 7/27/13

"I wouldn't say they're unique, they just take aspects from other bands and incorporate them together"....this has to be one of the most sadly ignorant and intellectually lazy comments I have read in a few years, about ANY subject quite frankly. ALL bands and songwriters must learn their craft by playing songs of others, thus cultivating elements of their favorite influences or songs. However, I defy you to show me an artist or band recording these days (with more than a single song or album) that are as unique in sound and lyrical complexity in the past 20 years as Mercer and The Shins. The only one that comes to mind is Beck Hansen. This musical era is sadly bereft of intelligence, creativity, and craftsmanship, and you have foolishly lumped one of the few acts that AREN'T into that category. Perhaps they should record their next album using kitchen utensils, Yoko wails, and long-tailed cats in a studio of rocking chairs so that the chronically obtuse can appreciate it for it's originality.

Well Saint Simon was a French Utopian Socialist who believed that the parasites of society (lawyers, courts, aristocracy, etc) need to make way for the doers ( scientists, engineers, etc)

I think it's interesting that you suggest that the correct word's are "Lucy's eyes," not "Mercy's eyes." I think either way suggests a similar idea since Saint Lucy is often considered to represent grace or mercy. To me it almost sounds like the word "Lucy" is sung the first time, and the second time that verse comes around, the word is "mercy." Further, I think the idea that he is referring to Saint Lucy is interesting because the name of the song is Saint Simon. These allusions to saints and certain lyric throughout the song suggest an aspiration to not only figure out a faith or belief to adhere to, but also to simply do the right, or Godly, thing. The very first verse makes it obvious that he is looking to the saints for guidance but is having trouble discerning their words or actions. His mention of nursery rhymes suggests another place he is looking for guidance, but this too seems to be of little help. Despite these fruitless attempts at developing some sort of doctrine to live by, he is evidently determined to maintain a clean conscience and do the right thing: "I'll try hard not to give in." I think there are probably other directions a person could take in analysis of this song, but the saint motif seemed particularly striking to me.

By combining elements new ones are formed | Reviewer: -Your name here- | 10/22/09

Water has different properties than hydrogen and oxygen, does that not make it its own? You say that this band pulls elements from separate bands but by combining them in the way that they do, they become unique, you don't call ragtime jazz

Yes, they do take aspects from other bands, but that's what all bands do. Myself being a musician, and knowing a lot of musicians have to say that most inspiration comes from the music you listen to, there is no completely unique band.

i wouldn't say they're unique, they just take aspects from other bands and incorporate them together. It's not bad, but they're definately not unique. In this song are elements from weezer, SOAD, brian wilson, pixies, and modest mouse

Lucy's eyes | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/21/07

I believe it's "Lucy's eyes are blue when she places them in front of you." In paintings and statues, the martyr St. Lucy is frequently shown holding her eyes on a golden plate.

What an awesome song, I cant get it out of my head. The Shins are definitely one of the best unique bands going round at the moment
