Running Up That Hill Lyrics - Placebo

Review The Song (89)

[Kate Bush cover]

It doesn't hurt me.
You wanna feel how it feels?
You wanna know, know that it doesn't hurt me?
You wanna hear about the deal I'm making?
You be running up that hill
You and me be running up that hill

And if I only could,
Make a deal with God,
And get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
Be running up that building.
If I only could, oh...

You don't wanna hurt me,
But see how deep the bullet lies.

Unaware that I'm tearing you asunder.
There's a thunder in our hearts, baby.
So much hate for the ones we love?
Tell me, we both matter, don't we?

You, be running up that hill
You and me, be running up that hill
You and me won't be unhappy.

And if I only could,
Make a deal with God,
And get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
Be running up that building,
If I only could, oh...

C'mon, baby, c'mon, c'mon, darling,
Let me steal this moment from you now.
C'mon, angel, c'mon, c'mon, darling,
Let's exchange the experience, oh...'

And if I only could,
Make a deal with God,
And get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
With no problems [x2]

'If I only could, be running up that hill.' [x7]

dealing with pain. | Reviewer: May | 7/8/13

I really don't know why, but this song makes me think about my daily stuggle against chronic pain. Maybe I could make a deal with God and swap places with the ones who cannot understand me.
PS: sorry if i wrote anything wrong, english isn't my main language.

weird odd and addicting | Reviewer: pieholic | 2/16/13

in the part where they go "Be running up that road, be running up that hill, be running up that building," I keep expecting the beat to grow faster and faster, but it just returns......

Good Vibes! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/19/12

I love this mashup! It always puts me in the most marvellous of moods especially because of the 'Love comes calling, whatever you do' mix part. When one of my friends is in trouble, or I can help in some way, I like to feel that I can play a small part, in that I (as a kind of part of Life), can come and give some kind of help. Similarly, when someone has treated me badly, and I feel pretty wretched, I feel that there is a lot of love in the world and there might be enough for other people and me as well. It always brightens my day up! There is loads of Love and I feel really happy at the thought that I might be able to bring something of it to someone who doesn't expect it.

Perhaps it's not so friendly | Reviewer: augie doggy | 8/10/12

Despite Kate Bush's comments,I always took it that her partner has hurt her and she wants to swap places so that she can lose her pain and be as carefree as he is.To me the "c'mon, sugar"lines have always sounded sarcastic like she's taunting him, daring him to agree to the trade.

Every mind is a world | Reviewer: Lobster | 8/9/12

I actually believe there's a lot of ways to interpret this song.. I imagine my life, since I was a little girl watching my mom's preference to my brother. We both matter, don't we? But she still cares more about him.. She don't wanna hurt me, but if she only could feel what I feel (Make a deal with God..)she would understand how much it hurts. She.. be running up that hill, the hill she built, and that I climb every single day..

Gettin' Laid | Reviewer: Josh | 7/5/12

Sounds like a gettin' laid song to me. As in a song deliberately made to tap into real emotion yet for the sole purpose of getting girls in an easy mood. Jus saying. That's how a handful of musical associates I know work. Jus saying. Welcome to an official response from the band if they want to deny it.

it's very good song but it's sad | Reviewer: kos | 10/18/11

I looked accident pictures Chernobyl catastrophe. Empty villages, people the left houses for ever, consequences of ecological accident. and then i have understood that this song gives my feelings. that all.

Sufferage surrender | Reviewer: Shelly | 7/10/11

When i think of this song i think of someone (me) being selfish and thinking that they are they only one who hurts but then realizes someone (him my bf) hurts more and how somone(me) would do anything to take away all of the hurt just for someone (him my bf) wont suffer anymore like surrendering ur life to sufferage

crazy image | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/6/11

when i listen to placebo's version this little movie trailer pops into my head. I imagine a dystopian society, a towering prison in the outskirts of nowhere surrounded by trees for secrecy. The prison is more like a laboratory where special children from undesireable people are kept and experimented on. people are always trying to escape, to run up the hill to freedom. then a boy from the outside happens upon the place, sees a girl outside in an enclosure, falls in love, and is determined to get her out at all costs.

the mind is a strange thing, no?

death | Reviewer: tmb123 | 6/22/11

to me it sounds like he was in love with a girl and she ended up dieing, and if he could he woulkd take that moment of her dying and make it him so that she could live or to change her death so they could be togethr again

Regret | Reviewer: Chris | 5/30/11

I think this song is about regret for past wrongs against a loved one ("unaware that I'm tearing you asunder")—a story of a mutually destructive relationship due to a lack of empathy and/or understanding for one another ("you don't wanna hurt me, but see how deep the bullet lies"). In that way, it's a good metaphor for conflict of all kinds, regardless of the intended context. The singer wants to be able to go back and swap places, so both can gain an understanding of each other's motivations and emotions. Many people feel that, but almost always too late to make things right.

War | Reviewer: MidNite Strike | 5/29/11

To me, it reminds me of the horrific fighting conditions in the previous wars Vietnam, and only thoes veternas know what the fear feels like and I think this song reflects beautifully what they were thinking while in combat.

that gettysburg commercial was the only way i knew this song existed, it is crazy awesome. i heard kate bush's, it totally sucked!!! when i saw the commercial, i looked up willie nelson cuz i thought it was him. this song hits home.

Reading too much into it. | Reviewer: Cassandra | 5/18/11

While it is true that songs can be interpreted in many different ways, Kate Bush did say that it's just about understanding one another, a battle of the sexes, as someone previously stated. However, Placebo implants within the song such a different type of life than Kate Bush did that it's almost like an entirely different song. Placebo gives it this mournful quality that for me, conjures up memories of the love of my life and how he recently broke my heart while I still possess so many intense feelings for him. When I apply the lyrics to my own life, it reminds me of how I wished I could "make a deal with God" to switch places with my ex so he could see how terrible my life was right when he broke up with me, how much I was bullied because of it, and how awful it feels to still carry these feelings while potentially being able to influence him to realize that he made a mistake, especially considering the circumstances surrounding out relationship. But something like that just isn't possible. The quality that Placebo brings to the song opens the doors for so many interpretations since it is sung as if something more is meant than Kate Bush's original intentions. All in all, the song is completely brilliant. It just goes to show what different artists can do for the same song.
