Running Up That Hill Lyrics

Performed by Placebo
Review The Song (83)

[Kate Bush cover]

It doesn't hurt me.
You wanna feel how it feels?
You wanna know, know that it doesn't hurt me?
You wanna hear about the deal I'm making?
You be running up that hill
You and me be running up that hill

And if I only could,
Make a deal with God,
And get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
Be running up that building.
If I only could, oh...

You don't wanna hurt me,
But see how deep the bullet lies.
Unaware that I'm tearing you asunder.
There's a thunder in our hearts, baby.
So much hate for the ones we love?
Tell me, we both matter, don't we?

You, be running up that hill
You and me, be running up that hill
You and me won't be unhappy.

And if I only could,
Make a deal with God,
And get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
Be running up that building,
If I only could, oh...

C'mon, baby, c'mon, c'mon, darling,
Let me steal this moment from you now.
C'mon, angel, c'mon, c'mon, darling,
Let's exchange the experience, oh...'

And if I only could,
Make a deal with God,
And get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
With no problems [x2]

'If I only could, be running up that hill.' [x7]

Sufferage surrender | Reviewer: Shelly | 7/10/11

When i think of this song i think of someone (me) being selfish and thinking that they are they only one who hurts but then realizes someone (him my bf) hurts more and how somone(me) would do anything to take away all of the hurt just for someone (him my bf) wont suffer anymore like surrendering ur life to sufferage

crazy image | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/6/11

when i listen to placebo's version this little movie trailer pops into my head. I imagine a dystopian society, a towering prison in the outskirts of nowhere surrounded by trees for secrecy. The prison is more like a laboratory where special children from undesireable people are kept and experimented on. people are always trying to escape, to run up the hill to freedom. then a boy from the outside happens upon the place, sees a girl outside in an enclosure, falls in love, and is determined to get her out at all costs.

the mind is a strange thing, no?

death | Reviewer: tmb123 | 6/22/11

to me it sounds like he was in love with a girl and she ended up dieing, and if he could he woulkd take that moment of her dying and make it him so that she could live or to change her death so they could be togethr again

Regret | Reviewer: Chris | 5/30/11

I think this song is about regret for past wrongs against a loved one ("unaware that I'm tearing you asunder")—a story of a mutually destructive relationship due to a lack of empathy and/or understanding for one another ("you don't wanna hurt me, but see how deep the bullet lies"). In that way, it's a good metaphor for conflict of all kinds, regardless of the intended context. The singer wants to be able to go back and swap places, so both can gain an understanding of each other's motivations and emotions. Many people feel that, but almost always too late to make things right.

War | Reviewer: MidNite Strike | 5/29/11

To me, it reminds me of the horrific fighting conditions in the previous wars Vietnam, and only thoes veternas know what the fear feels like and I think this song reflects beautifully what they were thinking while in combat.

Reading too much into it. | Reviewer: Cassandra | 5/18/11

While it is true that songs can be interpreted in many different ways, Kate Bush did say that it's just about understanding one another, a battle of the sexes, as someone previously stated. However, Placebo implants within the song such a different type of life than Kate Bush did that it's almost like an entirely different song. Placebo gives it this mournful quality that for me, conjures up memories of the love of my life and how he recently broke my heart while I still possess so many intense feelings for him. When I apply the lyrics to my own life, it reminds me of how I wished I could "make a deal with God" to switch places with my ex so he could see how terrible my life was right when he broke up with me, how much I was bullied because of it, and how awful it feels to still carry these feelings while potentially being able to influence him to realize that he made a mistake, especially considering the circumstances surrounding out relationship. But something like that just isn't possible. The quality that Placebo brings to the song opens the doors for so many interpretations since it is sung as if something more is meant than Kate Bush's original intentions. All in all, the song is completely brilliant. It just goes to show what different artists can do for the same song.

Friend in jail for murder... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/9/11

I'm at a school in North Carolina and a friend of mine shot and killed another student. He says it was in self-defense but he is in jail waiting on his trial. It's been 6 months. He sent me the lyrics for this song...broke my heart. I love and miss him a lot and he definitely feels this song right now.
