Run For The Roses Lyrics - Dan Fogelberg

Review The Song (12)

Born in the valley
And raised in the trees
Of Western Kentucky
On wobbly knees
With mama beside you
To help you along
You'll soon be a growing up strong.

All the long, lazy mornings
In pastures of green
The sun on your withers
The wind in your mane
Could never prepare you
For what lies ahead
The run for the roses so red --

And it's run for the roses
As fast as you can
Your fate is delivered
Your moment's at hand
It's the chance of a lifetime
In a lifetime of chance
And it's high time you joined
In the dance
It's high time you joined
In the dance --

From sire to sire
It's born in the blood
The fire of a mare
And the strength of a stud
It's breeding and it's training
And it's something unknown
That drives you and carries
You home.

And it's run for the roses
As fast as you can
Your fate is delivered
Your moment's at hand
It's the chance of a lifetime
In a lifetime of chance
And it's high time you joined
In the dance
It's high time you joined
In the dance --

Run For The Roses was played while I was food shopping today, and while I have always loved that song, it created a vision of my 27 year old walker that I had to have put down last month, as the beautiful foal he had been at one time. This song just reaches down into the heart of any horse person out there. Thank You!!

I know this is not a new song but I play it every year at the time of the derby. I personally think it should be played at the derby every year in addition to the other standards.

Was looking for a graduation song for my daughters Senior video. She rides and works at a barn and loves horses. She will major in pre-vet in college in the fall. Happened to think of this song from my own college days. It's perfect to send her out into the world. Thanks Dan.

First performed at the 1980 Kentucky Derby (106th). Written in a couple of days a few weeks before. The ABC video of the first performance is on Youtube:

I was driving around tonight trying to remember the wonderful words to this song and picturing the moving images that several people have noted here. So join them in a heart felt request, does anyone know how to locate the video played with this song during a past Kentucky Derby and why isn't it played anymore as a tribute to Dan and all the great horses that have run for the roses?

I have several copies of the song, "Run for the roses" and would like to get a copy of the Derby Video. Both are beautiful, but together, they are outstanding!!!

Does anybody know where I can get the video?

The video shown during the Kentucky Derby with Dan's Run For The Roses playing was one of the most moving moments in all of sports for me. I had just graduated from Vet School, was full of enthusiasm, and to here that song on top of a great video made me feel very good about the career path I had choosen. I think it was in the Pre Derby show of 1979

I have been looking for songs to play at my funeral. I am in the winter of my life and planing my last goodbye for my family and friends. After reading the lyrics, the "Legacy" review inspired me to choose Run for the Roses. It truly does portray ones life. Thanks!

Every living creature leaves a legacy. i know this song refers to horses however I am a farm girl and this song to me embodies from birth to death. It takes us from childhood to adulthood and beyond. I have birthed, raised and sold many cattle and each generation makes you a little sadder and yet prouder at the same time. I am not from Kentucky but love horses. I am from the Shenandoah Valley, Bentonville,Va to be exact. I am only 40 but when I leave this world I will come back and haunt my nephew if he does not play this at my funeral. This song is that moving to me. I would love to see the video also. I miss Barbaro a great deal. He was an inspiration to us all. I hope to go to Louisville Ky to visit Barbaro.

I want the video also, if anyone knows where we can get it. Watching that video and listening to the words, makes your heart swell, your throat swell, and your eyes fill with tears, if you are a true Kentuckian, which I am, just happen to live in Ohio now.
