"I like to think of this record as a play with a cast of
intriguing characters," says Rufus Wainwright of his new
album, Poses. "My voice is the star of the play."

He describes one of these characters, with typical
frankness, as "a young, attractive bachelor who goes to the
city and leaves as a complete drug addict." The track
"Poses" is, in fact, a meditation on "the fall of a young
man."

"After I wrote 'Poses,' I knew I had a record," Wainwright
explains. "I realized that song would be the 'anchor'; a
lot of the album's material springs from it." He elaborates
on the disc's subject matter: "I was writing about things
in my life as they were happening, which is why I recorded

its an old french folk song. and an old story. and its what pretty woman is based on, as well as moulin rouge. its a song about him loving her no matter what and he knows what she is, but he knows WHO she is. and he thinks she perfect, but hates the profession.

My Views, Moulin Rouge | Reviewer: Konan
------ About the song Complainte de la Butte performed by Rufus Wainwright

Alright....here's what I pick up in it.
That "drunkeness" Is the feeling of being lost in her love. and he calls her a princess despite what she is, a sinner, and how he truly does love her.... and in the end after all was said and done it could only end in sorrow, but is a love...that will live on...forever :)
I think you're taking it to litterally people, Have you ever been caressed? If so, Do you remember that feeling of loosing everything, all your worries and just loving to be with that other person, your love? ...exactly :)

    It's terribly Romantic, and beautiful.

Bittersweet and Lovely | Reviewer: Jackie
------ About the song Complainte de la Butte performed by Rufus Wainwright

The song is basically about Christian and Satine (y'know, from Moulin Rouge? Since this song was on the soundtrack?). That's the reason it's on the soundtrack - it describes their relationship perfectly: a young man (Christian) who falls hopelessly in love with a courtesan (Satine), and how they love each other intensely but it can only end in sadness.

So yeah, the girl's a prostitute, but it's still a beautiful song, and would make a lovely lullaby so long as you don't tell the kid till later what the song means. Hehe =)

A wonderful song... | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song Grey Gardens performed by Rufus Wainwright

I loved this song immediately when I heard it. I have never grown tired of hearing it (and I have heard it many times)! The documentary it is based on (by the same name) is fabulous! Time very well spent,

    Unadmitting Romantic | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song Complainte de la Butte performed by Rufus Wainwright

I disagree with the Anonymous reviewer above who said "it is about having sex with drunken, under-aged (or at least extremely young) prostitutes..." I believe that this song goes along with the movie and the theme of the original "Roxanne" by the Police: I believe it is about a man who falls deeply in love with a prostitute, not caring that she is a prostitute and that she has lived her life in what most would believe to be a sin. I believe that she is "underfed" in love and that her "drunkeness" is the wonderful feeling she finally experiences of being loved. I think it is "killing" him to know that she has lived such a life of torment.

    lullaby? | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song Complainte de la Butte performed by Rufus Wainwright

To the 16 yr old's comments below: While I think the song is amazing, I'm not sure about it being great children's lullaby... you realize that it is about having sex with drunken, under-aged (or at least extremely young) prostitutes, right?

Truth at Last | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song Going To A Town performed by Rufus Wainwright

It's so refreshing to hear someone say truthfully that they are feeling disappointed by the country they love. I hope wherever Rufus went to he feels happy and I hope he has a great reason to come home in January of 2009!

Just Makes Sense | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song The Origin of Love performed by Rufus Wainwright

This song makes me cry. It just makes sense. I love Rufus Wainwright and I love this song. The way he sings it... it just goes down into my soul and brings out all the emotions I'm hiding. I love this song. I really love this song.

    R's | Reviewer: sacha
------ About the song Complainte de la Butte performed by Rufus Wainwright

I'm french, i live in france, and his r's are just perfect, not rolled, but not that gutturals: if you listen to the original song from 1955, you realize that RF's r's sound even more french than the original ones! French singers like rolling r's in this kind of songs, when it's about love and topics like that.

    possible confusion | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song Complainte de la Butte performed by Rufus Wainwright

Maybe people are confusing the concept of rolling r's with the back-of-the-throat sound that is essential to proper french pronunciation. I can see when he sings the word "princesse" some may hear a slightly rolled r, but it's good pronunciation for a non-native speaker, like someone else said above.

i hope that when i have children, i will remember that when i was 16, this is the song i wanted to be a lullaby for my children.

    Loving it. | Reviewer: Mark
------ About the song The Maker Makes performed by Rufus Wainwright

This song is so sad. I love it. The song portrays how things keep holding him back and then he finds out he can be happy.
    Amazing. I love this guy.

------ About the song Hallelujah performed by Rufus Wainwright

------ About the song Beauty Mark performed by Rufus Wainwright

Artists like Rufus are a rarity these days. Brilliant lyrics, and terrific to listen to. This lovely little song about his relationship with his mother really exemplifies his unique songwriting.

    Great song. | Reviewer: Joe
------ About the song Hallelujah performed by Rufus Wainwright

The original was done by Leonard Cohen. Jeff Buckley has done a version, as well as several other artists, including Bon Jovi (MTV Unplugged). All great.

    French | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song Complainte de la Butte performed by Rufus Wainwright

A lot of people don't realize the differences when singing in French. For instance, in classical French music, syllables not pronounced normally are pronounced. Even fellow Frenchmen interpret certain pronunciations differently when singing. But Rufus is French-Canadian so I'm not sure if there are any differences because of that area's differences when speaking French.

    Original | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song The Origin of Love performed by Rufus Wainwright

The original done by John Cameron Micheal is better. The lyrics are the same, but the song is much better in the original.
