Killswitch Engage Rose Of Sharyn Lyrics

Last updated: 05/10/2012 11:00:00 AM

Numb and broken, here I stand alone
Wondering what were the last words I said to you
Hoping, praying that I'll find a way to turn back time
Can I turn back time?

What would I give to behold
The smile, the face of love?
You never left me
The rising sun will always speak your name

Numb and broken, here I stand alone
Wondering what were the last words I said to you
It won't be long, we'll meet again

What would I give to behold
The smile, the face of love?
You never left me
The rising sun will always speak your name

It won't be long, we'll meet again
Your memory is never passing
It won't be long, we'll meet again
My love for you is everlasting

I've mourn for those who never knew you [x2]

It won't be long, we'll meet again
Your memory is never passing
It won't be long, we'll meet again
My love for you is everlasting

the song is titled rose of sharyn, and rose of sharon, or rosasharn, is a character in steinbeck's "the grapes of wrath". she lost her husband after he ran away from her, and through part of the book, she speaks of how he might come back and see her again. she has a "mysterious smile" at the end of the book, thus the smile line in the lyrics. however, this doesnt prevent the song from also talking about his mother at the same time.

Reminds me of my mom | Reviewer: Erica | 3/18/11

I always liked this song and the more I listedned to the lyrics I started hearing more and more that reminded me of my mom who passed away and it gets me emotional every time I hear it. I saw them when they came to Houston and when they played this song I shed a few tears, not only the words he's saying but you can feel the meaning in the song. The words are so pretty I'm actually going to have some of the lyrics placed on my Mom's headstone, such a beautiful song and it really helps when I'm thinking of her! Especially 'I mourn for those who never knew you' So true!!

the rising sun... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/9/10

everytime i hear this song i'm always reminded of those you who i've lost in my life. i can't help but sing along to this song, and get a little emotional about it. but i'm reminded in the lyrics that i will be seeing them soon; and the rising sun will ALWAYS speak their name.. i get goosebumps everytime i hear that part. it's very comforting to me. =)

what i have heard | Reviewer: p. charles | 6/8/10

Okay so what i have heard about this song is that it is about Howard's mother.. it makes sense. it's about a deep love that has been lost, but will never be forgotten. so his mother died, and he wrote this amazing song in her memory.

Rose Of Sharon | Reviewer: Jack | 5/9/10

Hasn't anyone taken the title into consideration??? Rose of Sharon is a lost love, from a book about lost hope & what matters when such is lost called "The Grapes of Wrath" by Steinbeck.... One should read it to understand about "this" songs loss....

Rose of Sharyn: Jesus. | Reviewer: KSE4L1F3 | 2/24/10

The song is speaking about a life without Jesus, "I mourn for those who never knew you!" this could imply that Howard had lost someone dear to him (either his mother or wife) who did not come to know Jesus. But even in sorrow there is still a glimmer of hope, atleast that is what I believe Howard was trying to convey. Rose of Sharyn is another name for Jesus. There are hundreds of names for Jesus.

Nope, the rose of sharon is this.....for sure | Reviewer: james flud | 1/28/10

it is about losing the love of his life, and he gets the rose of sharon. which is kicked out of her life, and or, "cast into the fire." it is like a rose that the mafia gives to people before they kill them, but its just the countdown to destroy yourself basically..."KillSwitch Engage" haha, get it?

The "Rose" | Reviewer: koizumi | 10/23/09

I know that there are a lot of discussions about the Rose of Sharyn being a religious reference - and that's cool, but I feel more strongly that the image here is about the loss of his mother. If you look at the lines "It won't be long, we'll meet again; Your memory is never passing; It won't be long, we'll meet again; My love for you is everlasting" - it really speaks out to me as the love a child has for a parent. Thinking about the sacrifice and effort, and the realization that someone irreplaceable has been taken.

However, the lyrics reflect that death does not mean total separation - there is comfort in the memories of that person, and there is also the ultimate reality that when we die, we all become the same - if a line could be drawn definitively between life and death.

I'm not a religious person at all, but the religious connotations are there if you really want to see them. There is no single correct interpretation.

I always love how KSE has songs like this that waver back and forth between chaos, order, and comfort. You can hear a lot of similar compositional patterns in songs like End of Heartache, When Darkness Falls, and Arms of Sorrow to name a few. I always use KSE as the definitive example to show people indifferent to metal that it isn't a mess of notes with screaming. Metal can be just as artistic as any other variety of music - you just have to receptive to it.

BINGO! | Reviewer: Jed | 9/22/08

what it means | Reviewer: donny | 7/16/08

lol for all the people arguing about what it means, sons are supposed to be about what the mean to you so it can be about anything, theyre written for people to be able to relate to, yes they usually do have a very big meanny with the writer but its about what it means to you
