Rooster Lyrics - Alice In Chains

Review The Song (38)

Ain't found a way to kill me yet
Eyes burn with stinging sweat
Seems every path leads me to nowhere
Wife and kids, household pet
Army green was no safe bet
The bullets scream to me from somewhere

Yeah they come to snuff the rooster
Yeah here come the rooster, yeah
You know he ain't gonna die
No, no, no, you know he ain't gonna die

Here they come to snuff the rooster
Ah yeah, yeah
Yeah, here come the rooster, yeah
You know he ain't gonna die
No, no, no, you know he ain't gonna die

Walkin' tall machine gun man
sponsored links
They spit on me in my home land
Gloria sent me pictures of my boy
Got my pills 'gainst mosquito death
My buddy's breathin' his dyin' breath
Oh god please won't you help me make it through

Yeah they come to snuff the rooster, ah yeah
Yeah here come the rooster, yeah
You know he ain't gonna die
No, no, you know he ain't gonna die

Ok so this is late but I can say as a fellow soldier I've never heard a veteran of a war talk bad about there country or blame the hardships on there country the truth of the matter is once you deploy the only thing that matters is survival yours and the people around you the fighting for freedom part usually comes from the people who've never experienced war or its effect so they'll never understand the mindset of the people who have and as for me the rooster signifies the coming of morning and to snuff the rooster means to stop morning from coming in the song his buddies dying he's going through all these hardships he doesn't want time to flow and just like tomorrow always comes the rooster always crows and nobody can stop it which is why the rooster never dies

WTF? | Reviewer: Rain | 5/18/12

Why there are so many reviews about America being good, or America being bad, or whatever? And I didn't quite get the message of the last one, about WW II... Don't know, for me this song is just a curse to all wars, to all this cruelty and all people suffering from it, Americans, Vietnamese, whoever... And no song said it better, really.

ROOSTER | Reviewer: bl | 5/6/12

I'm not sure if this has been posted yet, but the Rooster is America, and the song is made to be set in the Vietnam war. There was no word for Eagle in the Vietnamese language, so they called us the Roosters (in their own language of course). And while we're on the subject, is America the best damned thing that's happened to the world? Certainly not. Ask yourselves though, if we had not become involved in World War II (and subsequently the aftermath effects of Vietnam and Korea as part of the Cold War)would Hitler rule the world? The fascist regime would not have stopped at Jews. The Jewish people were the first on the list, with Catholics, Orthodox, Protestants, Islam, all on the list to follow. Sure, we as a nation have not done the greatest things in our past. But I'll be damned if anyone in this world would rather have Nazi Germany as the world's superpower.

Let the haters be...The truth is young American men an women join our armed forces for many reasons-funding for advanced education-a job-to make a difference-support the freedom of mankind...

When things are bad and the going is tough in my civilian life, I often hum this song to myself..It reminds me of my time in the Corp when everything was struggle, endless marches to a battle that you had to endure, training and discipline were the rule of the day. Here it really not that bad...

This is an anthem to all soldiers who just want to make it through.

Godspeed to all military men that walk post or on missions this day, keep fighting the good fight until worldwide peace and freedom is achieved.

People...please | Reviewer: ... | 6/13/11

Alright...people from other countries besides the US....
Please, settle down. I'm an American and honestly the way things have been going lately, I'm not exactly proud of us. We do take pride in what we do but does that make us bad people?? you guys have rights too..I understand that..but we are out there to make a difference in OUR country. We aren't affecting you by saying things like "I love our country" or "thank you to all the soilders" so just shut the hell up and stop complaining about us expressing our gratitude to our heroes.

Now, Layne, we love you brother and to left us way to early....Jerry and the guys remember you everyday I'm sure and we all miss you greatly...thank you for your work you left the world and we can't wait to sit down with you one day :)

Hey U S A, I never said Argentina didn't fight in wars!! But I don't agree with that either!! Violence and murder is no way to solve conflicts, you should be knowing it since you've the most powerful army in the fucking world and yet you have so many economic and social problems. I don't vindicate any form of murder, there are no excuses!! Yes we had wars. One against Paraguay, leaving almost no men alive, genocide!!! Another against England for the Falklands (which correspond to our territory), but under a dictatorship that forced young people to die so they could keep their power, another genocide!!!

There isn't something like fair and unfair wars, just massive assasination, we all are civilized human beings and have the same aptitude for dialogue. Hope you ever see it clear.

Flowerqangl... Because we all took an oath my brother. We agreed to defend our country from all enemies "foreign and domestic". While some may say that the current regime represents a domestic threat most of us take the stand that we have to give some time for the political process to work before taking up our arms against out own countrymen. Treason is a very dangerous thing.. The only crime listed in th constitution, along with it's punishment, death.

And yes since layne is gone now in 2002 the band is not the same. We went to a show several months ago when they were touring again and it was both a shame and a pity, they didn't even mention him.

Thanks everyone!

Marooned | Reviewer: Payman | 10/11/10

The band used to be out of question when he was singing with his indisputable voice!!
hence Layne's death the band lost it's standard shape.tell the truth I just listen to the songs that are sung with his voice.not the covered ones!
i dont know whether call it a shame or pitty!

happening again BUT SLOW MO | Reviewer: Flowerangl | 8/31/10

Any of you middle-class folks like myself who have been supporting the hypocrisy delineated in this song are feeling it 10 fold nowadays. Isn't it COOL? Sorry, but i think the poor boys "following orders" should have turned their weapons on the "powers that be" who put them in that position in the first place, once they got home. It's not gettin any better folks. It started then...and here we go.

This is only a tribute song to Jerry Cantrell's dad who served in the vietnam war. A son who is extremely proud of his father with a childlike opinion that "he aint gonna die". "Army green", just as Air Force blue, Navy blue, or any other american fighting force, is "no safe bet" as Jerry puts it. His dad endured, "Oh God please wont you help me make it through". Great song Jerry! God bless you, your dad, and America!

Does anyone see the point of this song?? | Reviewer: Alex G. | 6/18/10

Everyone here is arguing about America being the best, but this is pretty much the opposite of the song. It's showing the dissent of the soldiers in a war that was highly unnecessary.. in fact The Gulf of Tonkin incident was made up by the government to further the war. I think that our country has made lots of progress, but the government is definitely corrupt etc... 9/11, Carlyle Group, poppy fields in Afghanistan, rich mineral mines, etc. What is happening today is like what was happening back in Viet Nam, just on a different scale.

Hey argentina, I guess you had to get your green card as it shows by how frustrated you are by your dipictions of your own inner self beliefs which seem to me as self rationalizing. I feel sorry for you representing a country that has fought in many wars, (something you have NO clue about), and your education shows this. Maybe you like real Americans should do a little bit of research before you show your true feelings. Anybody else feel like someone is frustrated waiting to do a terrorist threat?
i can't say welcome to America to you SCUM!!!!

Steady Patron | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/15/10

Just want you guys to know, im from America.... And i couldn't have said it any better.... There are some pretty stupid fucking americans here... After looking on the internet i found out the song was about his father when he went to Vietnam.... Gloria is his mother.... His father was nicknamed the rooster.... Pay attention to the fucking song.... They even have interviews where the lead singer TELLS you what the fucking song is about...

American's are pretty dumb really, most just repeat what they here their parents say and others, then pass it on to their children, and it goes on and on. Kind of like the racism problems we have in America and most religious views. Most Americans are too dumb to open their eyes and see the world in their own view and think for themselves. Hold nothing against them, they're just ignorant to the truth or do, I don't care.
Whoever believes "Ignorance is Bliss" Well let me say it so people under stand. You are in the matrix and need to learn about the real world where foreigners aren't all evil and America's not as free as you truly believe

How the f | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/30/10

How the f*ck did you come out with the war sh*t? Let me say something. I'm from Argentina and I would like to talk to all these idiot Americans. I'm not being racist, I know there are smart people in USA. I also know there are assholes who don't want to hear anything unpleasant about the greatness of their nation, or their ideas of how the whole world diserves to be subordinate and repeatedly crushed by your irreproachable military forces. Sorry to burst your bubble, but we're people with rights and laws just like you're, so we're kinda sick of such attitude, attitude you dare to VINDICATE! Does this government (and many others) think they can blow up all around just because they can, and then tell their own people they're defending their country, freedom and crappy stuff? You need to start thinking a little better, 'cause it doesn't work that way. Read Lucy's message and try to understand her opinion, rather than label her with your ugly names as usual. I'm sure a lot of people will call me now chicano m*therfucker, and criticize my grammar of something, though I'm not from Mexico -not even near- and you can get my point perfectly, but anyway you don't f*cking care about the rest of the world. You have never did.
