Roman Candle Lyrics

Performed by Elliott Smith
Review The Song (7)

He played himself
Didn't need me to give him hell
He could be cool and cruel to you and me
Knew we'd put up with anything
I want to hurt him
I want to give him pain
I'm a roman candle
My head is full of flames
I'm hallucinating
Hallucinating
I hear you cry
Your tears are cheap
Wet hot red swollen cheeks
Fall asleep
I want to hurt him
I want to give him pain
I'm a roman candle
My head is full of flames
I want to hurt him
I want to hurt him
I want to hurt him
I want to give him pain
Make him feel this pretty burn

Emo wasn't so bad until Mtv and Co. caught on. In fact, who can dis a band or musician for displaying emotion in their music, that's what most of us want right? I guess the key is that the emotion is real and not created just for the market... Jesus, this song is wicked, it makes me feel so dark and awesome.

one of the things that makes the greats so amazing is the way their music has such a distinct sound. elliott smith's guitar is unmistakable. It is so fluid and smooth and soft and clever. this song provides some of the best imagery of all of his stuff. The low D he hits near the end of the song really sounds like a candle melting. its unbelievable. when i play this song on my guitar i just hear how empty i sound compared to him. it's beautiful nonetheless.

silly | Reviewer: bob | 4/12/09

emo is silly. elliott's music is hardly the childlike whine-fest that is sold to teenagers as "emo". elliott's insight was practically transcendental, and his ability to straddle the border between hope and despair, and render for our ears the best and gentlest parts of his struggles, elevates him into a category beyond any such ridiculous pop-genres of Today; his songs will be around long after we have suppressed our maudlin memories of emo. god bless him.

While elliott smith's music is "emotional," it's not what would be considered "emo music" as far as the genre's sound goes... At least in my opinion. Who am I? Nobody... So then you may as well forget you read this. That's all I have to say. In any case, he is not emo music, but his music is emotionally charged and very sombre in a guilty pleasure sort of way.

First let me start off by saying I hate emo music. But I don;t consider this emo, he isn't whining about his girlfriend breaking up with him or his parents not loving him or stupid stuff like that. This guy knew enough pain to fill 100 albums about it. That is why I love these songs.

I've been on a elliot binge he's lovely it so weird to be able to miss someone you only know through there music and lyrics. The success of his vulnerability is amazing in this song its one of the many songs of his that gets stuck in my head.

I wish he were still around.

Elliott Smith was probably the most amazing artist ive come across... i dont do emo dramatic music for the most part. i listen to metal. but when i came across this man. something about his music... the pain in his voice... the anger and rage. it comes out in this song. this man was a true artist and this song was the most heart felt piece of art ive ever heard.
