Rime of the Ancient Mariner Lyrics - Iron Maiden
Review The Song (17)
Hear the rime of the ancient mariner
See his eye as he stops one of three
Mesmerises one of the wedding guests
Stay here and listen to the nightmares of the sea.
And the music plays on, as the bride passes by
Caught by his spell and the mariner tells his tale.
Driven south to the land of the snow and ice
To a place where nobody's been
Through the snow fog flies on the albatross
Hailed in God's name, hoping good luck it brings.
And the ship sails on, back to the North
Through the fog and ice and the albatross follows on.
The mariner kills the bird of good omen
His shipmates cry against what he's done
But when the fog clears, they justify him
And make themselves a part of the crime.
Sailing on and on and north across the sea
Sailing on and on and north 'til all is calm.
The albatross begins with its vengeance
A terrible curse a thirst has begun
His shipmates blame bad luck on the mariner
About his neck, the dead bird is hung.
And the curse goes on and on AND ON at sea
And the thirst goes on and on for them and me.
"Day after day, day after day,
we stuck nor breath nor motion
as idle as a painted ship upon a painted ocean
Water, water everywhere and
all the boards did shrink
Water, water everywhere nor any drop to drink."
There calls the mariner
There comes a ship over the line
But how can she sail with no wind in her sails and no tide.
See...onward she comes
Onward she nears out of the sun
See, she has no crew
She has no life, wait but there's two.
Death and she Life in Death,
They throw their dice for the crew
She wins the mariner and he belongs to her now.
Then...crew one by one
they drop down dead, two hundred men
She...she, Life in Death.
She lets him live, her chosen one.
"One after one by the star dogged moon,
too quick for groan or sigh
each turned his face with a ghastly pang
and cursed me with his eye
four times fifty living men
(and I heard nor sigh nor groan)
with heavy thump, a lifeless lump,
they dropped down one by one."
The curse it lives on in their eyes
The mariner he wished he'd die
Along with the sea creatures
But they lived on, so did he.
And by the light of the moon
He prays for their beauty not doom
With heart he blesses them
God's creatures all of them too.
Then the spell starts to break
The albatross falls from his neck
Sinks down like lead into the sea
Then down in falls comes the rain.
Hear the groans of the long dead seamen
See them stir and they start to rise
Bodies lifted by good spirits
None of them speak and they're lifeless in their eyes
And revenge is still sought, penance starts again
Cast into a trance and the nightmare carries on.
Now the curse is finally lifted
And the mariner sights his home
spirits go from the long dead bodies
Form their own light and the mariner's left alone.
And then a boat came sailing towards him
It was a joy he could not believe
The pilot's boat, his son and the hermit,
Penance of life will fall onto him.
And the ship it sinks like lead into the sea
And the hermit shrieves the mariner of his sins.
The mariner's bound to tell of his story
To tell this tale wherever he goes
To teach God's word by his own example
That we must love all things that God made.
And the wedding guest's a sad and wiser man
And the tale goes on and on and on.

Only the best for daddies only little girl (rolls eyes) | Reviewer: Lexie onyx | 3/7/11
I've loved this song since as long as I can remember I'm only 16 my self but my daddy has gave me all of the best music to listen to lol... iron maiden ,def lepperad ,kiss,Alice Cooper,Danzig,Pink Floyd and many more (these are my favs) I've had this music bread into me sing I was born and out of all of his kids I'm the only one who shares his taste in music (all six our boys others than me I'm his only girl) so naturally I love iron maiden but this song is my favorite.... now if I could only remember who sings the song about the trees?...
utter wowness | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/6/10
this song, as many other ones by iron maiden, is simply ear orgasms. from the way the instruments all work together, or how they incorporate the actual lyrics from the original shows how only iron maiden can be musically awesome

I defy anyone to find an artist who has based a song so closely on an epic poem. Apart from maybe Dylan, I can't think of anyone so literature-savvy. Not a huge Maiden fan (yet), but this song is a great one. Then again, I seem to have a strange penchant for epic, 10-minute-plus songs.
Still a great song! | Reviewer: Wayne | 11/2/09
First listened to this over 20 years ago. Back then, it encouraged me to read STC's poem again, and also do research on him. Now in the present and listening to it again, I feel both are classics. Great song, great poem, but an even greater morality! CHEERS!
iron maiden's ...rime of the ancient mariner! | Reviewer: mike hartley | 4/15/09
there are 3 songs that i consider, truly, incredible...this is at the top of my list. i can listen to this song over and over and over again. i heard it for the first time when i bought their album when it was first released, and have never tired of it. every cd that i create has this song on it. they did the Samuel Taylor Coleridge poem justice as only they can...The poem itself was my favorite poem when i was a teen. when they made it into a song...wow, bonus! this song is even better live! i know, hard to believe. all you who are too young to remember this when it first came out...welcome to the family dudes! Maiden Rules!
Always have, Always will! Up the Irons!
The Best Heavy Metal Song Anyone can ask for!!! | Reviewer: Miguel Lozano | 4/1/09
Man, this song could put anyone in a good mood, and the way that they took the words from the original poem and put it into a nice song, it is just proof that Iron Maiden are geniouses! I love that that band!
UP THE IRONS!!!!!!!!
not long enough | Reviewer: booboocam1 | 1/1/09
I absolutely love the song, I'm a huge Maiden fan and this is their best. For those who appreciate it I think you can agree that the song could go on for another 10 minutes and would still be great and easy to listen to.
It just leaves you wanting more.
Just my 2 cents

A level review | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/14/08
We were impressed by the multimodality of the transformation. The song emphasises the epic ballad form of the original poem. It is clear to identify the features which originate from the poem the song is "based on" - note the correct use of English. However, we feel that Iron maiden have neglected to transform the supernatural and "other worldly" aspects of the poem which add an extra layer of meaning.
