Angels on the sideline,
Puzzled and amused.
Why did Father give these humans free will?
Now they're all confused.
Don't these talking monkeys know that Eden has enough to go around?
Plenty in this holy garden, silly monkeys
Where there's one you're bound to divide it right in two.
Angels on the sideline,
Baffled and confused.
Father blessed them all with reason,
And this is what they choose?
Monkey killing monkey killing monkey over pieces of the ground.
Silly monkeys.
Give them thumbs, they forge a blade,
And where there's one they're bound to divide it right in two.
Monkey killing monkey killing monkey over pieces of the ground.
Silly monkeys.
Give them thumbs, they make a club to beat their brother down.
How they've survived so misguided is a mystery.
Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability
To lift an eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here.
Gotta divide it all right in two.
Fight till they die over sun, over sky,
They fight till they die over sea, over air,
They fight till they die over blood, over love,
They fight till they die over words, polarizing.
Angels on the sideline again,
Benched along with patience and reason.
Angels on the sideline again,
Wondering where this tug of war will end.

Zilla... know your Maynard history.
10,000 part one and two are both in reference to the passing of his mother. 10,000 days adds up to roughly 27 years. That was the amount of time she spent on this earth from the time she had her stroke until the time she died.
Part one is him letting go. Two is about her ascension, going before God and demanding her wings for being as devout in her faith during life.
Actually ....... "talking monkeys" and "tug of war" is a reference to a movie - I'll let you figure which one. The story has to do with an ongoing battle in heaven started by Arch Angel Gabriel. See Gabriel jealous that God gave souls to humans - aka "talking monkeys" and he is rather pissed off about it. So much that he started a war in heaven and created a stale mate. No souls will ascend until it is resolved - so they all remain here. "Right in Two" is referencing the division of the two sides of the battle. On one side you have the angels loyal to Gabriel and on the other you have the angels loyal to God. The two sides have been battling for at least a couple millennium. You all have read into this way too much. I wonder what you think 10,000 days is about? I'll give you a hint - his name is Judas.
Biblical | Reviewer: Alypius | 10/14/09
It's totally biblical.. except that we weren't 'blessed' with reason.. it's a curse. Eve was deceived by the serpent and ingested the forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge. It was in a sense, the first act of evil that has doomed us all.
After this happened, man - as a species - fell and was forced to find their own placement in existence.. we got the boot out of Eden. God stepped out of direct contact humanity.. the 'angles on the sideline'... we are confused.. and fight over passing things "Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability
To lift an eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here."
Saint Augustine's idea of anti materialism was that all objects are passing, and in order to love them properly we must love their creator.. aka God. Humans are "repugnant" because we forget that there is a higher power. Neo Platonism has the idea that the human soul is actually two souls.. one looking up to it's origin from the one (christians call this God) and the other looking down on materials.. being distracted by materials and allowing the higher soul to forget it's origin. We are distracted enough to kill eachother... I think the song might be referring directly to the Gaza strip in Izrieal, which is the claimed Holy Land of two major Judaic religions; Judaism and Islam. Initially Christianity, Judaism, and Islam were all just Judaism.. then differences arose and they are what they are today.
We are all from the same source, regardless of beliefs... We are all just 'silly monkeys' because we cannot use our 'reason' to see that the only way to live harmoniously is to accept a certain degree of tolerance of diversity.. whether it be race, religion, personal conduct... whatever.
But this will never happen, because were all just fucking 'silly monkeys' who like to kill each other over what is believed to be owned.
Don't be daft, it's obviously referring to biblical belief that god created the angels, and then man. Man was given free will and reason, angels were expected to do as he ordered. They watch on the sidlelines while we toss it all up the wall, baffled that god would give free will to us in our imperfection, and not to the angels, who would (probably) not fuck it up.
We've pissed on our gifts... | Reviewer: Govern Thyself | 7/23/09
When I consider the meaning of this song, I am reminded of the words of Galileo Galilei: "I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with senses, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use..."
Despite mankind's seemingly boundless potential to exhibit reverence for nature, to live sustainably, and to create a world as close to "heaven" as humanly possible (which, incidentally, I believe to be part of our purpose on this plane) we continue to relegate ourselves to greed and jealousy and hatred.
I imagine the "angels on the sideline" could either be entities or spirits watching over us, but unable to act within our realm of existence due to our gift of free will, or humans themselves who have a positive net effect on the world, but are essentially impotent in the face of so much corruption and evil, who despite their best efforts, can only really wait for everyone else to "wake up."
The point is, we're fuckin' up. Again, despite all our potential, we continue to act like goddamn monkeys, and for those of us truly paying attention, it is soul-crushingly disturbing and deeply disconcerting.
divisions | Reviewer: Andy | 7/18/09
I think this song is about the needless divisions formed by man in this world. What good is there in breaking up mankind into different factions and countries than to start wars? The point of the song IMO is that we're all in this together despite what area of the world we happened to be born in...so let's work together instead of against each other.
Just listening to this song again for the first time in a while. Another possible interpretation is that dividing "Right in Two" is alluding asexual reproduction - and that our actions are so un-evolved that we're bound to just start dividing like single celled organisms.
Perhaps more than man? | Reviewer: Rowan | 7/11/09
This song strikes me as one that doesn't directly deal with how selfish man is and always will be, rather the view that "angels" must truly have on us. The idea is that angels embrace perfection once the souls of the dead are admitted to heaven, and in their perfection they would forget the folly that they may have faced during life (i.e - the entire thing: they would only know the life re-given to them).
It's believed that angels look down on us and smile when they see our good deeds and such. That's what we've come to tell each other.
I feel that this song takes a more literal route with its lyrics. I think it takes those ideas of how angels view us in such a positive light and shakes them out, feeding bare logic to the belief.
That we take the lines of spiritual belief and the plane of physical manifestation and cut them right in two.
each time i hear this song i sort of undrestand something or maybe face something they right.. that`s the worst part.. this is my favorite song ... is just that everytime i hear it i.. sort of.. go away in my mind only focusing on every single cord...

Great song. The song is clearly about universal oneness and how human beings must divide the universe into 2 seperate, managable parts by labling and judging in order to make sense of things. We need enemies, we need friends, we need right and wrong, black and white. It simplifies things for us.
