Once there was a man
who had a little too much
time on his hands.
He never stopped to think that he was getting older.
But when his night came to an end,
he tried to grasp for his last friend
and pretend that he could wish himself health on a 4-leaf clover.
He said: Is this the return to Oz?
The grass is dead, the gold is brown
and the sky has claws.
There's a wind-up man walking round and round.
What once was emerald city's now a crystal town.
3 'o' clock in the morning,
You get a phone call from the Queen
With a hundred heads
she says that they're all dead.
She tried the last one on, it couldn't speak, fell off
and now she just wanders the halls
thinkin' nothing, thinkin' nothing at all...
She says: Is this the return to Oz?
The grass is dead, the gold is brown
and the sky has claws.
There's a wind-up man walking round and round
What once was emerald city is now a crystal town.
The wheelie's are cutting pavement
and the Skeksis at the rave meant to hide,
deep inside their sunken faces and their wild rolling eyes,
But their callus words reveal
that they can no longer feel
Love or sex appeal.
The patchwork girl has come to cinch the deal
To return to Oz, we fled the world with smiles and clenching jaws
Please help me friend from coming down
I've lost my place and now it can't be found
Is this the return to Oz?
The grass is dead, the gold is brown
and the sky has claws.
There's a wind-up man walking round and round
What once was emerald city is now a crystal town.

Review about Return To Oz Brilliance | Reviewer: Steven | 8/6/09
When I was a bit younger, I heard Laura and saw the video. I thought my mind had exploded from the scale and surreal style. This band has grown in my eyes to be experts at that. I want to right an Oz story almost purely because this song makes me want to...
Gotta love it!!
return to oz scissor sisters | Reviewer: paul | 7/15/09
what a fantastic human sensory feast! the sounds, whatever you may perceive are the fundamental meaning of the lyrics, and the pictures ,dark and brooding, that may be conjectured by this masterpiece of aural magic!
truly the sisters have an embodiment of elton, and freddy in their makeup, artistically, but also, pink floyd, and due to some chordal progression, i feel , the beatles, from the psychadelia that accompanied said same bands!
wonderful stuff!
My Take | Reviewer: Andy G | 1/22/08
It is about the meth problem but also draws comparison to Frank OZ's Return to oz. so they are both fools who wrote those reviews. The story of return to oz is about a land that was all glitz and glamour being taken over by a dark force with many faces turning everything in it's wake bad. It compares this to the drug problem in San Fran as the reference to the gay community has always been to the wizard of oz so the comparison is quite profound.
return to oz | Reviewer: Rose | 12/2/07
this song is about the frank oz - return to oz. not a meth addiction lmfao.
the giveaway being the NAME of the song and FILM being the same. and all the references to the characters the queen with many heads, the freaky wheelers *shivers* and the windup walking man ticktock!
A beautiful, tragic song about drug use ripping a community apart. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/8/06
Actually it's a song about crystal meth addiction. The lines about /"clenching jaws and wild, rolling eyes"/ and /"that they can no longer feel/
Love or sex appeal."/ exactly describe the results of sustained meth use. I'd extrapolate that the references to Skeksis are intended to conjure "the Dark crystal", i.e crystal meth.
Scissor Sisters 'Return to Oz' | Reviewer: stella | 5/25/06
Scissor Sisters are camp, glam rock, disco, dance, obscure arty performance band that shot bang into the mainstreem with thankfull surprise.
'Return to Oz' is a track from their fabulous debut album 'Scissor Scisters'. This strangly touching song tells of someone dying and the feeling that causes and how things are too late if we waste time.
'There once was a man who had a little too much time on his hands/ He never stopped to think he was getting older/ But when his life came to an end/ He tried to reach for his last friend/ And tried to wish himself health on a four leaf clover.
The title is obvious references to the 'Wizard of Oz' sequal, 'Return to Oz' (little to do with the book, more so of the film starring a young Fairuza 'The Craft' Balk). The use of the film's narritive adds a spectrum of colour to the song.
'Got a phone call from the queen with a hundred heads/she says that they're all dead/ she tried the last one on, couldn't speak, fell off and now wanders the hall/ feeling nothing, feeling nothing at all.
Henson fans will notice references to his classic 'Dark Crystal'.
'..And the Skeksi's are parading them to hide/Deep inside their sunken faces and their wide rolling eyes/ but their callous words reveal/ that they can no longet feel/ no sex appeal, the patchwork girl has come to sinch the deal.'
The song delivers in like an antham with a killer almost Queen meets Elton vibe.
'Is this the return to Oz/the grass is dead,/the gold is brown and the sky has claws claws/ there is a wind up man running round and round/ in once was Emrald City is now a crystal town'.
