I would have to imagine that it was not included on "thirteen tales.." because it simply did not fit with the overall feel of the album, but that does not diminish how brilliant of a song this is. The Dandy's essentially wrote two versions of this song, the other being a slower, more stripped down version called "Lance". Both are brilliant, and it may have been a wiser move to have released the two versions as a split single- but instead they were relegated to being bonus tracks on the "Bohemia Like You" cd singles. Listening to "Retarded", especially, recalls the height of British psychedia like the very best of the Dandy's music. It is faster paced and more aggressive than the tripped-out mind excursions of most psychedelia, and would have probably fit more cohesively within the context of the songs on "...Come Down". One of the special things about the track is that it contains everything that fans love about the Dandy's in one two and a half minute song. It's got those great harmony vocals, a keyboard solo by Zia, gorgeous production, and a great slice of lyrical wit from Courtney. And the song rocks, along a similiar vein as "Boys Better". The other side of the coin, is "Lance". This is the same tune, but played at a much slower tempo and without the searing guitars of "Retarded". The guitars here are played with restraint, with little, if any, distortion and never overpower the vocals. The track has a kind of mellow foot- tapping groove to it, and serves to highlight the great vocal stylings of the song. It is as solid a rendition as "Retarded", but at the same time completely different in its approach. Both are worthy of being set amongst the very best in the Dandy Warhols' catalog, and it is my hope that fans will seek these two songs out and discover exactly why that is for themselves.
