Rebellion (Lies) Lyrics - The Arcade Fire

Review The Song (44)

Sleeping is giving in,
no matter what the time is.
Sleeping is giving in,
so lift those heavy eyelids.

People say that you'll die
faster than without water.
But we know it's just a lie,
scare your son, scare your daughter.

People say that your dreams
are the only things that save ya.
Come on baby in our dreams,
we can live on misbehavior.

Every time you close your eyes
Lies, lies!
Every time you close your eyes
Lies, lies!

Every time you close your eyes
Lies, lies!
Every time you close your eyes
Lies, lies!
Every time you close your eyes
Every time you close your eyes
Every time you close your eyes
Every time you close your eyes

People try and hide the night
underneath the covers.
People try and hide the light
underneath the covers.

Come on hide your lovers underneath the covers
come on hide your lovers
underneath the covers.

Hidin' from your brothers
underneath the covers,
come on hide your lovers
underneath the covers.

People say that you'll die
faster than without water,
but we know it's just a lie,
scare your son, scare your daughter,
Scare your son, scare your daughter.
Scare your son, scare your daughter.

Now here's the sun, it's alright!
(Lies, lies!)
Now here's the moon, it's alright!
(Lies, lies!)
Now here's the sun, it's alright!
(Lies, lies!)
Now here's the moon it's alright
(Lies, lies!)

Every time you close your eyes
Lies, lies!
Every time you close your eyes
Lies, lies!
Every time you close your eyes
Lies, lies!
Every time you close your eyes
Lies, lies!

Every time you close your eyes

Every time you close your eyes

Every time you close your eyes

Lies, lies!

I love it!! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/18/11

I like the song alot. While you are sleeping, you have dreams of how wonderful things are but you wake up and it was just a lie.
The sound of the music is awesome.Sends chills down my spine.I remember when i first heard it,i was at work and HATING my job and life at the time.(I was a truck driver at the time) Now i work on a farm and i have the song in my ipod and love it,and just the sound of the music is kinda eerie sounding at night in the middle of a field in the pitch black dark. i love this song and listen to it all the time.

Come on baby in our dreams, we can live on misbehavior.... | Reviewer: a girl | 3/19/11

i agree with the ones who say it doesn't matter what the lyrics are REALLY about. they're beautiful. the song is amazing. the whole experience is haunting. i love arcade fire, how uncomfortable they look on the stage, how they used to dress up for they're early gigs and how every song is breaking my heart :) cheers

The way I see it | Reviewer: Tim M | 3/7/11

This song, to me, illistrates the band's viewpoints on society, how society generally operates in a dream state where the people are holding on to a comfortable norm, while supressing some of their innate feelings of what is outside of that comfortable norm. They are hiding under the covers from the fear of the dark (the powers that control them) and the light (the pain they will undergo if they choose to rebel against those powers and free themselves)... They are told if they stop dreaming they will die faster than without water, in other words, the comfortable life as they know it will end and they have trouble letting go of that, their parents pressure them to stay this way. Overall the song is meant to capture an adolesants struggles to come to terms with the world, if they keep dreaming they may never wake up and they will always be hiding

what i think | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/18/11

i think its about how people try to escape the reality of the world and that when the person closes their eyes they dont try to escape the reality of the world and they are just lying to themselves.

It's a metaphor | Reviewer: anonymous | 12/14/10

This song seems to be a metaphor where sleep stands for closing your eyes to the problems in the world. People go about in day to day life merely existing in a sort of dream world where everything's alright. The suburbs while it's their latest album is a really good example of where I'm coming from. You're all taking it too literally I think. No band out there honestly believes that sleeping is a harmful thing. I'm also surprised no one thought about the full title "Rebellion (Lies)" maybe hinting at something like opening your eyes and ignoring all of your "programming" (scare your son, scare your daughter) could actually prove worthwhile.... perhaps even rebellion to these old ideas of just going with the flow and happy days and what not? Those are my two cents, and I'm probably way off

truth maybe | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/8/10

i have a feeling this is a response implicitly to the major music industries advances on them. this was written as they were growing steam in the montreal music scene, so its possible. the singles album art features an all seeing eye and the lyrics make reference to closing one's eye. It all seems fairly seasoned with the same imagery found in countless other mainstream acts which drop masonic and illuminati symbolism.
just a guess though

Kinda happening to me now | Reviewer: Curly | 3/24/10

I've been depressed lately and have had insomnia and when I do get to sleep, I dream about wonderful things but when I wake up, I realize that everything was just a lie and my life is back to the way it was.

Lies | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/24/10

My view on the song is that it's about wanting to live through your dreams, and take a step back from reality. People, parents for example, will tell you that it is foolish to dream, and they will scare you with the 'truth' of reality.

frenchy | Reviewer: Aut bot | 2/16/10

No, It's actually about a girl's mother that got married to a french man 12 days after her divorce from her father. The mother refused to tell the other children that happens to be all boys... (brothers)

It doesn't have to mean anything ... | Reviewer: johnc | 2/12/10

I actually don't much care what the lyrics mean. I like
the way the song sounds, period. This group is breaking new
ground and it has enormous potential. The co-leaders - a guy
from Texas with a weak callow-youth voice, an inarticulate
keyboarderette from Montreal, a huge percussion and chorus presence
- somehow they have instincts that can stir the soul in this
song and some others. Deeply original - I just hope they can
hold it together.
