Prison Sex Lyrics - Tool

Review The Song (103)

It took so long to remember just what happened.
I was so young and vestal then,
you know it hurt me,
but I'm breathing so I guess I'm still alive
even if signs seem to tell me otherwise.
I've got my hands bound and
my head down and my eyes closed,
half-closed, wide open.

Do unto others, what has been done to me,
Do unto others, what has been done to you?

I'm treading water,
I need to sleep a while.
My lamb and martyr, you look so precious.
Won't you come on up closer,
close enough so I can smell you.
I need you to feel this,
sponsored links
I can't stand to burn too long.
Release in sodomy.
Oh, for one sweet moment I am whole.

Do unto you now, what has been done to me,
Do unto you now, what has been done?

You're breathing so I guess you're still alive
even if signs seem to tell me otherwise.
Won't you come on a bit closer,
close enough so I can smell you.
I need you to feel this.
I need this to make me whole.
Release in sodomy.
For I am your witness and
blood and flesh can be trusted.(X2)
And only this one holy medium brings me peace of mind.

Got your hands bound, your head down,
your eyes closed.
You look so precious now.

( Show me something
Thought I could make it end
Thought I could wash the stains away
Thought I could break the circle if I
Slipped right into your skin
So sweet was your surrender
We have become one
I have become my terror
And you my precious lamb and martyr.) *

I have found some kind of temporary sanity in this
shit, blood, and cum on my hands.

I've...come...round...full circle.
My lamb and martyr, this will be over, soon.
You look so precious.(X4)
You look so precious, now,
You look so precious...

The characters in the video are very interesting. If you watch them it is as if the music matches the characteristics of the characters throughout the video or certain parts. There are also parts to where it is like what the heck are they doing, or what is taking place? It is very interesting; they are like aliens or creatures from another planet. That is why their videos are so cool. They get you to where it is like, “Whoa, will watch that again.” “What was that…or what was that video about…?” They are different. Gets you to where you want to try and figure out what is taking place exactly in the video(s) with Tool. They have that little guy or man, looking for his legs or trying to get them, then there is that alien or space creature that is making him, has him like a pet. There are some pretty trippy parts in the video that get you watching it more or paying more attention to what is going on within the video.

Out with the old... | Reviewer: Wiard | 1/2/13

The listener IS the lamb and martyr. this is a universal experience of darkness that any skeptic, critic or human being can't help but empathize with. Within the first verse Maynard conveys his personal experience with abuse, and then in the chorus:
'For I am your witness and
blood and flesh can be trusted.(X2)
And only this one holy medium brings me peace of mind.'
He quotes Jesus, yet within a question of struggle over righteousness and vengeance, 'Do unto others, what has been done...?'
Finally, at the bridge, the music in a violent waterfall of rhythm whispers,
(So sweet was your surrender
We have become one
I have become my terror
And you my precious lamb and martyr.)
It is at this point where the music should have brutally raped away your evil. Each symbolic listener will understand that this song is for any who has experienced such abuse, or needs the release that only psychedelic metal can give. love awakening from the ashes to the sound of Tool.

The Truth | Reviewer: Helen | 12/19/12

"Prison Sex" is about a piece of Maynard's childhood. This is not about "rape in prison", as some would say.

This band has been mocked(like most), and some people have made remarks about this dark time in his childhood.

[Warning: This may be long, but, please, try and bear with me. I am very particular about what I write(because I am a poet). This means I will say how I feel.]

Maynard is a very intelligent man. Though some say by the way he preforms, he's immature. Do they not view the content of his songs or even think about them.

[Another Warning: I'm musically obsessed.]

Maynard is a true artist. Like him, I do art like that. [Type GhostlyHelen on Google and you should find my blog.] I am a poet, and I do write songs. I wish to be a musician as Maynard is as of now.

Back to the Topic:
"Prison Sex"
This is about his encounter or encounters with his abusive step father. If you look him up you will find out the type of abuse he suffered was indeed sexual.

Quoted Lyrics:
"I've got my hands bound and
my head down and my eyes closed,
half-closed, wide open."

Read closely it speaks of bondages, and fear.

"It took so long to remember just what happened.
I was so young and vestal then,
you know it hurt me,
but I'm breathing so I guess I'm still alive
even if signs seem to tell me otherwise."

Sometimes after trauma you don't remember it all. You forget. It eventually comes back to you.

"I have found some kind of temporary sanity in this
shit, blood, and cum on my hands."

He explained something the sick bastard did to him.

What I understand this was a cycle...This song tells me it was a cycle.

About abuse | Reviewer: nitrorabbit | 10/16/12

Hello, many of you wrote it is about child abuse, and also referred to an interview on youtube. Which I watched. And my conclusion is what I thought myself about the lyrics, aswell: it's about abuse. Period. Not just child abuse. Abuse in general. Because psychologically they all create a vicious circle. And recognising and breaking that circle is what this song addresses.

my interpretation | Reviewer: sandaman | 7/14/12

well so my comments will be very short is about child abuse and how the victim becomes in a child abuser this is the literal way maybe the point is how overcome this sort of things you can fallow the path of the abuser or brake the circle and make it end

Idiots | Reviewer: Jdjones298 | 1/11/12

Many of Maynards song (the majority at least) are open to interpretation. However, in some cases, such as this, the songs have a deliberate and specific purpose and meaning. This particular song deals directly with child abuse. This is not my, or anyone elses interpretation for speculation, this is straight out of the mouth of Maynard himself. The interview can be found on youtube for all you skeptics.

It means what YOU feel it means | Reviewer: Michelle | 12/29/11

In a dvd of a collection of videos (of APC) Narrated by the great Maynard James Keenan, he clearly states that the biggest part of his writing and poetry is the fact that every fan is different. Therefore, the meanings of his songs are for each individual in their own way. Obviously, the word "rape" is defined as having something taken from you. So, this can be translated into actual sexual abuse or it can be to someone, say myself, a way of saying that I loved someone with all my heart and he knew that. He took advantage of my trust and love and "raped" me of peace, happiness, and self-esteem. It can also be viewed in a political way as well as religious. WE ALL have been raped of something, and WE ALL have been guilty of continuing the cycle. What can I say... It's a sick, sick world.

Child Abuse | Reviewer: Devin | 12/26/11

It's quite obvious that this song deals with child abuse/rape. The title itself, "Prison Sex", implies rape of one form or another, and the victim cannot escape from it. "I was so young and vestal then, you know it hurt me," This section is from the child's point of view. "My sweet lamb and martyr, you look so precious," This is told from the adult's point of view, and it appears as though the adult has ideals that the child meets. "I need you to feel this," May imply that the perpatrator has some sort of sick affection that they wish was returned to them, but they are for naught. All in all, this guy's a pretty sick bastard, who's mind is fucked up so badly that he's created a fantasy that the child wants no part of. The same thing is often seen in cases of serial murderers and rapists. Their victims are usually people who meet the description of their twisted desires. This is what I leave you to think with.

SONG MEANING | Reviewer: Zerroa | 12/16/11

this song is talking about the repeating circle of rape of some sort..particuly about sodomy and the person is doing only what he knows has been done to him and he feels compelete in that one moment of relses..yes this can result in many things BDSM (Bondage, Displine, Domanite, Submissive, Sadistic, Masacites)((sry bout my spelling)) but most the time in this case most pplz will turn to BDSM because they think that they will be able to inflect what has been done to them onto others.. going into that with that mind frame is dangerus.. but the song is mainly talking about sodomy and the circle of doing onto others to feel real again...

Learn English | Reviewer: RVCJJ3J | 12/8/11

Harry you are such a dumbass, you replaced know with no. They both sound the same I KNOW, but they have very different meanings. It's called English. Also Harry you used a split infinitive in your review.

Awesomely disturbing | Reviewer: Ryan | 11/18/11

This song is disturbing but musically awesome, with great guitar work from all the guitars (I love Tool's use of bass), and stunning drum rhythms.

Clearly it is about sexual abuse. It is quite common for people who were abused at a young age to abuse others later in their life. The lyrics are harsh and gutteral and hard to swallow because they are uncompromising about the subject matter.

Vestal. adj.(can also be a noun)

1. Roman Mythology
a. Of or relating to Vesta.
b. Relating to or characteristic of the vestal virgins.

2. Chaste; pure. <---This is the meaning used in the song.

@ Harry, for someone who is so critical of others for their spelling, you used "no" instead of "know". Dumbass.

my meaning of prison sex | Reviewer: anonymous | 8/4/11

i personally feel it is about priests and alter boys. he speaks so much of god and all the human faults with god in most of songs. they feel whole with human urges but this the only way that they can fulfill them. the prison is within the priests who can be human

keep the reviews coming | Reviewer: Harry | 6/27/11

jdubb noone is claiming to be "prophets" of Tool. The fact of the matter is we will never no what the "meanings" behind Maynard's lyrics are, but on the flip side everyone has different interpretations on what they are. For me, I take the words literally...meaning dudes raping other dudes, then returning "the favor" to the "fresh meat". "I have come full circle" is the acceptance of the way of life in prison. Who gives shit if people are wrong when it comes to the their "meaning" of a song. I enjoy reading these reviews because it puts a different spin on a song. And learn how to spell JDUBB you dumb son of a bitch...."profit" is an earning of money....."prophet" is the word you are looking for. I know they sound the same but they have different meanings. As well, its "fathom" not "phathum" Its called the English language, learn it...........

A tidbit | Reviewer: RyanS | 6/15/11

I ran across a little tidbit somewhere (Wikipedia, maybe? I can't remember) that was discussing the production of Prison Sex. At the very end it stated (paraphrase) "According to Maynard, he never has forgiven his stepfather". If that statement wasn't complete BS, maybe there is some personal experience involved...

so good! | Reviewer: Velasquez | 3/25/11

look at the surface and you'll see a song about sexual abuse, look closer and you'll find your own, deeper meaning.. clearly there is description of the cyclical nature of abuse as Charles stated previously, and if you want to leave it at that, so be it.

just don't stress yourself out too hard about finding the author's intention or you'll miss the beautiful music.. tight drum composition especiallyy
