FORMED: 1978, London, England

After kicking around the US, UK and France for over a
decade, Chris Hynde finally wound up on the path that would
eventually lead her to the Pretenders. Towards the end of
1977, while living in squats around London, she met Tony
Secunda, onetime band manager of such acts as Steeleye Span
and The Move.

Chrissie, with Fred Berk (Johnny Moped) on bass and Nigel
Pegrum (Steeleye Span) on drums, recorded a few demos
including The Phone Call.

In March 1978, Tony arranged a meeting with Anchor Records'

This is one of my all time favorite songs! chrissie sings it SO beautifully. This song is SO amazing on so many different levels. I could never get enough of it! I've loved since it first came out. To feel this for someone is to truly love them, unconditionally. Like the love of your life, or a mother to her children, it is both for me in my life. Love The Pretenders & Chrissie forever!!!

this song is the song my fiancee and i are playing at our wedding as our first dance...its now our song. i love it so much, it seems to fit us so well, either from me to him, or him to me. its so beautiful, and its taken a long eight months to find a "perfect" song, and ive found it.

This is on of the most kick-ass bands that was around during the 80's. This song in particular has one of the best lines ever recorded, with "when you own a big chunk of the bloody third world, the babies just come with the scenery." This band could rock with the best of 'em. Drugs took thier toll on some members, unfortunatly, but Chrissy keeps making great music. Go Pretenders!

This is one of the greatest songs ever written. It is timeless, it feels personal, and it is so well worded that it gives me chills every time, even 5 years after buying the album.
