Prayer Of The Refugee Lyrics - Rise Against

Review The Song (219)

Warm yourself by the fire, son,
And the morning will come soon.
I'll tell you stories of a better time,
In a place that we once knew.

Before we packed our bags
And left all this behind us in the dust,
We had a place that we could call home,
And a life no one could touch.

Don't hold me up now,
I can stand my own ground,
I don't need your help now,
You will let me down, down, down!

Don't hold me up now,
I can stand my own ground,
I don't need your help now,
You will let me down, down, down!

Down!

We are the angry and the desperate,
The hungry, and the cold,
We are the ones who kept quiet,
And always did what we were told.

But we've been sweating while you slept so calm,
In the safety of your home.
We've been pulling out the nails that hold up
Everything you've known.

Don't hold me up now,
I can stand my own ground,
I don't need your help now,
You will let me down, down, down!

Don't hold me up now,
I can stand my own ground,
I don't need your help now,
You will let me down, down, down!

So open your eyes child,
Let's be on our way.
Broken windows and ashes
Are guiding the way.

Keep quiet no longer,
We'll sing through the day,
Of the lives that we've lost,
And the lives we've reclaimed.

Go!

Don't hold me up now,
I can stand my own ground,
I don't need your help now,
You will let me down, down, down!

Don't hold me up now,
I can stand my own ground,
I don't need your help now,
You will let me down, down, down!

Don't hold me up...
(I don't need your help, I'll stand my ground)
Don't hold me up...
(I don't need your help)
No! No! No!
Don't hold me up!
(I don't need your help, I'll stand my ground)
Don't hold me up!
(I don't need your help, I'll stand my ground)
Don't let me down, down, down, down, down!

Awesome Song :D | Reviewer: Luke, Obviously | 10/10/11

This song and Re-Education (Through Labour) are two of my favourite Rise Against songs, ALL of Rise Against's Songs have meaning if you listen to the lyrics, but just because yew dont understand the message hidden in their songfs, don't mean you CAN'T be a Rise Against fan, they are a brilliant band and actually know the meaning of writing good lyrics. Awesome :]

Pretty Obvious | Reviewer: Oliver | 10/8/11

This songs meaning is very straight forward and anti right-wing foreign policy (e.g.Australia turning back boats). The part which goes:
"We are the angry and the desperate,
The hungry, and the cold,
We are the ones who kept quiet,
And always did what we were told."
Basically this shows how these people (refugees) never did wrong and were born with these problems (hunger, cival war, poverty, etc..)thrust upon them, not of their own doing, showing they are people just like us, but in real need and deserve refuge in our country (where ever that may be). This next part:
"Don't hold me up now,
I can stand my own ground,
I don't need your help now,
You will let me down, down, down!"
is about pride and how refugees dont want to be treated like second rate human beings, as they are people just like me and you. The title being "Prayer of the Refugee" most probably relates to the fact that they want help but not your sympathy (which probably just comes from guilt) and to be treated like you and me so they can live just like we do.Thanks for reading thi, be good to know what others think about this song and its meaning :)

Artists | Reviewer: Jeff | 8/1/11

Band members(other than top 40) usually form because they believe in the same things (Politics,Families,Media, whatever)and write songs for themselves, not us. Fans are the ones who feel strongly that the band is vocalizing how they feel. If you don't think there is meaning to songs, you just aren't a fan of the band. I love Rise Against...if you don't,it's all good.

Don't rely on the authorities for your salvation | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/13/11

"Don't hold me up now, I can hold my own ground; I don't need your help now, you will let me down."

I think that summarizes the song nicely and concisely. There's no need for subtlety and innuendo when the message is so basic. Don't condescend to the people you're trying help, because they have pride too.

Amazing | Reviewer: Chriss | 1/31/11

The meaning of this song is that the people of America and other countries take everything for granted. We never think about the struggles of others who don't have a stable life and have been kicked out of their own home. The meaning is also that they are strong enough to try to fight for what they believe in and to try to get their lives back. Our country and others offer help but they don't want it or need it. This is my all-time favorite song and I listen to it every day to remind me of the countless others that struggle in life.

There is a meaning... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/21/10

OK, well first of all, let me state that I really like this song, my favorite Rise Against song and it's defiantly fighting for my favorite alltime song, it's that good.

And by the way, it does have the meaning, which translates to the video, where Tim (lead singer) has stated what the video at least represents and I'm willing to bet he wrote the song with the same intentions in terms of getting a message across.

Tim: A lot of what this video is talking about actually is fair trade and how it relates to us as American consumers. Places that we frequent(ly go to), places like you know this place right here (keep in mind the video is set in a big warehouse) and these products. What we wanted to get across in this music video as much as you could possibly get across in a music video if you could get a message across in a music video at all (is) the fact that traditional business models are flawed and the conventional business models that we use today are flawed in the sense that the price that we pay for products does not actually reflect the price of production of these products. These are prices that are kept below through various human rights violations...

So, I think that sums it up pretty well from the mouth of Tim Mcllrath himself.

wow | Reviewer: the man | 8/28/10

let me just say i am a big fan of rise againast but the only song that i think the lyrics even has a message to is hero of war and because that is just a story NO FUCKING HIDEN MEANING, and the government does lie

DUH! | Reviewer: Rose | 8/21/10

the message in this song is so obvious. The people od America need to wake up and stand up against all the lies the government are feeding us . And it also talks about America in a different time when and how now it is weaker and how people should keep quiet no longe as Risn Against has put it.

Holy Shit. | Reviewer: Shayna Arcer | 5/6/10

Is fighting politics/religion/the economy and debating the "point" of a song really the point of a LYRIC'S WEBSITE? I didn't realize I left sing365.com and ended up at debatepointlessgarbage.com.

You guys? It's a good song. Listen to it or not, like it or not, but keep your fighting for somewhere more appropriate.

man | Reviewer: watson | 4/16/10

man the reason why they do it is because they care about what happens and what is going to happen to us and try to change us humanity is changing and we are all maybe going to hell but at least people try to change the world

really?? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/9/10

dude, why add in all the political bullshit into comments?
It doesn't have to become some crazy ass argument about america and government. It's not a debate. If you want to argue, do it someplace where it means something, not on some internet forum. People think what they think about whatever. there's no point in arguing.

stupid fucking bullshit | Reviewer: MnMz4L1F3 | 3/13/10

What pisses me off is Peypey up there on his soapbox bitching about how unfair the world is. Really, it all comes down to the second law of thermodynamics. Without a constant input of energy, EVERYTHING EVENTUALLY GOES TO SHIT. And sooner or later, that energy flow gauge on life is going to go kaput. So ride it out, listen to the kickass music that less than 20% of bands these days can offer you, and quit your bitching.

The worldwide crisis. | Reviewer: Peypey | 2/17/10

The guys from Rise Aainst are open enviormental activists as well as humanitarians. Simply put, the song is meant to be an eye opener to those who don't understand what "made in America" truly means. It's in the lyrics "we've been pulling out the nails of everything you've known". We send jobs overseas and then take the credit. What the guys are trying to convey with this song is that America should do one of two things; continue this process with relentless greed or to stop and attempt to understand the plight of humanity. This world is spiraling into chaos at an alarming rate. Those who realize this are beginning to dismantle oppression piece by piece; nail by nail. This song is meant to get people to think about how they can help save what little humanity the world has left and rebuild it as well. If we all own up to our shortcomings, if we all understand that everyone is at fault, we can come together and turn back the apocalyptic clock that chimes loudly in our ears. But this is simply my opinion. For all I know it could simply be a giant middle finger to the government. We won't ever know unless we ask the writers ourselves.
