Popular Lyrics - Nada Surf

Review The Song (29)

Three important rules for breaking up
Don't put off breaking up when you know you want to
Prolonging the situation only makes it worse
Tell him honestly, simply, kindly, but firmly
Don't make a big production
Don't make up an elaborate story
This will help you avoid a big tear jerking scene
If you wanna date other people say so
Be prepared for the boy to feel hurt and rejected
Even if you've gone together for only a short time,
And haven't been too serious,
There's still a feeling of rejection
When someone says she prefers the company of others
To your exclusive company,
But if you're honest, and direct,
And avoid making a flowery emotional speech when you break the news,
sponsored links
The boy will respect you for your frankness,
And honestly he'll appreciate the kind of straight forward manner
In which you told him your decision
Unless he's a real jerk or a cry baby you'll remain friends

I'm head of the class
I'm popular
I'm a quarter back
I'm popular
My mom says I'm a catch
I'm popular
I'm never last picked
I got a cheerleader chick

Being attractive is the most important thing there is
If you wanna catch the biggest fish in your pond
You have to be as attractive as possible
Make sure to keep your hair spotless and clean
Wash it at least every two weeks
Once every two weeks
And if you see Johnny football hero in the hall
Tell him he played a great game
Tell him you liked his article in the newspaper

I'm the party star
I'm popular
I've got my own car
I'm popular
I'll never get caught
I'm popular
I make football bets.
I'm a teachers pet

I propose we support a one month limit on going steady
I think It will keep people more able to deal with weird situations
And get to know more people
I think if you're ready to go out with Johnny
Now's the time to tell him about your one month limit
He wont mind he'll appreciate your fresh look on dating
And once you've dated someone else you can date him again
I'm sure he'll like it
Everyone will appreciate it
You're so novel what a good idea
You can keep your time to your self
You don't need date insurance
You can go out with whoever you want to
Every boy, every boy, in the whole world could be yours
If you'll just listen to my plan
THE TEENAGE GUIDE TO POPULARITY

I'm head of the class
I'm popular
I'm a quarter back
I'm popular
My mom says I'm a catch
I'm popular
I'm never last picked
I'm a cheerleader chick

I'm the party star
I'm popular
I've got my own car
I'm popular
I'll never get caught
I'm popular
I'm a teachers pet
I make football bets.

This is your lord and savior speaking, and thy has a request to make of all adolescents of the earth. Please, do not follow this as a guide, but as a warning. You shall love thou partner, not as a game. Please, make this earth peaceful again.

This song is bad and you should feel bad. | Reviewer: Victor | 10/3/13

Probably the worst abomination of a song in recorded history. Whatever the point was the writer tried to make, he f*#(ed this up royally.

The ignorant will take this as re-affirmation of their ways.
The non-conformist will rebuke, and find disgust in people, or worse, convert to this atrocity.
The smart will try and debate it's irony or sarcasm, but for the most part this will be lost to petty bickering.
The dumb will embrace this with failure, and probably fall into depression.

I'm sorry Nada...You should take a 12 gauge to your head and do us all a creative f*#king favor.

I'm Popular Bitch, kiss my feet. | Reviewer: Everyone Is Ignorant | 6/17/13

I believe te meaning of this song is very easy to extract from the lyrics. The "narrator" of this song is being sarcastic. He is merely mocking the actions of the people that deme themselves popular. This actually a good representation of what the life of a teenager is like. Being caught up in dating and your physical appearance are a large part of many "popular" teenagers. I guess I'm not completely capable of what the teenage life is about tho. I'm 13. But this song is kickass, and very correct.

Duh | Reviewer: A person | 8/18/12

I'm with Reece. It's making a statement. If I tell you that nowadays, popularity is valued more than intelligence, and kindness, I wouldn't call it satire. They're making fun how popularity is perceived, but it's not satire.

yr all idiots (well, most of you) | Reviewer: not you | 11/27/11

Words are from an old "Ms. Manners" type of text from many many years ago. Its obviously satirical- if you think anything in the song is to be taken seriously, please PLEASE swallow a shot gun. Morons. How are you able to negotiate the sheets in the morning without crying for help? Bet you think Weezer's "Sweater Song" is a delightful tune about the pleasures of snug cardigan.

A rebuttal | Reviewer: Erik | 10/28/11

I'm sorry Reece but what you're saying is egregious and inflammatory. If you're saying nada surf wants us to take this song at face value then you're implying that they are infact beseeching us to abide a one month limit on dating? That sounds like population control to me. The part about girls' hair? Though it's a reasonable suggestion to wash your hair every two weeks is it a practice that really should be venerated? Society values popularity not eccentricity. If you really think you're better than someone who took art or played in the band because you played football then you're being very superficial. Notice how the cheerleading squad was so homogenous. Is that the way society is supposed to look? Maybe to the Aryan nation. All I really want to get across is football is cool, drama is cool, art is cool, and having a beard is cool. The only prerequisite for being cool is to have a value system and I think you may have touched on that. Word.

warped perspective | Reviewer: reece | 8/26/11

From where I'm sitting, this song shows what I've come to know on my own. The words aren't satire, they're quite sincere and the reason all the comments say this song is satyrical or whatever other bs is because society has warped your perception of the world. The majority of people think they were put on this earth to enjoy being polite and to become unique and to not care what other people think of them, and that being yourself and being expressive and creative is the best way to be human. Reality is that life is all one big popularity game, individualism only goes so far in life and ignoring the fact that you may just be a loser will never solve that problem. Popular people enjoy the benefit of having large contact networks, which means being able to get easy, high paying jobs, cheap places to live, deals on material goods and services. Society tries to teach us that we shouldn't bother people who are trying to be eccentric because they think it makes them cooler. If you are one of them, you're not hitting your goal, because honestly, what you are supposed to be doing is expressing yourself through spectacle. Wanna come back to the popular side? Use that creativity to make a spectacle that most people can enjoy. Or join a sports team. Sports isnt all that bad, it makes you more fit and it teaches you about teamwork which you will need to succeed at life. Cut your damn hair so you don't look like a hippie. Shave your beard. I never heard a girl say to her friends "wow, look at that guys sexy beard!" but I've heard about how disgusting they are. This song isnt satyre, its just a plea with everyone to value common sense over society's values. If you want that summed up, this song is serious, lose the beard, joint the football team, not the school band, try your best to get a car, don't go anywhere without pit stick, cut your hippie hair and sleep around. That's the best way to enjoy your teenage years because trust me, when you wind up working at a corner store for 10 years like on clerks you'll wish you played soccer or across instead of learning to paint. At least you will still have friends. And oh yeah, never try to have a kids until you're ready to give up the fun in your life so you can spend the rest of your life watching your kids have all the fun.

Hmmmm | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/25/11

One thing i don't understand about this song is the very beginning. it starts off pretty true (at least i hope) i mean besides the part about being friends after. I fully understand the rest of the song is definitely satire and sarcasm but the first part stumps me.

so true | Reviewer: not important | 11/7/09

okay i heard this song and agreed with it all so i guess this means that i'm a cry baby. but finding weakness in youself is not so bad if you never allow your self to act in the same way again. i like songs that have truth that you can relate to even if it reminds you of a mistake or a regret.

I love this song. | Reviewer: Ashley | 7/21/09

I love this song. Quite a lot. It made me laugh the first time I heard it. I, currently being in high school, do see this. I also find it funny how people commenting this did not catch onto the fact that this song is actually mocking the popular people. High school is such a silly, shallow place. (: Actually, the world is a silly, shallow place. I'm okay with that. Hehe!

Caricature | Reviewer: Understanding | 6/30/09

This song isn't really that hard to understand - it's a caricature of a misguided outlook on life where ones values are based on shallow, transitory matters which will have little to no bearing on life (and usually only do to those who delude themselves in to thinking anyone else holds such a high opinion of them). Take the line about, "Being attractive is the most important thing..." Hate to let those young enough not to realize it, your looks will fade with time, you will not stay as thin as you are now, you may loose your hair boys, you may loose your figure girls. Even if you maintain it for a time, eventually you will succumb to the same processes we all do in life. So, if you evaluate worth on narrow, narcissistic criteria which will wane with time, what do you have left? If you're an awful human being, your looks leave you, but who and what you are generally doesn't. Hence why he speaks most of the lines in a manic, crazed manner - it's a form of delusional behavior in the end.

Ok, some people don't understand.... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/30/09

This song is not about being popular as much as it is about people dating. It's definately not about how twisted popularity is, and I don't even think it's bad (but that's only my opinion). It's about breaking up with people, and even if it's a short amount of time, if you make the break up all emotional, it will make the person being dumped more emotional, and if you just say "It's over", it may seem insensitive, but people are very able to forget about it if you are that direct. I believe this is very true, I was in this same situation. And I guess the rest is about popularity, like tell Johhny Football Star he did great in the game, because that just means you're being nice to somebody who's popular, I mean if you're a dick to one of the most popular guys in school you're not really helping your image.

Really | Reviewer: noone | 5/26/09

person at the bottom. your not even a person, you embody everything i hate at society. Personally i hope u get over your self, if not i hope u realize u will fail at life. your not as good as u think u are and someday some ones going to knock u down.

Get a Clue! | Reviewer: Sharon | 12/31/08

This song is mocking the standards that tell us in order to be happy and content you have to pretend to be something you are not.
I really thought modern teens would be smart enough to get the POINT of the song. But, DUH... they think the song is promoting this kind of behavior.
Can't you see that the song is saying that you can hurt someone by being FAKE?????? That being popular is like being a little cookie cutter idiot????
GOD ALMIGHTY! I am 57 years old, and even I can understand that!
