Pogues Lyrics

As I had mentioned in the Nips bio, Shane started working
at a record store and sometimes filled in on guitar and
vocals for Spider Stacey's band, "The Millwall Chainsaws."

Around 1981 Shane was part of a nameless band led by a
school teacher, which was not going anywhere and soon hit a
dead end. Shane played bass, his good friend Jem Finer
played guitar and Chainsaws member Ollie played drums.

As time passed by Shane became more partial to Irish
traditional music than punk. In the company of his friends
(namingly Jem and Spider), More...

holy mother of god.

why does any of this matter?
why does it matter who was from where and who wrote and sang what part of the song?
who cares?

this is shameful all the way around.
just enjoy beautiful music when you hear it.

huge facepalm @ the slice of the human race exemplified by this comment page....

Among the very best of Christmas songs | Reviewer: Ritzmar
------ About the song Fairytale Of New York performed by Pogues

This track is a masterpiece, great poem, terrific interpretation, high quality and beautifully constructed melody, and a serious message.
I also recommend Donleavy's book of the same title, and also his first novel, 'The Ginger Man', where much of the atmosphere created by this song can be experienced at length and in depth.

Pogues were English and Irish | Reviewer: campbell
------ About the song Fairytale Of New York performed by Pogues

Jem Finer was English and was a founder member of the Pogues. The Pogues were a London band playing Irish-style music but were not all Irish, but no one cared.
Why does this matter? Because some people seem to want to think the English and Irish are completely separate and that what is good for one is bad for the other. This is nonsense - and the Pogues prove it.

Not all Irish... | Reviewer: Mari
------ About the song Fairytale Of New York performed by Pogues

This song - to which I've sung the female part many a time with my old band - was written by an English man (Jem Finer) and an Irish man (Shane MacGowan) and sung by an Irish man (Shane MacGowan again) and an English woman (Kirsty MacColl, and yes, she was English; she was brought up in bloody Croyden!. So, can we stop any more mentions of this, má tá ceist agam nicely, le do thoil?

This Christmas song brought the house down and cheered us all up! | Reviewer: Catherine
------ About the song Fairytale Of New York performed by Pogues

I actually had to sing this at a Christmas Carol concert at the British Army unit where I work. I was accompanied by one of the officers (recently returned from a tour in Afghanistan) We brought the house down! ) It certainly had a very uplifting effect on everyone ! It may not be your typical 'Christmas, happy jolly jingle. But we Brits love irony - and this song has become a real Christmas classic. Love it or hate it - this one is here for the duration.

I love hearing this song - its addictive to me, and the tune stays in my head for ages after hearing it. @greeg mckenzie your review is sad, i suspect you are a sad lonely little thing also. This is real, it speaks truths, and it tells a story that needs to be told. I'm no pogues fan, but i love this poem..

Classic! | Reviewer: Kay
------ About the song Fairytale Of New York performed by Pogues

This is one of the most honest Christmas songs ever. We all play happy families at Christmas & put up with utter crap from people who are supposed to love us. There are also the simple, amazing moments that remind us what it's all about & make us wish we hadn't fallen, once again, for the commercialism & sentimental rubbish. The lyrics might shock some people but the melody & harmony are beautiful, perfectly contrasting both sides of the chocolate coin.
