We sent out the S.O.S. call.
It was a quarter past four, in the morning
When the storm broke our second anchor line.
Four months at sea. Four months of calm seas {only}
To be pounded in the shallows off the tip of Montauk Point.
They call 'em rows. They travel fast and alone.
One hundred foot faces of God's good ocean gone wrong.
What they call love is a risk,
'Cause you will always get hit
Out of nowhere by some wave
And end up on your own.
The hole in the hull defied the crew’s attempts,
To bail us out.
And flooded the engines and radio,
And half buried bow.
Your tongue is a rudder.
It steers the whole ship.
Sends your words past your lips
Or keeps them safe behind your teeth.
But the wrong words will strand you.
Come off course while you sleep.
Sweep your boat out to sea
Or dashed to bits on the reef.
The vessel groans
The ocean pressures its frame.
To the port I see the lighthouse
Through the sleet and the rain.
And I wish for one more day to give my
Love and repay debts.
But the morning finds our bodies washed up thirty miles west.
They say that the captain stays fast with the ship,
Through still and storm,
But this ain't the Dakota,
And the water's so cold,
{We} won't have to fight for long.
(This is the end.)
This story's old but it goes on and on until we disappear,
(This is the calm.)
Calm me and let me taste the salt you breathed while you were underneath,
(We are the risen.)
I am the one who haunts your dreams of mountains sunk below the sea,
(After the storm.)
I spoke the words but never gave a thought to what they all could mean,
(Rest in the sea.)
I know that this is what you want, a funeral keeps both of us apart.
(Washed up on the beach.)
You know that you are not alone, I need you like water in my lungs.

This song is clearly about a relationship that fails.
We sent out the S.O.S. call.
It was a quarter past four, in the morning
When the storm broke our second anchor line.
Four months at sea. Four months of calm seas {only}
To be pounded in the shallows off the tip of Montauk Point.
it was a four month relationship that he realized was really over early in the morning.
it's metaphors about boats used to described the desperation of wanting to save a relationship when there's no chance of survival.
there are hundreds of meanings behind this song, and i could probably list off a good 40 of them right now, but regardless of what we all think this means, its still an amazing song-the string of words and emotion Lacey puts into his lyrics are simply astounding, and i dont think i have (or ever will) heard another songwriter/vocalist who pulls this off as well as Lacey.
what to think? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/21/09
honestly i dont know how i feel when i go over the lyrics of this song. sometimes it just makes me wish i was a better songwriter. but most of the time it just makes me cry a little. either way just about every song by them has touched me in some way.
Personally, | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/11/09
Jesse Lacey is an ineffably talented writer; every single one of his songs are beyond the shallow depth of the lyrics themselves. He's gifted with the ability to string words together and create something that has multiple meanings but to HIMSELF there will be the one true meaning of the song.. If that makes any sense.
If Lacey wanted to write a song simply about his girlfriend cheating on him, or simply just to write a song, he'd sound like every other band.
His lyrics is what makes Brand New, Brand New. All of his songs that he wrote, along with Vinnie Accardi, is everything that has been said and more... and I think that that's what is so passionate and compelling about their writing and music.

This is one of the best songs that there is to hear. the whole song is a giant metaphor to the failing of a relationship, whether that relationship be romantic or friendship. The line "I need you like water in my lungs," is brilliant, seeing as water in your lungs will kill you. Translation- this relationship is killing him, and he knows he doesn't need whoever this person is, but he still stays with her.
Every album of Brand New is brilliant, but personally I like Deja Entendu and the Devil and God Are Raging Inside of Me the most. :)
Lacey Vs. Nolan | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/19/09
Jesse Lacey of Brand New and John Nolan, formally of Taking Back Sunday, knew each other and were friends since high school. At one point in their friendship, Lacey caught his girlfriend cheating on him with John Nolan. (You can see their insults through their songs with the lyrics matching up in Brand New's 'Seventy Time Seven' and Taking Back Sunday's 'There's No I in Team.') Because this conflict was close to the time many of the songs on this album were written, it is possible that the obstacle between Lacey and this mystery girl is his friend or possibly overcoming her cheating.
Good relationship gone bad | Reviewer: Erin | 2/1/09
I've noticed that a lot of people are saying that the lyrics are saying that Jesse Lacey loves a girl, but she doesn't love him back. I don't agree with that. I think that this was a relationship gone terribly wrong. At one point, the couple loved each other, but one of them did you said something (hence the lines Your tongue is a rudder. It steers the whole ship. Sends your words past your lips Or keeps them safe behind your teeth.) that made it so that they could not be together. When Lacey says "I need you like water in my lungs", it's obvious that he can't be with her. That's his way of saying that being with her is impossible.
This is what ive herd from alot of people. Its about a love thats been tried over and over, and keeps going wrong. And he wants her but it hurts because there is something in the way. And he will always care for her.
Personally, I love everything brand new writes. Like 'Your Favorite Weapon' is totally different then 'The Devil&God are Raging Inside Me'. And I love them both but its good they can be diverse. Jessy Lacey is a genius with a amazing voice.
Love | Reviewer: Brandnewww, | 12/29/08
I personally think this song is by far the best one i've heard, I think Jesse is trying to imply two meanings, love loss and friendship. the love loss would be referd to with the line 'You know that you are not alone, I need you like water in my lungs' water kills people when they have it in your lungs, so he wants to die basically because someone he loves has been murdered or something. When you truely listen to the song it shows true feelings towards whoever its dedicated to, No its not one of the songs by them that manage to bring tears to my eyes, but once i've listened to it, i start thinking, about how deep a meaning this song has,
Theres my imput.
