Pirate Looks At 40 Lyrics
Artist(Band):Jack Johnson
Mother, mother ocean, I have heard you call
Wanted to sail upon your waters since I was three feet tall
You've seen it all, you've seen it all
Watched the men who rode you switch from sails to steam
In your belly you hold the treasures few have ever seen
Most of 'em dreams, most of 'em dreams
Yes I am a pirate, a few two hundred years too late
The cannons don't thunder, there's nothin' to plunder
I'm an over-forty victim of fate
Arrivin' too late, arrivin' too late
I've done a bit of smugglin', I've run my share of grass
I made enough money to buy Miami, but I pissed it away so fast
Never meant to last, never meant to last
And I have been drunk now for over two weeks
I passed out and I rallied and I sprung a few leaks
But I got stop wishin', I've got to go fishin'
Down to rock bottom again
Just a few friends, just a few friends
Just a few friends, just a few friends
[Instrumental]
I go for younger women, lived with several awhile
Though I ran 'em away, they'd come back one day
Still could manage a smile
Sure takes a while, just takes a while
Mother, mother ocean, after all my years I've found
Occupational hazard being my occupations just not around
I feel like I've drowned, but I'm not gonna frown
I feel like I've drowned, gonna head into town

WOW! | Reviewer: chet | 9/24/2007I just logged on to get some lyrics and chords for this song...I now think you are all the biggest tools I have ever seen. Get over yourselves and go out and get some fresh air...lunchboxes.
Chill out, folks. | Reviewer: FrenchToast | 7/20/2007
Alright guys... chill the hell out.
First off, let's quit the Jack Johnson bashing. He's a great songwriter with a distinctive style, groove, and voice. Plus, it's not like he's ripping off Buffet, right before he starts playing he tells EVERYBODY that it's a Jimmy Buffet cover. He plays this song to pay tribute to Buffet.
Additionally, the only thing wrong with these lyrics is the inclusion of the last two verses. The Jack Johnson version has those omitted, so that's the only change.
Look, people cover other peoples songs. It's a form of flattery, not of hostility. Chill out.
i agree , i like jack johnson | Reviewer: andy | 4/25/2007
he is no jimmy and has no buisness having his name next to it. i have no problem with him singing it but dont list this as a jack johnson song. i am pouring a little of my land shark beer out for this tragedy. galvestontechsan
At least get it right! | Reviewer: JT | 4/21/2007
Look, Jimmy Buffett is a legendary songwriter, and deserves his props. That you'd be ignorant enough to presume that Jack Johnson could have written this masterpiece is bad enough, but ya didn't even have the lyrics right until I gave them the corrections. Jack Johnson himself does this song because it's a great tune, and as tribute to Jimmy Buffett... so honor the both of them and get it right.
As to getting over it, and songs being "in the wind"... that's an interesting perspective that you really need to get over. GOOD songs are relatively few, great songs rare... and singing surfers with a guitar a dime a dozen. :P (Sorry, Jack, but you know what I mean.) I'm NOT a Parrothead, (though I am a songwriter) and it pissed me off too. If you're gonna publish the guy's stuff, at least get it right... Or are you saying you wouldn't mind if they sent part of your paycheck and the credits for a job well done to some guy who just started at the company. Would you then be saying "It's okay, I'll get over it?"
Lighten up Dude! (above) | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/6/2007
Lighten up! Songs are in the wind. This one would be long forgotten by the next generation, but now a whole new group of people can enjoy it, and many of them will find out about Buffett.
He probably loves it!
Relax!
Jimmy Buffett's Song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/10/2006
i'm sorry, but as a parrothead... this just pisses me off. no one should ever sing this song but jimmy buffett. no one. this is my favorite song of all time, and to hear someone else take it as there own, and to have the next generation hear it is "jack johnson's song" really makes me sad.
