Pink Bullets Lyrics - The Shins

Review The Song (14)

I was just bony hands as cold as a winter pole
You held a warm stone out new flowing blood to hold
Oh what a contrast you were
To the brutes in the halls
My timid young fingers held a decent animal.

Over the ramparts you tossed
The scent of your skin and some foreign flowers
Tied to a brick
Sweet as a song
The years have seemed short but the days were long.

Cool of a temperate breeze from dark skies to wet grass
We fell in a field it seems now a thousand summers passed
When our kite lines first crossed
We tied them into knots
And to finally fly apart
We had to cut them off.

Since then it's been a book you read in reverse
So you understand less as the pages turn
Or a movie so crass
And awkwardly cast
That even I could be the star.

I don't look back much as a rule
And all this way before murder was cool
But your memory is here and I'd like it to stay
Warm light on a winter's day.

Over the ramparts you tossed
The scent of your skin and some foreign flowers
Tied to a brick
Sweet as a song
The years have seemed short but the days go slowly by
Two loose kites falling from the sky
Drawn to the ground and an end to flight.

the great divide | Reviewer: banjo | 9/27/13

This is a recurrng and deep theme in Shins songs. The ineffable divide between yin and yang, mars and venus, origination, perspective, interaction, separation. Like to know the gal that inspired this one.

Sometimes love ends | Reviewer: Mini | 9/21/12

To me it seems to me that a boy had love with a girl who was sweet and warm. Most things in life have an expiry date and his love for her did too. He did not want to settle down though somewhere he knew that in a harsh world of strangers she was the unique refreshing love of his life, who could have been his family in a real sense. Instead he kills the love and lets her go, to explore more though he already knows things will never be so good for him again. He doesn't look back in regret anymore but sometimes in the awkwardly cast glare of his new life he reserves the right to save a memory of the shade of her sweet love.

from a perspective of years | Reviewer: singout | 4/30/11

I just watched the video for this song and I think it's the perfect marriage with the lyrics and melody.I won't get those images or sounds out of my head anytime soon, that's for sure.Anyway,in my humble opinion, this song is about a relationship, how the writer feels about the object of his affections in the beginning-they seem unique because he himself feels that way.And it's about the demise of that relationship. When we say goodbye in our youth we ruthlessly cut all ties to that person so that we can stop the hurt, get on with our lives and forget.I think that's why some of the imagery the lyrics call up make us think the writer has murdered his former love.

Analyzation | Reviewer: Tom | 12/18/10

A character was cold and lonely, or maybe cold and emotionless, until a girl or boy, respectively, expressed some love for him/her. This "new decent animal" was different from all the rest and so the character loved him or her in return.
The character had walls in his or her mind that the lover penetrated. They were separated, however, and now, even though the character "doesn't look back, as a rule", he/she remembers good times they had together and memories of eachother.
There is something to suggest the lover is dead, possibly by the character's hand. "all this, way before murder was cool" and "to finally fly apart, we had to cut them off". The use of the word "we" instead of "I" had to cut them off (in context of bonds with eachother) hints that it was mutual, though.

i think | Reviewer: bella | 4/6/09

it's just about a memory he's got about great times with somebody he had to lose. just because they couldn't live together. they wanted to but it didn't work out. now he's losing this great times and that's not what he meant with going alone.

so ive always thought it was just a poetic love song but for the first time.......i think this might be about murder...just some of the lines, the kite thing and cutting them off(the only way he could let go was to kill her) tied to a brick tossing over ramparts.....it happened BEFORE murder was cool meaning he did it all on his own with influence. idk i might just be over thinking it completely but.....maybe

simply. astounding. | Reviewer: Ariel | 1/31/08

The shins are great without a doubt. They know how to find the right words, and say so little but explain so much. Emotion and poetry are definatly their element.
They are the kind of band who can intellectually use metephores and different plots other than the typical songs now a day mostly based on sex, drugs, violence, and "cry my heart out" lovey dovey stuff. And although, yes, don't get me wrong, they do make songs similar to it, but in a smarter more open and poetic way thats more pleasing to listen to.

A Special Song...Pink Bullets | Reviewer: Mark P | 1/16/08

Every so often I discover a song that brings emotions from within me that makes me come back over and over to re-live that certain feeling that I just cannot explain...Pink Bullets is one of those special songs.
The paper cows and those sad eyes are a perfect video compliment to portrait outward simplicity toward the deep and complex nature of love, and loss. Thank you "The Shins" for bringing this to me.

bittersweet | Reviewer: Angie | 9/2/07

Don't we all have one of these bittersweet relationship memories? The melody, his voice and the lyrics are the perfect storm of expressing that feeling of having loved someone to early to really understand how to nurture a relationship.

My Experience | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/8/07

I went to see the shins live at a music festival in Australia called splendour in the grass... though they didn't play this song, it parallels my experience before during and after...
i didn't know what i was missing...
it was the greatest thing i've ever experienced while it lasted...
and i don't know what to do with myself now it's over... all i've got is the memory

the parallelism is great. he fantastically brings all the motifs together in the end. lyrically great and musically advanced, really showcases the authors tone well.i love this song.

My opinion | Reviewer: cassie | 3/25/07

The shins use a ton of metaphors, which is whats so great about them. It showcases their talent in writing. Anywho, this one is clearly about a relationship that's no longer in existance but still has a huge impact on the lyracists thoughts. The first stanza suggests she was nothing he had ever dealt with, in a refreshing way, she set herself apart from any girl he'd ever known.
The kite reference is suggesting that in order to move on in life, they had to cut off all ties but doing it was for the best.
I won't say much more, because it's best to let it have your own meaning.

Question | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/3/07

What are they talking about? I have the same question for every one of there songs. Please respond. Thanks.
